Grand Opening of the Trimet Orange Line and Tilikum Bridge Portland Oregon
Photos/Video by Guy Bodin Portland Oregon
Tilikum Crossing, Bridge of the People is a cable-stayed bridge across the Willamette River in Portland, Oregon, United States. TriMet, the Portland metropolitan area's regional transit authority, built the bridge for its MAX Orange Line light rail trains, as well as the Portland Streetcar, buses, bicycles, pedestrians, and emergency vehicles. Private cars and trucks will not be permitted on the bridge. The crossing opened for general use on September 12, 2015, becoming the first new bridge built across the river in the Portland metropolitan area since 1973. The first public access to the bridge was given on August 9, 2015, in the morning for the 20th annual Providence Bridge Pedal.
TriMet selected the name of the bridge in April 2014 from a list of four finalists chosen by the public. Tilikum is a Chinook Jargon word meaning people, tribe, or family, and the name is intended to honor the Multnomah, Cascade, Clackamas, and other Chinookan peoples who lived in the area as long as 14,000 years ago. The Tilikum name also references the pervasive use of Chinook Jargon in Portland’s first half century in the frequent trade interactions between pioneers and Native Americans.

Fremont Bridge - Triumph Speed Triple 1050
The Fremont Bridge in Portland, OR is the second longest tied-arch bridge in the world. It has two decks - the top carries traffic south and the bottom carries traffic north. It was fabricated in California, assembled at Swan Island, floated downstream on a barge to the construction site where it was lifted 170 ft. using hydraulic jacks, and it opened in 1973. The two flags (American flag and the Oregon flag) were installed with the use of a helicopter. The bridge was named for John C. Fremont (1813-1890). Fremont was an early explorer of the Oregon country, he served in the United States Army, and ran for president in 1856.

Portland - Oregon - United States
Portland's Tilikum Crossing: A Bridge for People, Not For Cars
In 2015, Portland, Oregon opened North Americas's longest car-free bridge The Tilikum Crossing, a bridge that allows travel for pedestrians, bikes and scooters as well as light rail, streetcars and buses!
It's a superb transportation marvel, not only elegant but one of the most multi-modal places in the United States connecting logical routes not only now but in the future as Portland's Southwest waterfront continues to go thru its development. It also connects to the equally exquisite aerial tram to Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) which in turn boasts the largest bicycle valet service in North America!
Being around the area on a few summer days it's easy to see all this beauty and planned car-free options in action.
Here's Streetfilms' love letter to Tilkum which makes the case for other cities considering transportation options near bodies of water that there are many great reasons to do it the same way. There is virtually no noise. The footprint of the bridge is small since interconnecting off-ramps and large roads taking up valuable real estate is not needed. The comfort for those using active transit (bikes and walking) was carefully considered. And the fact that it can accommodate three different modes of transit: streetcars, light rail and three bus routes is a huge selling point.
And the final wonderful feature: the LED lights on the span change colors based upon the temperature and water level of the Willamette River! Believe me on a beautiful summer night you want to stay on it forever.

The Sturgeon Bay Bridge (known as the Michigan Street Bridge) is a historic bridge in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, United States. The bridge was built in 1929 and opened July 4, 1931, with a grand parade where it was officially dedicated as a Door County Veterans Memorial which plaques at either end still reads “To honor those who gave of themselves, to their country, in times of need” as a gift by the State of Wisconsin. The bridge carried Maple and Michigan Streets traffic, which was signed as Wisconsin Business Highway 42/57. The Sturgeon Bay Bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on January 17, 2008. In September 2008, the bridge was closed to allow restoration work after the opening of a new parallel bridge nearby, and was reopened in the spring of 2011.

List of tallest buildings in Portland, Oregon
This list of tallest buildings in Portland, Oregon ranks skyscrapers in the U.S. city of Portland, Oregon. The tallest building in Portland is currently the 41-story Wells Fargo Center, which rises 546 feet. The building has been the tallest skyscraper in the State of Oregon since its completion in 1972. The second-tallest building in Portland is the US Bancorp Tower, which rises 536 feet and 42 floors. The building is sometimes informally referred to as 'Big Pink' for its similarly colored granite exterior.
Portland's history of skyscrapers is generally thought to begin in 1907 with the completion of the Wells Fargo Building. Since then, over 100 highrise buildings have been constructed in the city, with the majority being completed between 1970 and 2000. No Portland buildings are among the tallest in the United States, but the city is home to four buildings over 500 feet. Overall, Portland's skyline is ranked tall second in the Northwest, fifth in the Pacific Coast region, and 25th in the United States.
The city is undergoing an era of highrise construction, especially in the South Waterfront area, where several residential towers and an office building have been built over the past few years, including the John Ross Tower. More residential buildings will be built close to the Willamette River as development of the South Waterfront progresses. Meanwhile, in Downtown Portland, Park Avenue West Tower, a 30-story skyscraper, restarted construction in 2012 and is now almost completed. At 501 feet, Park Avenue West will become the fourth-tallest building in the city upon completion.
This list ranks Portland skyscrapers that stand at least 250 feet tall, based on standard height measurement. This includes spires and architectural details but does not include antenna masts. An equal sign following a rank indicates the same height between two or more buildings. The 'Year' column indicates the year in which a building was completed.
This lists skyscrapers that are under construction in Portland and planned to rise over 250 feet.
* Table entries without text indicate that information regarding building dates of completion has not yet been released.
This lists buildings that once held the title of tallest building in Portland.
The 194-foot height of the 1892 Oregonian Building includes a corner tower with two floors of office space and a clock in the uppermost portion. The Wells Fargo Building was the tallest building in 1907–1911 only if this tower is excluded from the Oregonian Building's measurement.

Solar retailer finally in Portland Oregon - Light Harvest Solar
Miles has been selling solar panels and related equipment from home for a while and has finally opened up a sort of storefront. He is one of the very few people in this area with extensive knowledge and testing off grid system components. I rode over on my bike today to pick up a charge controller and to check out the storefront. This guy walk the walk. His business is off grid and he commutes in a veggie car. The business district looks like some characters from the Scifi show Defiance are right around the corner, but this is one of very few places in the region with solar equipment and panels on the shelf available for cash sales, and someone who actually knows what he is talking about evaluating and giving realistic advice on other components like charge controllers.
