In Hong Kong, the reputed home of the 24-hour suit, a visit to Sam's is a must, for VIP's and vacationers alike. Hong Kong's legendary Sam's Tailor is famous world-wide for its unquestioned reputation for quality and discretion - and a clientele seemingly culled from the pages of the International Who's Who.
Few of Hong Kong's annual nine million tourists and business visitors have not heard of Sam's. Many make a beeline for its Burlington Arcade premises on Kowloon's Nathan Road (the Golden Mile of tat-to-terrific bargains). It's almost as obligatory as a visit one to The Peak or Aberdeen's Jumbo floating restaurant. Sam's is as much an institution in Hong Kong as Macy's in New York or Harrods in London. Its location in one of the smaller territories on earth is no bar to the patronage of kings, queens, presidents, prime ministers and widely assorted glitterati.

The Coming War on China | Documentary Film (English and Spanish subtitles)
The Coming War on China is John Pilger's 60th film for ITV. Pilger reveals what the news doesn't: That the world's greatest military power, the United States, and the world's second economic power, China, both nuclear-armed, are on the road to the third world war. Pilger's film is a warning and an inspiring story of resistance.

China, officially the People's Republic of China (PRC), is a sovereign state in East Asia. It is the world's most populous country, with a population of over 1.35 billion. The PRC is a single-party state governed by the Chinese Communist Party, with its seat of government in the capital city of Beijing.[16] It exercises jurisdiction over 22 provinces, five autonomous regions, four direct-controlled municipalities (Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai and Chongqing), and two mostly self-governing special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau). The PRC also claims the territories governed by the Republic of China (ROC), a separate political entity today commonly known as Taiwan, as a part of its territory, which includes the island of Taiwan as Taiwan Province, Kinmen and Matsu
as a part of Fujian Province and islands the ROC controls in the South China Sea as a part of Hainan Province. These claims are controversial because of the complex political status of Taiwan.
Covering approximately 9.6 million square kilometers, China is the world's second-largest country by land area,[18] and either the third or fourth-largest by total area, depending on the method of measurement.[i] China's landscape is vast and diverse, ranging from forest steppes and the Gobi and Taklamakan deserts in the arid north to subtropical forests in the wetter south. The Himalaya, Karakoram, Pamir and Tian Shan mountain ranges separate China from South and Central Asia. The Yangtze and Yellow Rivers, the third- and sixth-longest in the world, run from the Tibetan Plateau to the densely populated eastern seaboard. China's coastline along the Pacific Ocean is 14,500 kilometres (9,000 mi) long, and is bounded by the Bohai, Yellow, East and South China Seas.
China is considered a cradle of civilization, with its known history beginning with an ancient civilization – one of the world's earliest – that flourished in the fertile basin of the Yellow River in the North China Plain. For millennia, China's political system was based on hereditary monarchies, known as dynasties, beginning with the semi-mythological Xia of the Yellow River basin (c. 2800 BCE). Since 221 BCE, when the Qin Dynasty first conquered several states to form a Chinese empire, the country has expanded, fractured and been reformed numerous times. The Republic of China (ROC) overthrew the last dynasty in 1911, and ruled the Chinese mainland until 1949. After the surrender of the Empire of Japan in World War II, the Communist Party defeated the nationalist Kuomintang in mainland China and established the People's Republic of China in Beijing on 1 October 1949, while the Kuomintang relocated the ROC government to its present capital of Taipei.
China had the largest and most complex economy in the world for most of the past two thousand years, during which it has seen cycles of prosperity and decline.[19][20] Since the introduction of economic reforms in 1978, China has become one of the world's fastest-growing major economies. As of 2014, it is the world's second-largest economy by nominal total GDP and largest by purchasing power parity (PPP). China is also the world's largest exporter and second-largest importer of goods.[21] China is a recognized nuclear weapons state and has the world's largest standing army, with the second-largest defence budget.[22][23] The PRC has been a United Nations member since 1971, when it replaced the ROC as a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council. China is also a member of numerous formal and informal multilateral organizations, including the WTO, APEC, BRICS, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, the BCIM and the G-20. China is a great power and a major regional power within Asia, and has been characterized as a potential superpower by a number of commentators

STORYLINE:
Nineteen finalists in China's first beauty pageant for women who have had plastic surgery made their first outdoor show in a park in north Beijing on Monday.
As the economy soars and people spend more money and time on their looks, an increasing number of Chinese women have undergone plastic surgery.
The government says the country's fast-growing cosmetic surgery industry rakes in 2.4 (b) billion US dollars a year as patients rush to go under the knife to widen eyes, narrow faces and fill out lips and breasts, emerging as renzao meinu - man-made beauties.
The finalists, aged 18 to 62, will vie for the top prize next Saturday after a week of rehearsals.
Other individual prizes will also be awarded for best figure, biggest change and best stage demeanour.
Applicants had to show certificates to prove they had plastic surgery.
The idea for the competition took shape shortly after an 18-year-old woman was disqualified from a Chinese beauty pageant earlier this year because she had plastic surgery. She sued for emotional damage - and lost.
Organisers say they want to emphasise the upside of plastic surgery.
The quest for beauty has been part of Chinese culture for centuries. But after the 1949 Communist takeover, and especially during Mao's 1966-76 Cultural Revolution, the norm changed. Women were recruited for all kinds of jobs. Clothes became unisex as most donned army uniforms or shapeless blue or gray Mao suits and cotton shoes.
In the 1980s, as China engaged the international community, Hong Kong, Japan, and later the United States provided inspiration for women's body images.
By 2001, Chinese were buying five (b) billion US dollars worth of cosmetics products a year, according to the Web site of the China Hair and Beauty Association.

English Speaking Clinic in China (Yihe Hotel Ouzhuang, Guangzhou) 广州颐和商务酒店
I get a lot of questions about medical services for foreigners in China. Thank god, I haven’t had to use any so far, but that I still wanted to get a check up as it’s been a while. English speaking doctors are everywhere, but an English speaking clinic and/or hospital is not as common in the smaller cities. So I took a ride up to Guangzhou to the Eur Am International Medical Center near the American consulate. It was a nice place, the people were great!
Then after a quick bite, I checked into the Yihe Hotel Ouzhuang in Guangzhou. An interesting place but affordable, convenient, and clean. Guangzhou is a beautiful city at night.

Hukou: Residency registration system. A person can either hold rural hukou or urban hukou. Hukou is passed matrilineally. Rural hukou holders get access to collective land, while urban hukou holders get access to danwei.
Danwei: Translated to English as work units. It's supposed to be the provider of welfare provisions to urban workers (e.g. housing, food, etc). These provisions are given to the urbanites from the state through the enterprises.
Great Leap Forward (GLF): An economic and social campaign to accelerate industrial development, spearheaded by Mao Zedong. As such, it was heavily focused on building industries and infrastructure. It didn't go well.

Household Responsibility System (HRS): An agricultural production method wherein groups or individual households were contracted to produce a certain amount of grain based on quotas set by the government. Whatever surplus the farmers produce could be sold on the market at an unregulated price. The quotas were set really low such that farmers could sell almost all of their grain to the market.
Township and Village Enterprise (TVE): Enterprises on the level of townships and villages. Essentially, a renamed CBE.
State Owned Enterprise (SOE): Enterprises run by the government. In this instance mostly in urban areas.
Special Economic Zones (SEZ): (Urban) Areas where (mostly foreign) capitalist enterprises were allowed to operate, mostly in coastal cities. Usually with better tax incentives and lax regulations.
