Another massive anti-government march filled streets in Mong Kok on August 3, 2019, drawing about 120,000 people, according to organisers.
Some protesters briefly shut down the Cross-Harbour Tunnel, one of three such critical traffic arteries between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon.
The tunnel shut down at around 7pm after demonstrators blocked all lanes on the Kowloon side with barricades, causing serious traffic congestion on both sides of the harbour.

Alleged Hong Kong protesters vandalize toll station at Cross-Harbour Tunnel
A small group of what appeared to be protesters on Sunday vandalised a toll station at the Cross-Harbour Tunnel in Kowloon in Hong Kong.
Night footage showed protesters in black clothing smashing traffic lights and CCTV equipment at the toll booth. They also destroyed electronic payment devices, allowing cars to pass without stopping.
One toll worker was seen sitting inside a booth that was targeted. It was not immediately clear who they were or what their motive was.
However, they were wearing black, goggles, gas masks and helmets - similar to outfits worn by pro-democracy protesters during recent protests in Hong Kong.
The Cross-Harbour Tunnel connects Kowloon to Hong Kong Island's Victoria Harbour, and is normally heavily trafficked.

Hong Kong Then and Now: Split screen tour shows the pace of Hong Kong’s transformation over 45 years

Forty-five years ago, Hong Kong was in the midst of an economic boom. The first cross-harbour tunnel just opened to traffic, making the commute between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon much easier. The 52-storey, then newly-built Jardine House in Central became the tallest building in Hong Kong, transforming the city’s skyline. But the evolution did not stop there. Over the past four decades, Hong Kong has never failed to intrigue visitors from around the world with its new infrastructure and skyscrapers. The South China Morning Post takes a look at Hong Kong’s rapid development through a split-screen tour of the same streets in 1973 and 2018.

Hong Kong cross-harbour tunnel re-opens
(26 Nov 2019) Hong Kong's Cross-Harbour Tunnel reopened in the early hours of Wednesday morning, having been closed after protesters had set fire to the toll booths.
The development comes as one of the more violent chapters in the city’s long-running anti-government protests may be coming to a close with a week-long police siege of a university winding down.
The streets around Polytechnic were the scenes of fierce clashes with police 10 days ago.
Protesters used the campus as a base and shut down access to the major roadway under Hong Kong's harbour.
Protests initially started in opposition to an extradition bill that protesters saw as an erosion of their rights promised when the former British colony returned to Chinese control in 1997.
The demonstrations have since expanded into a protest over what they see as Beijing’s growing interference in the city.
