Artillery Park opens at Delaware's Cape Henlpen State Park
American military history is on display at the new World War II Artillery Park at Cape Henlopen’s Fort Miles Museum.
A massive, 16-inch gun that once was mounted on the USS Missouri is the centerpiece of the newest addition to the Fort Miles Museum. Friday morning, state leaders celebrated the grand opening of the facility situated inside Cape Henlopen State Park near the mouth of the Delaware Bay.
“Veterans, families, students, visitors and history buffs can relive an important part of Delaware history now surrounded by the buildings and artifacts that will help make the experience come alive,” said DNREC Secretary David Small.
Urban Exploring Abandoned Fort Miles
This is a video I put together of the abandoned Fort Miles in Cape Henlopen State Park in Delaware on 6/11/16.
Fort Miles was an American military installation located on Cape Henlopen near Lewes, Delaware. Although funds to build the fort were approved in 1934, it was 1941 before the fort was constructed. It was built to defend Delaware Bay and the Delaware River and to protect domestic shipping from enemy fire within the capes, particularly from the German surface fleet. The fort also operated a controlled naval minefield to prevent ships entering the Delaware River estuary.
