The Old Portland Underground, better known locally as the Shanghai Tunnels, is a group of passages in Portland, Oregon, United States, mainly underneath the Old Town Chinatown neighborhood and connecting to the main business section. The tunnels connected the basements of many hotels and taverns to the waterfront of the Willamette River. They were originally built to move goods from the ships docked on the Willamette to the basement storage areas, allowing businesses to avoid streetcar and train traffic on the streets when delivering their goods.

China Unknown: Saving Chinatown
Boston has the third largest Chinatown in the United States, yet it’s only the country’s 23rd largest city. Its Chinatown is also the only surviving historic ethnic Chinese community in New England since Chinatowns in Providence, Rhode Island and Portland, Maine vanished in the 1950s. But like Providence’s and Portland’s Chinatowns, Boston’s Chinatown is being threatened by rising housing costs, redevelopment, and gentrification. Organizations like the Chinese Progressive Association are trying to save and preserve Boston’s Chinatown for generations to come.
Meanwhile, Boston ranks third in the United States in its number of foreign students attending the areas many prestigious colleges and universities, with Chinese students making up the biggest percentage. This has led to many thriving Chinese student organizations, like the Harvard-Radcliffe Chinese Students Association.

Hung Far Low- Restoring a Chinatown Treasure in Portland, Oregon
The iconic Hung Far Low sign returned to its historic place in Old Town/Chinatown at NW 4th Avenue and NW Couch Street. The sign was installed over a two-day period, and then gift-wrapped until its unveiling on September 2, 2010.
The sign was removed during the 2008-09 renovation of the Hung Far Low building, which now houses Ping Restaurant. Portland citizens rallied to restore the 2000-pound landmark, raising more than $8,600 through commemorative t-shirt sales, a website and special events. PDC closed the remaining gap with approximately $45,000 in grant funding. The total cost of the project -- which includes removal of the sign, design and restoration work, and its re-attachment to the building, is estimated at $77,461.
We couldn't be happier about the return of the Hung Far Low sign to our neighborhood, said PDC Executive Director Bruce Warner. PDC's Sign and Lighting Improvement Program enabled the restoration of an iconic Old Town/Chinatown treasure and demonstrates our strategic commitment to public amenities, historic preservation and a vibrant central city.
About the Project
The Hung Far Low Building was built in 1916 and 1917. The eponymous restaurant was established in 1928 and operated on the second floor until its move to SE 82nd Avenue in 2005. In 2008 building owner Joanne Hong leased part of the building to HFL Project LLC, and the tenants opened Ping Restaurant on the street level in 2009.
During roof replacement work in 2008, the deterioration of the sign's support structure became apparent, and the sign and support structure were removed from the building and stored at Security Signs. The HFL principals have been instrumental in driving the sign repair and re-installation, working with Mrs. Hong, the local Chinese community and Old Town/Chinatown businesses and neighbors, and collecting donations.
The sign's appearance changed over the years when it was repainted and when the restaurant moved out of the neighborhood. Until 2004 the pagoda and Hung Far Low lettering on the sign were outlined in neon, and there is interest in someday restoring the neon lighting to the sign.
Initially, Security Signs planned to re-skin the existing sign framework, but instead proposed a new aluminum structure to replace the extensively-corroded framework. The sign has been completely re-constructed and painted to match the original colors. KPFF Engineers designed the steel and cable support structure, which was fabricated and installed by R&H Construction. Security Signs will attach the new sign to the support structure. KPFF will make structural observations during installation, and coordinate the required inspections. Lights on the building façade will illuminate the sign.

The intro to our amazing two week USA - West Coast adventure (June 2016) - Shot using iPhone 6S, Canon 700D & DJI Phantom 3A
For this roadtrip, we started in San Francisco driving north up the beautiful Route 101, into Oregon, all the way up the Oregon coast and eventually turning east into Portland. At this point we continued east until the Dalles and then headed South through Bend, Crater Lake, Lake Tahoe and eventually ended up in the one and only - Yosemite National Park. A few days here then led us to heading west again to Big Sur, and then finally back up again to San Francisco.

The Skidmore Fountain is a historic fountain in Portland, Oregon, United States. Erected in 1888, the fountain was intended to provide refreshment for horses, men, and dogs, and it did that for many years. Today, however, the bronze and granite fountain is primarily decorative. It was dedicated September 22, 1888 in memory of Stephen G. Skidmore and partly financed by his will. Designed and built by sculptor Olin Warner for $18,000, all of which was donated. It is styled after fountains Skidmore viewed on his visit to the 1878 Paris Exposition and intended for horses, men and dogs to drink from Henry Weinhard offered to pump beer into the fountain at the dedication.The fountain is located near the west end of the Burnside Bridge at SW First and Pine streets within downtown Portland. The MAX Light Rail line runs past it and has a nearby stop named after the fountain.
Every Saturday and Sunday from March through Christmas Eve the Old Town/Chinatown neighborhood transforms into a thriving arts and crafts open-air marketplace. Seeing the Market’s staff delegate booth spaces with precision each weekend for so many years, most of the neighborhood has come to think of Portland Saturday Market (PSM) as a business like any other. But it certainly was not always that way, and some surprising elements still lie at the core of this unusual non-profit operation.
Portland Saturday Market was the brainchild of two women, Sheri Teasdale and Andrea Scharf. Both were artists living in the area who had sold at the Saturday Market in Eugene; their idea was to create a similar style of market in downtown Portland. Beginning in December 1973, the two visited everyone they could think of in the city to sell their idea: an open-air market of all handmade food and craft items. It would be a win-win situation they insisted. Artists would have an economic outlet for their work, customers would gain better access to locally produced items, and the city would have a new attraction to draw customers into the downtown area.

With an estimated 744,955 residents as of 2018, Seattle is the largest city in both the state of Washington and the Pacific Northwest region of North America. According to U.S. Census data released in 2018, the Seattle metropolitan area's population stands at 3.94 million, and ranks as the 15th largest in the United States. Internet retailer Amazon was founded in Seattle in 1994, and major airline Alaska Airlines is based in SeaTac, Washington, serving Seattle's international airport, Seattle–Tacoma International Airport. The stream of new software, biotechnology, and Internet companies led to an economic revival, which increased the city's population by almost 50,000 between 1990 and 2000. In recent decades, however, use of the catch-all downtown adjective to describe neighborhoods downriver from Canal Street has largely ceased, having been replaced in usage by individual neighborhood names (such as Bywater).
Originally developed as the largely-residential Faubourg Ste. Marie (English: St. Mary Suburb) in the late 18th century, the modern Central Business District is today a dynamic, mixed-use neighborhood, the home of professional offices in skyscrapers, specialty and neighborhood retail stores, numerous restaurants and clubs, and thousands of residents inhabiting restored, historic commercial and industrial buildings.
