BREAKFAST IN THE FRAGRANT HARBOUR | Traveling to Hong Kong for Mountain Biking
Hong Kong is less than 4 hours away from Singapore by plane for anyone who wants to mix it up in terms of shopping, dining, sightseeing, and mountain bike riding. With our minds on trails - and also on the much sought-after HK cuisine - we 5 riders geared up for a long weekend of trail adventures and caught an evening flight to the 'Fragrant Harbour'...
*We visited under the invitation of HM Lim, a fellow Singaporean and purveyor of fine trails who is currently overseeing trail-building in the Hong Kong SAR. Our thanks goes out to HM as well as Nick Alexander from Cross Country HK for their guidance during our riding there.

THE FORGOTTEN SHREDIT | Mountain Biking the Landslide Trail, Hong Kong
Better late than never^, we hit the Landslide Trail, a tech-filled descent in the shadow of Tai Mo Shan. Would our Singaporean crew survive the gnar... to catch our flight back to Singapore that same evening?

-- [^Message from the creator: It's been a tough few months behind-the-scenes and in my personal life for me recently, and one of the first things that went out the window was a steady video upload schedule.
I'm glad to say that I'm making my way back to what I love (making videos) gradually, and one of the best bunch of clips I had yet to make into a watchable edit (till now) were those from our last day of riding in Hong Kong back in December. Hope you enjoy!] --

ENTER THE TIN MAN | Mountain Biking Tai Lam, Hong Kong
Continuing on from Tai Mo Shan, we rally the Tin Man descent, a trail project headed by HM and the Hong Kong Mountain Bike Association (HKMBA) work parties. Even as the day grows shorter, the stoke levels remain high as we drop further down to Tai Lam Reservoir for the ride back to Gold Coast (where we grab the first of our two dinners!).

“My first reaction was: it’s so beautiful”, says Li. This is why more and more Hongkongers are jumping into paragliding as they search for freedom amid the concrete jungle and crowds. Some paragliders are worried Hong Kong’s focus on development will push the sport out of the city.

HONG KONG: LAST HONG KONG TO BEIJING MOTOR RALLY STARTS
English/Nat
The last ever Hong Kong to Beijing motor rally is officially underway.
Seventy teams are taking part in the race, which ends next Friday in the Chinese capital.
With fitting pomp and ceremony, motor racing teams and fans gathered on Saturday for the start of the 555 Hong Kong to Beijing rally.
Seventy teams are taking part in the race, the sixth and last time it will be run.
Calling itself the Ultimate Challenge, the rally will test drivers and crews over seven legs featuring 24 stages.
Last year's champion, Kenneth Ericksson, says he expects tough competition from this year's field.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
I'm very confident but I also know that it's going to a hard fight between the Subaru Impreza and the Mitsubishi Team all through this year. The most important thing for me now is to get this blue and yellow Impreza 55 leading the convoy into Beijing, then I'll be very happy. If it's me, fantastic, or my teammate Pierre, I don't care too much. But the most important thing is this team is winning this moment.
SUPER CAPTION: Kenneth Eriksson, Defending Champion
The field is full of possible new champions, including Team Ericsson.
In a sport traditionally dominated by men, this team features a rarity, a female crew member.
Navigating for Team Ericsson, Tang Po Lin knows that much depends on her skills.
SOUNDBITE: (Cantonese)
The most important thing is to stay calm, no matter what is happening . Any emergency, I have to stay calm, or else I'll make more mistakes.
SUPER CAPTION: Tang Po Lin, Navigator, Team Ericsson
For this and the past five years, the race has been the final round of the Asia-Pacific car rally championship.
But a new format starting next year will require only three days of racing on a circuit around Beijing.
For these drivers, it will be a last chance to test their skills over seven days on this unique cross-country course.

Hong Kong Booksellers Lam Wing-Kee Describes Detention Review
Hong Kong bookseller disappearances spark widespread anger and alarm
Beijing: One of the five Hong Kong booksellers who went missing late last year has provided an explosive account of his detention and mistreatment by Chinese authorities in the case widely regarded as the most serious violation of Hong Kong's autonomy by Beijing since its handover from British rule.
In a gripping press conference on Thursday, two days after his return to the city, Lam Wing-kee described an ordeal which included being accosted by 11 people after he crossed the mainland border into the southern city of Shenzhen in October, being blindfolded on a cross-country train ride to coastal Ningbo, and coming under sustained interrogation while being held incommunicado in a small room for months.
I was handcuffed and my eyes were covered, Mr Lam said of the train ride. It took about 13 or 14 hours. I noticed I was taken to Ningbo because I glimpsed the station when we got off the train.
For 24 hours [a day], six groups of people took turns watching me. I was allowed no outside communication, no lawyer.
Visibly shaken and fatigued, Mr Lam said he had only been released by his mainland captors after he promised to return from Hong Kong by Thursday with a database of customers who had bought titles from his store, Causeway Bay Books, which specialised in scandalous, gossipy tomes often highly critical of China's Communist Party leadership.
This isn't about me, this isn't about a bookstore, this is about everyone, he said. This is Hongkongers' bottom line – Hongkongers will not bow down before brute force.
Mr Lam and his four Causeway Bay Books colleagues Gui Minhai, Lee Bo, Lui Por and Cheung Chi-ping disappeared in the space of weeks only to subsequently surface in mainland detention. Their case has attracted condemnation from international rights groups and foreign governments including Australia, while providing a rallying point for pro-democracy activists in a city already acutely worried of creeping mainland influence.
Mr Lam resurfaced briefly in February in a televised confession on Phoenix TV. On Thursday, he said the recording was made under duress and that there was a director and a script he was made to follow. He was also made to sign an admission of guilt, including an admission of sending restricted books into the mainland.
If I broke Chinese laws they can sue me, why did the Chinese government grab me silently when I crossed the border? he said.
This is not just my personal matter or Causeway Bay Books, this is about the human rights of Hong Kong people, he said, adding his detention was a clear violation of the 'one country two systems' constitutional framework meant to preserve Hong Kong's autonomy under Chinese sovereignty.
Like Mr Lam, Gui Minhai and Lee Bo have also appeared in recorded confessions offering contrite apologies and admissions of guilt on mainland television.
Mr Lee, a dual-British national and publisher at Causeway Bay Books, had said he travelled to China of his own accord despite police having no record of him crossing the border, raising concerns that mainland officers were operating in the city without permission. Lee, as well as Cheung and Lui, had denied being abducted and asked Hong Kong police to drop their missing persons cases.
Obviously, it was exactly the same situation in which I was forced to make a televised confession, Mr Lam said.
Gui Minhai, a Swedish national, remains in Chinese detention after vanishing from his holiday home in the Thai resort town of Pattaya in October. He too was shown in a televised recording asking the Swedish government not to interfere.
Hong Kong human trafficking: Filipino helpers being lured to Russia
Filipino domestic helpers Nhie and Dang (not their real names) were victims of human trafficking in Hong Kong. They were lured to Russia after being promised lucrative jobs there by a Hong Kong agency. But the agency couldn't find them jobs and still charged them high fees.
Matt Friedman, the chief executive officer of the Mekong Club, an anti-slavery group in Hong Kong, said he had come across victims of trafficking ending up in prostitution or exploited positions.
