Me and the hubby went and explored Skyline Drive Shenandoah National Park . It was absolutely Beautiful and Magical. We also came across a gorgeous little cemetery hidden in the woods.
Enter the park on Skyline Drive and begin to wind your way through the park’s 200,000 acres. Skyline Drive offers magnificent views along the crest of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains.
To truly experience the park’s natural beauty, step into the forest by way of one of the park’s 500 miles of trails. The famous Appalachian Trail runs for 101 miles through the park. Other trails lead to peaks with amazing views, some to cascading waterfalls.
Many types of wildlife call Shenandoah home, including black bear, white-tailed deer, bobcat and more than 200 resident and transient bird species.
Ranger educational programs are available from spring through fall and include easy walks, challenging hikes and traditional campfire talks designed to inspire and open your eyes to the wonder and beauty of the park.
Begin your experience with a stop at the Dickey Ridge (mile 4.6) or Byrd Visitor Centers (mile 51) where ready to help plan your visit and rangers can answer your questions and help you plan your visit.

Mary S.'s Review on The Dyrt:
▶︎ Well-maintained, quiet campground in a national park
What do I love about Mathews Arm Campground in Shenandoah National Park? So many things!
The simplicity of a national park setting: no frills in a beautiful setting.
Generator-free area: No generators are allowed in parts of the A and B sections.
Non-reservable sites! This makes it easier to travel without a plan other than arriving early at a campground. The entire A section (A1-A116) and a small part of C (C143-C145) cannot be reserved. Sites in B (B117-B141), the rest of C (C146-C164), and D (group sites D165-D167) can be reserved.
$15 price: Our Lifetime Senior Pass cuts that in half (and covers the park admission fee).
Hiking! You can hike to Overall Run Falls from a trail in the parking lot near the campground and turn this into a loop hike by returning a different way. The ranger at the Dickey Ridge Visitor Center near the Front Royal (North) Entrance Station was extremely helpful. We told her we planned to try 3 of the 4 campgrounds as we drove north to south on Skyline Drive and wanted hiking recommendations. There are 15 separate maps with multiple hikes in each, and we left with several of those marked up by the ranger. We also hiked the Stony Man loop on the way to our next stop at Big Meadows; the 180+ degree view while standing up on top of the rocks was spectacular.
It's quiet! People don't come to national park campgrounds to party. They come to see the sights and hike. They're tired at night and don't make a lot of noise.
I guess that's enough.
The Sites
Sites are large but many are lined up right next to each other. I recommend staying away from A72 to the end of A. They're lined up too closely for my taste, and there isn't much shade.
I liked our site A55 and thought A56-A61 were nice sites. When we entered a sparsely populated park in mid-afternoon on a Monday in October, those sites were already taken. By evening, the park was half full. Arrive early in the day if you don't have a reservation, especially later in the week.

SUMMARY
=======
Shenandoah National Park (often ) is a national park that encompasses part of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the U.S. state of Virginia. The park is long and narrow, with the broad Shenandoah River and Valley on the west side, and the rolling hills of the Virginia Piedmont on the east. Although the scenic Skyline Drive is likely the most prominent feature of the park, almost 40% of the land area 79,579 acres (124.3 sq mi; 322.0 km2) has been designated as wilderness and is protected as part of the National Wilderness Preservation System. The highest peak is Hawksbill Mountain at 4,051 feet (1,235 m).

Wow! I actually posted a video! I brought my point and shoot with me on a trip thru Mount Rogers NRA and the Grayson Highlands. It is a crappy old point and shoot, but for what it's worth I also included some shots with my good camera from a few trips to Shenandoah National Park earlier this summer.

SUMMARY
=======
Appalachia () is a cultural region in the Eastern United States that stretches from the Southern Tier of New York to northern Alabama and Georgia. While the Appalachian Mountains stretch from Belle Isle in Canada to Cheaha Mountain in Alabama, the cultural region of Appalachia typically refers only to the central and southern portions of the range, from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, southwesterly to the Great Smoky Mountains. As of the 2010 United States Census, the region was home to approximately 25 million people.Since its recognition as a distinctive region in the late 19th century, Appalachia has been a source of enduring myths and distortions regarding the isolation, temperament, and behavior of its inhabitants. Early 20th century writers often engaged in yellow journalism focused on sensationalistic aspects of the region's culture, such as moonshining and clan feuding, and often portrayed the region's inhabitants as uneducated and prone to impulsive acts of violence. Sociological studies in the 1960s and 1970s helped to re-examine and dispel these stereotypes.While endowed with abundant natural resources, Appalachia has long struggled and been associated with poverty. In the early 20th century, large-scale logging and coal mining firms brought wage-paying jobs and modern amenities to Appalachia, but by the 1960s the region had failed to capitalize on any long-term benefits from these two industries. Beginning in the 1930s, the federal government sought to alleviate poverty in the Appalachian region with a series of New Deal initiatives, such as the construction of dams to provide cheap electricity and the implementation of better farming practices. On March 9, 1965, the Appalachian Regional Commission was created to further alleviate poverty in the region, mainly by diversifying the region's economy and helping to provide better health care and educational opportunities to the region's inhabitants. By 1990, Appalachia had largely joined the economic mainstream, but still lagged behind the rest of the nation in most economic indicators.
