HIKING TO DARK HOLLOW FALLS IN SHENANDOAH NATIONAL PARK, VIRGINIA
I'm taking a break from baseball videos today to vlog about our hiking trip to Dark Hollow Falls.
I thought about hitting some baseballs off of the mountain tops, but didn't want to litter in a National Park, since I wouldn't have been able to retrieve the baseballs.
Thanks for watching!
4 Essential Stops in SHENANDOAH NATIONAL PARK [4K]
in this video, I talk about my 4 favorite things to do in Shenandoah National Park, VA. This beautiful national park lies in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia, about 75 miles west of Washington DC. The park is over a hundred miles long and as you could imagine, there are countless activities to do within this park.
This video was taken in the end of April, so you can really see which trees have leaves and which do not. As we hiked or drove down from Skyline drive, even just 900 feet would be enough to completely transform.
Additional Notes:
SHENANDOAH NATIONAL PARK
General:
One of the few national parks on the east coast
Established in 1935
Home to the famous SKYLINE DRIVE which is 105 miles long
Virginial mountains, part of the Blue Ridge Mountains (part of the Appalachian mountain range), just 75 mi outside of Washington DC,
Land acquired through eminent domain. There is a long story there including claims of embellished claims local inbreeding
Parts of the park was used to train troops for WW2
5 campgrounds (some are first come first serve, and others allow reservations when in season)
3 lodges/cabins
9 major waterfalls to hike in and see – tallest one is 91 ft, but there are countless smaller ones along every creek
ROSE RIVER FALLS TRAIL / DARK HOLLOW FALLS:
Start at mile 49.4
Moderate difficulty, 4 mi, 910 ft elevation change
Hike clockwise to go down the rocky side (relatively easy) and then up the gradual fire road
You will also see Dark Hollow falls at the bottom and you can optionally add a quarter mile to hike up that waterfall
Cemetery on the way back
SKYLINE DRIVE
105 miles long, spanning the entire park
More than 75 overlook
Countless overlooks and pull offs to get the best view on the east or west side.
I recommend stopping at these all day to see amazing views, at sunrise, at sunset, and pull over to take a look at the stars at night
HAWKSBILL SUMMIT – start on Skyline drive pull off mile 45.5
1.7 mi round trip – which means you go up 520 ft
Very rapid ascent
Birds nest 2 – you can see Old Rag Mountain on your right
OLD RAG MOUNTAIN
You need to drive out of the park to get here
This does still require the park entrance fee, so be sure to stop and pay, or show them your pass
7.5 hrs (we did it in 6)
2380 ft elevation gain
Very strenuous – includes rock scrambling
9.2 mile circuit
Birds Nest 1 resides here – and you can see Hawksbill from the summit

Dark Hollow Falls on Skyline Drive, Virginia
One of quite a few videos that I took of the Dark Hollow Falls that are located .8 miles off of the main stretch of Skyline Drive. It was a bit of a hike to get to it, but I think it was worth it.
Dark Hollow Falls (Upper)
Dark Hollow Falls, Shenandoah National Park, Virginia. The stream that runs parallel with the hiking trail is Hogcamp Branch, which drains Big Meadows Swamp and becomes the principal tributary of Rose River.
There's a fantastic view of the falls from the bottom. The water drops 70 feet, in a series of cascades, over the crumbling greenstone of an ancient lava flow. Thomas Jefferson once stood here and admired the falls. Jefferson spent a great deal of time exploring these mountains, and studying their plants and animals. He was so fond of the Blue Ridge that at Monticello he put the outbuildings below ground, so as not to interfere with his view of the mountains.
The last segment in this clip was taken from the head of the falls at the top, with a slight pan downwards.

Still pics and HD video of an 8.5 mile hike from the Front Royal entrance up to the Visitor Center along the Dickey Ridge Trail. No overlooks along the trail but you have a nice view to the west up at the Visitor Center.
VLOG // Shenandoah National Park (Oct. 2018)
Hello!
During Fall Break, I took a road trip to Virginia to hike Shenandoah National Park with Rikki, Christina, and Shufen. It was the most surreal experience, I enjoyed every single moment of it, even the long 6-hour drive. The repetition and layers of mountains and valleys gave me so much peace. Despite being tired, I felt rejuvenated. This trip reminded me that there's just so much of our world to explore and I'm so grateful I got to get a glimpse of it again with friends.
Until next time, take care.
Jenny

Shenandoah National Park encompasses a massive 200,000 acres of protected land in the US state of Virginia. It is a very long thin park and includes part of the Blue Ridge Mountains, including Hawksbill Mountain, the highest peak in the park. These mountains are relatively short compared to their Western cousins with Hawksbill topping out at 4,050 feet (1,230 M). Known for its scenic Skyline Drive and epic fall colors Shenandoah is a haven from the hustle and bustle of the thriving cities of the East United States. It is located only 75 miles for the Nation's Capital City Washington DC. Shenandoah was not an easy park to create, and suffered with a long and conflicted inception. It is hard to argue today though that it wasn't a great idea. With it's wooded hollows, cascading waterfalls, and thriving wildlife, Shenandoah is a national treasure.
Shenandoah has over 500 miles of hiking trails in the park including over 100 miles of the famous Appalachian trail. The park's hikes are divided into 3 areas, the North District, the Central District, and the Southern District and range from easy day hikes to long back country excursions. Whatever your pace. Shenandoah has a hike for you.

Lower Whiteoak Canyon Falls in Shenandoah National Park
This is a beautiful waterfall I hiked to in Shenandoah National Park. This is the White Oak Canyon Trail and it leads you by the lower part of the falls here. It is really fun to swim in! Here is a view of my hike there -
Shenandoah National Park
Recorded on June 6, 2003. Shenandoah National Park encompasses part of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the state of Virginia. This national park is long and narrow, with the broad Shenandoah River and valley on the west side, and the rolling hills of the Virginia Piedmont on the east. The park is best known for Skyline Drive, a 105 mile road that runs the entire length of the park along the ridge of the mountains. The drive is particularly popular in the fall when the leaves are changing colors. During my visit to the park I visit many of the scenic overlooks. I also take a hike to Dark Hollow Falls. The video ends with some deer in the park.

Lewis Falls in Shenandoah National Park
I hiked this trail down a mountain in Shenandoah National Park. It lead me to one of the most beautiful waterfalls I have got to see! There was a heavy fog and was hard to see but made for a great scene once arriving at the falls as you can see. Here is a good site for more information - This is a link to my hike -
