New Hong Kong protests as China moves armed vehicles to border | ITV News
Hongkongers have joined together for another round of protests, marking the start of the 11th weekend of demonstrations.
On Friday evening, thousands of people gathered in Chater Garden - a small park in Central - to make their voices heard.
But this protest differed from others in more recent days; state sanctioned and peaceful.
It comes as mainland China's state-backed media has ramped up its rhetoric about the former British colony.

Anti-government protesters flooded Chater Garden in the business district of Hong Kong on Friday, in the latest demonstration in the city. The rally was called 'Stand With Hong Kong, Power to the People.'
Footage shows protesters gathered around a stage from which speeches were held.
Protests have been taking place in Hong Kong since the end of March. Demonstrators are calling for the total withdrawal of a suspended bill that would allow the extradition of the city's residents to mainland China for trial. They also want Hong Kong's chief executive Carrie Lam to resign and the conduct of Hong Kong's police during the protests to be investigated, among other demands.

LIVE: Rally draws thousands of protesters to Hong Kong’s Chater Garden
Protesters gather in Hong Kong on Friday, August 16, to demonstrate against the government. The rally, s set to take place in Chater Garden, a park in the city centre.
The protest is one among many that have seen demonstrators gather since the end of March against a government proposed legislative amendment which could enable Hong Kong to consider extradition requests from countries where there is no prior agreement. The discontent then grew into a variety of grievances ranging from calls for greater democracy and against police brutality.

Student Strike at Charter Garden Central in Hong Kong
(30 Sep 2019) Dozens of students rallied on Monday in Hong Kong's Charter Garden Central ahead of China's National Day to spread the message five demands, not one less.
One student said that Chief Executive Carrie Lam responded to one demand by shelving a controversial extradition bill that sparked a summer of protests in the semi-autonomous region.
Student Curry Pang said Lam thought Hong Kong would accept it.
Other demands include calling for Lam to step down and direct elections for the city's leader.
Hong Kong authorities on Monday rejected an appeal for a major pro-democracy march on China's National Day holiday after two straight days of violent clashes between protesters and police raised fears of more showdowns that could embarrass Beijing.
On Saturday and Sunday, riot police repeatedly fired water cannons and volleys of tear gas after demonstrators hurled Molotov cocktails at officers, targeted the city's government office complex and set off street fires.
Many protesters are planning to go out on the street again Tuesday, wearing black as posters call for Oct. 1 to be marked as A Day of Grief.

Hong Kong protesters rally despite ban on march
홍콩 시위: 오늘 최대 규모 예정
Ten of thousands of protesters in Hong Kong gathered at a rally on Sunday,... despite strong warnings from Beijing and a ban on big demonstrations by the local police.
Marking the eleventh week of protests and unrest that began with a now-suspended extradition bill,... anti-government demonstrators are continuing to resist what they see as an erosion of one country, two systems,... under which Hong Kong had enjoyed a degree of autonomy from the Chinese government.
After a mostly peaceful protest on Saturday,... organizers at the pro-democracy Civil Human Rights Front held Sunday's protest at Victoria Park... after police banned the group from holding a march.

Hundreds protest against police brutality in HK
(11 Oct 2019) Hundreds of masked protesters gathered at Chater Garden in central Hong Kong on Friday to rally against police brutality and show their support for students who have been arrested during the ongoing anti-government demonstrations.
The protests were triggered by a now-abandoned government plan to allow criminal suspects to be extradited for trial in Communist Party-controlled courts in mainland China.
It has escalated into a broader battle over Beijing's efforts to curb the Western-style civil liberties and autonomy promised to the former British colony when it returned to China in 1997.
Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam on Tuesday warned the Chinese military could step in if an uprising for democratic reforms in the city worsens, but has reiterated the government still hopes to resolve the crisis on its own.
