Christians in Hong Kong have become a major force in the protests against the extradition bill that would allow authorities in Hong Kong to send people to Mainland China for trial. Whether its the presence of church groups or leading rounds of the hym “Sing Hallelujah to the Lord,” Christians have left their mark on the protests. I sit down with Cardinal Joseph Zen, the former Bishop of Hong Kong to talk about the role of Christians and Catholics in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong’s Christian protesters come armed with hymns
Christians are playing an important role in Hong Kong’s ongoing protests, which aim to preserve the city’s freedoms and autonomy.
While the Chinese government has been accused of cracking down on religious freedom in the mainland, religious groups in the former British colony of Hong Kong are flourishing.
During the campaign against a now-dead extradition bill, Christians were among those taking to the streets.
Churches have become temporary support centers. The hymn ‘Sing Hallelujah to the Lord’ has become the unofficial protest anthem for Christians and non-Christians.
As clashes erupted between protesters and police over the weekend, some Christians tried to reduce tensions between the two sides by standing between them.
We talked to Christians during the most recent major protest. Watch our video to find out more.

The Double Ninth Festival (Chong Yang Festival or Chung Yeung Festival in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, Chōyō (重陽), observed on the ninth day of the ninth month in the Chinese calendar, is a traditional Chinese holiday, mentioned in writing since before the Eastern Han period (before AD 25).
On this holiday folks visit the graves of their ancestors to pay their respects. In Hong Kong, extended families head to ancestral graves to clean and repaint inscriptions, and to lay out food offerings such as roast pig and fruit, which are then eaten (after the spirits have consumed the spiritual element of the food). Incense and flowers are also offered. When cemeteries get crowded, grass fires are inadvertently started by the burning incense sticks.
Fearing Crackdown, Christians at Forefront of Hong Kong Protests
As Hong Kong's pro-democracy protesters vow to keep up their fight, churches remain on the front lines. Christian groups hold regular public gatherings and sing hymns at demonstrations, both as a way to protest and to de-escalate clashes between police and more aggressive protesters. As VOA's Bill Gallo reports, many churches in Hong Kong fear a crackdown on religion as China expands its influence.

Greater China Christian Conference 2013 ~ Summary
When the LORD brought back the captives to Zion, we were like men who dreamed.
Our mouths were filled with laugher, our tongues with songs of joy.
Then, it was said among the nations,
The LORD has done great things for them.(Psalms 126:1-2)
We had just had the Hong Kong Church of Christ 25th Anniversary Conference, In the Beginning. As the title of the Conference aptly states, about 20 disciples from Boston, London, and Hong Kong started the Hong Kong Church of Christ in 1987. Under Scott and Lynne Green's leadership, the Church grew from a handful to close to 2,000 disciples in the first 10 years, as well as planted the Churches in Taipei and China. The second 10 years was challenged by the tumultuous changes of the leadership in our Churches around the world. Philip and Pandora Lam faithfully and courageously kept the Hong Kong Church together through this challenging period. Despite these challenges, the Lord has built His Kingdom continually in the Greater China. We currently have close to 1,000 disciples meeting in China, 600 disciples in Taiwan, and 1,900 disciples in Hong Kong. While we are grateful for these souls saved, we are reminded that there are millions more we must reach out to.
This Conference is to celebrate what the Lord has done in the past 25 years, we also want to recognize the past and present staff and lay leaders who have sacrificed for this dream to come true, as well as to affirm our continued goal to take the message of salvation through Jesus to all parts of the Greater China. Together we will build His Church as City on a Hill in our generation!

Chinese police have detained a prominent pastor and more than 100 worshippers in a crackdown on “illegal” religious assemblies. Coordinated raids were carried out in Chengdu the evening of December 9 as the Early Rain Covenant Church gathered for service. Among those held was prominent church leader Wang Yi, who had met US president George W. Bush at the White House in 2006. Tens of millions of Chinese Christians worship at independent, unregistered churches like Early Rain.

Pro-China mob surrounds Vancouver church, police called to escort worshippers
A mob of Chinese goverment supporters surrounded a Christian church in Vancouver where supporters of Hong Kong's democracy movement held a prayer meeting after an Aug. 18 protest near the Chinese consulate. Vancouver Police guarded the doors and escorted the worshippers out the back door while they were photographed by the Chinese government supporters.

One in every three Christians in Asia are suffering from a “high level” of persecution according to a new report by the UK-based Christian advocacy group Open Doors. Its 2019 Watch List Report ranks North Korea, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India among the top 10 where persecution of Christians is “most extreme”. China is on the list at number 27. Some church leaders in China say persecution is at its worst level since the Cultural Revolution in the 1960s and 70s. The South China Morning Post speaks to Ron Boyd-Macmillian, director of resarch at Open Doors International.
