Clear Creek Distillery Apple Brandy Review - On the Rocks
Jorel Hughes and Anthony Schultz review their second On the Rocks brandy, Clear Creek Distillery Apple Brandy.
Clear Creek Distillery is a fairly 'new' distillery based out of Portland, Oregon with humble beginnings in the 1986 orchard industry. Oregon is known for being abundant in various fruit crops, so founder Stephen McCarthy decided to open his own doors and put his orchards to good use in a brandy distillery!
The most famous product (and first!) was their eau de vie, which is a clear fruit brandy. However, since then they have branched out to several other types and fruit flavored brandies, such as the aforementioned Apple Brandy.
Unique for its time, Clear Creek Distillery is known as one of the finest eau de vie distilleries in the world and continues to receive high marks within the international community.
As a first for the On the Rocks team, Jorel and Anthony dive headlong into the nuanced flavorings of their Portland neighbor's finest brandy.
Don't forget to subscribe to the On the Rocks channel for continued reviews and critiques of your favorite spirits and cocktails!

The Future of the Columbia River Gorge
Presented on July 25, 1997
Laurie Aunan, executive director, Friends of the Columbia Gorge; Steve McCarthy, member, Columbia River Gorge Commission, and proprietor, Clear Creek Distillery
This summer thousands will visit the Columbia River Gorge. Some will hike or windsurf, others will tour places like Multnomah Falls. But few will realize that the very future of this scenic gorge is in danger.
At the heart of the controversy is the role of the Columbia River Gorge Commission, which receives bistate funding from Oregon and Washington. This year both state legislatures voted to slash the Commission's budget.
Steve McCarthy, proprietor, Clear Creek Distillery and Governor's appointee to the Commission, knows these cuts will cripple the Commission badly. And Lauri Aunan, executive director, Friends of the Columbia Gorge, thinks that returning lands to local control, will trigger a barrage of land use battles.
Join McCarthy and Aunan for an in-depth look at these threats to the Gorge. While McCarthy explores how budget cuts will affect the operations of the Commission, Aunan will reflect on the history of the Gorge, including its designation as a National Scenic Area, and review the priorities for protecting this remarkable land.

The Sinking of the Columbia
Since the advent of steam-powered vessels, riverboats were a popular form of excursion. While somewhat dangerous at first (boiler explosions and general safety issues), riverboats had become a fairly safe way to travel by the early 1900's. One such popular vessel, was the Steamer Columbia, which sailed out of the port of Peoria, Illinois. On what was supposed to be a routine Moonlight Excursion to Alfresco Park, a popular amusement destination along the Illinois river in Peoria, something went terribly wrong. On the return voyage to Pekin, Illinois, the Columbia ran into a dense fog covering the river. With pressures to have everyone home by midnight, the pilot pressed on through the murk. With no visual landmarks, two 90-degree bends in the river, and a sand bar, the boat ran aground on the Peoria County side of the river, across from Wesley City (now present day Creve Coeur). Fearing the worst, Captain Herman Mehl ordered the hull to be checked for water. The engineer and the first mate discovered the hull was flooded. Whether it a submerged stump or other debris, a decision had to be made. The captain ordered the pilot, Tom Williams to Run her ashore! As the river was not that deep, the pilot figured he had enough time to move the vessel to the other shore, where there would be help available from the small mining and fishing village. They could never have predicted what happened next.

SUMMARY
=======
Portland is the largest city in the U.S. state of Oregon and the seat of Multnomah County. It is a major port in the Willamette Valley region of the Pacific Northwest, at the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia rivers. As of 2017, Portland had an estimated population of 647,805, making it the 26th-largest city in the United States, and the second-most populous in the Pacific Northwest (after Seattle). Approximately 2.4 million people live in the Portland metropolitan statistical area (MSA), making it the 25th most populous MSA in the United States. Its Combined Statistical Area (CSA) ranks 18th-largest with a population of around 3.2 million. Approximately 60% of Oregon's population resides within the Portland metropolitan area.Named after Portland, Maine, the Oregon settlement began to be populated in the 1830s near the end of the Oregon Trail. Its water access provided convenient transportation of goods, and the timber industry was a major force in the city's early economy. At the turn of the 20th century, the city had a reputation as one of the most dangerous port cities in the world, a hub for organized crime and racketeering. After the city's economy experienced an industrial boom during World War II, its hard-edged reputation began to dissipate. Beginning in the 1960s, Portland became noted for its growing progressive political values, earning it a reputation as a bastion of counterculture.The city operates with a commission-based government guided by a mayor and four commissioners as well as Metro, the only directly elected metropolitan planning organization in the United States. The city government is notable for its land-use planning and investment in public transportation. Portland is frequently recognized as one of the world's most environmentally conscious cities because of its high walkability, large community of bicyclists, farm-to-table dining, expansive network of public transportation options, and over 10,000 acres (4,000 hectares) of public parks. Its climate is marked by warm, dry summers and cool, rainy winters. This climate is ideal for growing roses, and Portland has been called the City of Roses for over a century.

SUMMARY
=======
The Dormant Commerce Clause, or Negative Commerce Clause, in American constitutional law, is a legal doctrine that courts in the United States have inferred from the Commerce Clause in Article I of the US Constitution. The Dormant Commerce Clause is used to prohibit state legislation that discriminates against interstate or international commerce.
For example, it is lawful for Michigan to require food labels that specifically identify certain animal parts, if they are present in the product, because the state law applies to food produced in Michigan as well as food imported from other states and foreign countries; the state law would violate the Commerce Clause if it applied only to imported food or if it was otherwise found to favor domestic over imported products. Likewise, California law requires milk sold to contain a certain percentage of milk solids that federal law does not require, which is allowed under the Dormant Commerce Clause doctrine because California's stricter requirements apply equally to California-produced milk and imported milk and so does not discriminate against or inappropriately burden interstate commerce.
