Fort San Juan | NC Now | UNC-TV
This year marks the 450th anniversary of the founding of Fort San Juan, which occurred in January 1567. One month earlier, Spanish army captain, Juan Pardo and 125 men set out from La Florida on a mission to forge a route to the Spanish silver mines in northern Mexico. During this expedition he built six forts between the coast of South Carolina and western Tennessee. In the mid 1980’s archeologists began researching the expedition route, and in 2013, they discovered one of these Forts at a native town near Morganton, North Carolina.
San Juan Island Wasington English Camp Vs Americans In The Pig War
San Juan Island Washington Is A Lasting Reminder Of What Was Called The Pig War
The San Juan Islands were in dispute between the U.S. and Great Britain called the Pig War. In Earlier treaties it was decided the border between Vancouver Isand and the U.S. mainland would be the middle of the channel. The problem was that as it turned out, there were two navigable channels suitable for shipping traffic. If you believe the treaty was referring to the Eastern channel the San Juan Islands would belong to the British. If you choose to believe the treaty was referring to the other channel to the west the San Juans would belong to the United States.
There was an incident involving a wayward trespassing pig which led to the brink of military conflict.
For over 12 years San Juan Island was occupied by both American and British forces in two camps. English Camp near the north end of the island and American Camp on the south side of the island. During the joint occupation the troops were very friendly to each other, hosting competitions, gatherings, parties, and celebrating holidays together. It was said that large amounts of alcohol were consumed at these events and the soldiers stationed there had a great time.
When the dispute was settled the party was over and the San Juan Islands were American.

SUMMARY
=======
San Juan Island National Historical Park, also known as American and English Camps, San Juan Island, is a U.S. National Historical Park owned and operated by the National Park Service on San Juan Island in the state of Washington. The park is made up of the sites of the British and U.S. Army camps during the Pig War, a boundary dispute over the ownership of the island. Both of these camps were set up in 1859 as response to a border controversy triggered by the killing of a pig. The camps were occupied for 12 years, until the islands were awarded to the United States by Kaiser Wilhelm I in an arbitration agreed by the parties in the 1872 Treaty of Washington. The British abandoned their camp in November 1872, while the American camp was disbanded in July 1874. The camp sites were designated a National Historic Landmark in 1961, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966. The park was created by an Act of Congress in 1966.
