A Self-Guided Bicycle Tour of Portland
First of all, you're gonna need a bike. We recommend Cycle Portland for this--they're right downtown and easily accessible. They're also great if you want to book an actual tour where they'll guide you around and tell you about the city, but we prefer to chart our own course (more time for eating), so we grabbed a pair of bikes and hit the streets.
Next, plot your course. Actually, you should probably do this before renting your bike so you know which bike to rent. Most of downtown Portland is fairly flat and accessible, but if you want to go farther afield or to Washinton Park, the sprawling green space in the city, you may want an E-bike. We made this mistake. We're in pretty good shape, but the ride to and through the park is aaaaaaall uphill, and it is an exhausting slog. You've been warned.

81 Mi. Portland to Larch Mt. out and back bicycle route preview
This is a bicycle route preview for a club ride. This is an 81 mile out and back route from the Woodlawn Neighborhood in Northeast Portland to the top of Larch Mt. and back. The first 17 miles of the route to Troutdale is primarily on Marine Drive and its associated bicycle trails. Just east of Troutdale we cross the Sandy River and proceed to the Portland Women's Forum Lookout on E. Historic Columbia River Rd. Just east of the lookout we begin the 14 mile climb to the top of Larch Mt.
The 20 mile climb from Troutdale to the top of Larch Mt. consists of three distinct sections. The first 6 miles from the Stark St. Bridge on the E. Historic Columbia Hwy. gains about 860 ft. with modest 3-5% ramps interspersed with flats or 1-3% false flats. The next 9 miles begins at the start of E. Larch Mt. Rd. Here you'll gain about 1600 ft. over 9 miles with long ramps up to 7% and modest 2-4% slogs in between. There are even a few downhill sections. The last and most difficult section is the final 5.5 miles of the climb beginning at the Mt. Hood National Forest boundary. Here there are ramps between 7-15% with very little respite in between.
PLEASE NOTE: The majority of this ride is on roads that include automobile traffic and commercial truck traffic, including logging trucks. Additionally, the climb up Larch Mt. is very strenuous and the mountain is subject to quick and unpredictable weather changes. The descent down Larch Mt. is can be high speed and technical and is subject to traffic, road hazards including pot holes, and items falling off log and other trucks.
Please note: The video may contain routing errors and the entire route is not shown on the video. It is not intended to be used in place of a map and proper planning. This video does not purport to identify all hazards or dangerous conditions on the route. Further, route conditions are changeable and will be affected may factors such as weather, traffic and construction. Always ride within your abilities, your confidence and the course conditions. Cycling is an inherently dangerous activity, especially when riding in traffic and on hills. Always wear a helmet and make sure your bicycle is in good mechanical condition.
