False Cape Virginia - Overnight Hike - 360 Video
I had a free weekend so I decided to take a hike out to False Cape State Park in Virginia Beach, Virginia. I've lived in Virginia Beach for over 20 years. False Cape and Back Bay wildlife refuge are two of the prettiest parks in Virginia Beach.
False Cape is a unique campground in that you can not drive your car to it. It's a pretty easy camp to get to. In the spring, summer and fall you can ride your bike or hike in. It's about a 5 mile trip from the parking area of Little Island Park in Sandbridge depending on which group of sites you are staying at. I normally bike in but this trip I decided to hike to do some gear testing. Mainly on pack weights and load outs.
My only regret for this trip was deciding to wear some big ole winter boots. I thought it was a good idea to break them in. I couldn't have been more wrong. I was also expecting more standing water as it had rained the day before pretty hard. I'll never do that again. Unless it's snowing!
My total pack weight was around 31lbs. Thats including about 6lbs of camera gear and a couple other unnecessary luxury items like a folding stool and a small espresso maker for my morning coffee. ** after the trip I took inventory of my pack and knocked off about 8lbs just in stuff I didn't need for next time.
The trick out was nice. It was windy with 10-12mph winds gusting up to 15mph. I was glad I brought my trekking poles. Otherwise I would have been stumbling around in the wind.
The hike in took about 2.5 hours. I was taking my time and taking in the scenery and taking pictures and shooting video too. I think you could do it in 2 hours if you hiked straight through. On s bike it takes about 1 hour (again- taking your time). The whole point was to take in the sites and enjoy the walk.
At False Cape you have options for locations to camp. There are clusters of sites. Both on the bay side and the beach side. I prefer the beach side. The sites are a little drier than the bay side. The bay tends to get soggy after a good rain. Plus it's really pretty to hang out in the dunes at night and check out stars.
The grounds include hiking trails. I still have not hiked the whole park but I plan to by the end of next season. They have great accommodations that include a visitor's center with a small informational area and helpful staff. They have snacks and food and bathrooms there. There is also fresh water sources at the visitor center. Some of the camp sites have fresh drinkable water as well. With the exception of sites 7-12. There is water but not drinkable so you'll either need to pack it in or collect it at the visitor's center or other camp sites. Each cluster of sites also includes a clean and maintained pit toilet (two to be exact. one for men and one for women).
The first day was great. I got in and got my site set up. For my camp I had a Dutchware Gear Hexon 1.0 Hammock with bug net, Hammock Gear 20 degree full length under quilt, Nemo 35 degree sleeping bag, and a Chill Gorilla Fortress rain fly. I also have some Dutchware bling for my tarp and hammock. I went withDutchware spider/ poly tree straps with a whoopie sling for my hammock suspension.
My cook set is pretty basic. I brought my Vargo titanium alcohol stove, small 450ml steel pot and Wacaco Minipresso espresso maker. I didn't get fancy with the meals and just went with a couple Mountain House meals. I wasn't staying long so I didn't need much.
The sunset was spectacular that night. One of the reasons I like the beach sites is I was able to make my dinner and then walk up to the beach and eat while the sun was setting.
Being that it was fall when I took this hike the sun was set by 7pm and I was hiking alone. So there wasn't much to do but take in the night time scenes on the beach. I did meet my next door neighbor who was very nice and we chatted on the beach about camping stories and sat in silence watching the (almost) full moon rise through the clouds.
When it was time to sleep it was very peaceful. Camping in False Cape during the summer can be some what of a nuisance. My last trip was in August and the bugs were the worst I have ever seen. It was brutal. But this time the cooler weather kept a lot of them at bay. Giving way to an almost completely quiet night sleep. I could here the ocean from my site and swinging in the breeze every time it blew just rocked me right to sleep.
The next morning I woke up with the sun to a chilly day. I made breakfast and walked to the ocean to take it in one last time.
The clouds and overcast sky broke and gave way to an insanely blue sky with all the white puffy clouds you could ask for. I knew the walk back was going to be long but I also knew it would be pretty.
If you have questions about the gear or locations please send me a message or leave a comment.

The Newseum...
The Newseum — a 250,000-square-foot museum of news — offers visitors an experience that blends five centuries of news history with up-to-the-second technology and hands-on exhibits.
The Newseum is located at the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and Sixth Street, N.W., Washington, D.C., on America's Main Street between the White House and the U.S. Capitol and adjacent to the Smithsonian museums on the National Mall.
The exterior's unique architectural features include a 74-foot-high marble engraving of the First Amendment and an immense front wall of glass through which passers-by can watch the museum fulfill its mission of providing a forum where the media and the public can gain a better understanding of each other.
The Newseum features seven levels of galleries, theaters, retail spaces and visitor services. It offers a unique environment that takes museumgoers behind the scenes to experience how and why news is made.
Washington DC and Virginia Beach are only a short and scenic 3 hour's drive apart.
