HK a green financing hub (29.10.2018)
Chief Executive Carrie Lam:
Subject to the authorisation of the legislature, my Government will launch a green bond issuance programme with a borrowing ceiling of HK$100 billion, making it among the largest sovereign green bond issuance programmes in the world. We have also launched the Green Bond Grant Scheme, which subsidises the costs issuers incur in obtaining certification under our Green Finance Certification Scheme. In short, we hope to make Hong Kong a fund-raising hub for green projects, and encourage more Belt & Road investors and issuers to participate in the Hong Kong bond market.
Closer at home to achieve interconnected development is the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Thanks to the opening of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong high speed rail and the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge over the past month or so, there is now a one-hour living zone which will provide excellent opportunities for Hong Kong businesses and service providers to collaborate with their Mainland counterparts to pursue new drivers of growth such as in jointly developing an international innovation and technology hub. Hong Kong booming as international art hub
(21 Mar 2017) LEADIN
Organisers of this year's Art Basel Hong Kong say the fair is bigger than ever before - thanks to international galleries wanting to take advantage of the Asia market.
It's the latest in a line of prestigious art fairs to throw open its doors in Hong Kong, which has become Asia's main art trading hub.
STORYLINE:
Paintings, large scale art installations and audio-visual art work fill the galleries of Art Basel Hong Kong.
242 galleries from 34 countries and territories are exhibiting works at the show, which opens to the public for three days starting on Thursday (23rd March 2017).
Art Basel Hong Kong is now in its fifth year. The Asia director of the event is Adeline Ooi:
In terms of the progress of the past years, I think everything has been very positive, I think the quality of the show is improving from year on year, and I think also in terms of the collectors and people who come and visit our shows, the number of museums and institutions, so definitely I would like to think we are moving from strength to strength.
Chinese-Australian artist Shen Shaomin has brought late communist leaders Vladimir Lenin, Kim Il Sung, Mao Zedong, Fidel Castro and Ho Chi Minh to the exhibition hall for a G5 summit.
Created in 2009, the installation of the five communist icons is an attempt to raise the rethinking of what is the best ideology today.
Shen defends his decision to make an art work that depicts the corpse of Chinese communist leader Mao Zedong.
If I said I am not worried at all, that is impossible. But I personally believe this won't cause problems. This is a very true display and we keep their very solemn state of their actual body at that time. We show it in a realistic way and we didn't show disrespect, and there are exhibitions about Mao, it is just a different location here, he says.
The installation has been exhibited in Sydney, Singapore, Lyon and Hong Kong, and Shao says the installation has not been shown in the countries that the deceased leaders had ruled.
Communism became a symbol, or element of contemporary art. A lot of artworks are related to that. For example, a lot of artists use Mao. Many Chinese artists use housing demolition and relocation as a symbol in their artwork. Mao and also communism as symbols are widely used. I think in addition to art itself, it is also a very rich symbol in values.
These yellow taxidermied rats have been painted to look like Pikachu, a character in Pokemon which enjoyed a worldwide craze last year .
Yukio Kakiuchi, from a Japanese gallery, says the artist, Chim Pom, caught the rats in the streets of Shibuya and made them into art.
These rats were actually caught in the streets of Shibuya and where the rats are abundant, and they are despised, as they are pests. But they are called 'Super Rats' by the exterminators, because they developed their tolerance, and they got smarter to not to be caught and killed. So they are over-wrapping themselves with a super rat survive in urban setting and striving. So they are kind of like self-portrait for the artist as well. And because around that time, Pikachu was on trend and the girls were dressing in outfits like Pikachu, so that also operated the idea of copying the Pikachu lookalike.
This year's show features 29 new galleries and half of the galleries showing overall have exhibition spaces in Asia and the Asia Pacific region. The show takes place at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre and runs from 23 - 25 March 2017.

HK urged to develop green finance (24.5.2016)
The Financial Services Development Council has made a number of recommendations for Hong Kong to consolidate its position as a leading centre for green finance in a report released today.
Council chairman Laura Cha said a flourishing green finance business can assist Hong Kong in promoting the development of its bond and project finance markets, as well as increase employment opportunities and boost growth in the investment management, derivative, insurance and private equity industries.
Hong Kong should seize the opportunities to position itself as a leading hub for the provision of green finance and investment, she added.
The report suggested issuing benchmark green bonds by government and public-sector controlled issuers and establishing a Green Finance Advisory Council or a similar body to provide ongoing focus and assistance.
It also proposed hosting a global conference and seminar series on green finance and investment, building a cohort of green finance professionals, and establishing a Green Labelling Scheme covering projects and securities to attract issuers and new investors to Hong Kong.
Mrs Cha said billions of US dollars are needed annually to fund low-carbon assets to meet global commitments in achieving low emissions. China is now playing a leadership role in green finance and the National 13th Five-Year Plan makes a number of references to green finance priorities.
The Financial Secretary also made reference to green finance in his 2016-17 Budget which states that the Government will strengthen efforts to publicise its competitive capital markets and highlight Hong Kong's edge in developing green financial products, she added.
Green finance is a broad term that refers to capital raising and financial investments flowing into projects, products and companies that support the development of a more sustainable, low-carbon and climate-resilient economy. Examples of such projects and objectives include clean energy, pollution control, green buildings, transport and infrastructure, energy efficiency and sustainable resource management as well as environmental services, such as waste management and sustainable forestry.
The Hong Kong as a regional green finance hub report is available on the council's website. (

Shenzhen: City of the Future. The high-tech life of China’s Silicon Valley
More films about China:
- Technology and innovation hub, Shenzhen is known as China’s “silicon valley” and “the city of the future”.
- Once a fishing village, in just 50 years it grew into a megacity packed with skyscrapers.
- It hosts international technology exhibitions and forums and attracts creators and investors from around the world, contributing to its population boom
- Inventors and engineers working here, create helpful robots, hybrid cars and smart car parks
China has a saying; to see the past, visit Beijing, to see the present, go to Shanghai but for the future, it’s Shenzhen. Shenzhen has transformed itself from a tiny fishing village to a megacity in just 50 years, its population tripling since the 1990s. The city is a magnet for tech-savvy and inventive dreamers from all across China and the world, because of them Shenzhen has become the “silicon valley” of China, a true technology and innovation hub.
The sprawling metropolis is famed for its skyscrapers, hybrid cars, solar energy and for being home to a great many hi-tech companies. UBTECH is one of them; its focus is on making robots an indispensable part of everyday life. Its key product is the android – a human-like robot that can help out in the workplace and around the home as well as becoming both teacher and playmate for kids.
Shenzhen municipal government encourages citizens to switch to eco-friendly, hybrid cars that use both fuel and solar energy. The vehicles are made by a local manufacturer, BYD. Public transport here is hybrid too helping maintain the city’s ecological reputation, which is among the best in China. The city’s rapid growth demands new solutions for optimising space. Shenzhen is one of the top 10 cities in the world for having the most skyscrapers. Today, its engineers are working on a solution to the ever present problem of parking by developing smart car parks that can automatically place cars in tight spaces while the driver simply walks away.
The technological achievements of the city's many companies are regularly showcased at popular international exhibitions and forums.

Asia is increasingly weighed down by electronic waste and it's in Hong Kong that the situation is the most alarming. The city produces nearly 200,000 tons of electronic waste every year - that's more than 20 kilos per inhabitant. The situation has been exacerbated by mainland China tightening its controls on waste - meaning that computers, printers and monitors are now piling up in Hong Kong. Our correspondents report on the environmental consequences.

About the show:
It was a legendary trading route that for thousands of years connected Europe with Asia, and ancient Rome with Ancient China. Known as the Silk Road, it stretched through some of the most rugged terrain in the world 2000 years ago.
Now modern China is building a new Silk Road. The New Silk Road, also known as the One Belt One Road plan, is a hugely ambitious initiative launched by Presdent Xi Jinping in 2013. It will link up over 65 countries and 4.4 billion people. That is about 60 percent of the world’s population.
Channel NewsAsia’s documentary team has travelled across the globe to 7 regions to investigate what the Silk Road means for individuals, companies and countries. The epic journey will take viewers from the future ports of China to naval bases in the Philippines, to safaris in Africa, wushu schools in Iran and ghettos in Greece.
The program received an Award for Best Documentary (International Affairs) at the New York Festivals.
