SNAKE SOUP in Hong Kong episode 1:
Welcome to the second episode of our Hong Kong street food series. Today, we will be showing you some of the best and affordable street food and local, traditional food you can find in the Sham Shui Po area, a district that preserves the feel of Old Hong Kong - where the locals live!
To start our day, we have a traditional beef sandwich with a Hong Kong style milk tea (total 37 HKD / 4.71 USD). The beef was juicy and tender. No extra sauce needed! We explore the Sham Shui Po market for tons of shopping and locate a rare street food at a shop specializing in soy bean. We had fried tofu chunks stuffed with fish paste. It was awesome watching the chefs prepare the tofu. This snack was so delicious and CHEAP (15 HKD / 1.91 USD for 5 pieces). And of course, we washed it down with fresh soy milk (7 HKD / 0.89 USD). Continuing through the street food market, we came by a Cantonese classic dish - cheong fun! This stall was unique however because the shape of the cheong fun (10 HKD / 1.27 USD for small) was rolled into small bites like the Korean street food Tteokbokki. Such a great street food to enjoy in a small Hong Kong alleyway! To end the day, we eat at one of the most important street food restaurants in all of Hong Kong, at a dai pai dong. Dai pai dong’s are quite important because they are quickly disappearing off the streets and becoming modernized. There are only a few left that truly preserve the culture of Hong Kong and Oi Man Sang is one of the few! We had Hong Kong style clams, beef and rice street side! It all was mouthwatering and the chefs were cooking right on the street (298 HKD / 37.96 USD including beers).

????COCKROACH AND GINSENG TEA: Place cockroach and ginseng in a clay pot with 3 cups of water. Close the pot and let it boil for 45 mins and then serve.
????GECKO SOUP: Cut the gecko open and clean. Place its body and tail in a small pot with cow penis, dried sea horse, silk worm, pipefish and chinese medicine ingredients. Add water and cook for at least 4 hours.
????SNAKE SOUP: Wash, clean and deskin the snake and then steam it for 40 minutes. Flesh its meat out of the bones and chop into small pieces. Place snake bones and pork bone broth in a pot for 4 hours. Pour some broth into another pot and add woodears, minced chicken meat, snake meat, ginger and mushrooms. Add chicken stock, corn starch liquid, chinese wine and soy sauce in the broth pot. Cook and serve when it's ready.

China, the gateway to East Asia, is a fascinating country. It is an ancient civilization that gave the world Peking Man, gunpowder and noodles. Visitors making their first trip to China usually stick to the larger cities. More experienced visitors to the Middle Kingdom will strike out in other directions, where traveling may be a bit more frustrating because of the language barrier, but most definitely doable for independent travelers. Hong Kong Tramways (HKT) (Chinese: 香港電車) is a 3 ft 6 in (1,067 mm) narrow-gauge heritage tram system in Hong Kong. Owned and operated by RATP Dev Transdev Asia, the tramway runs on Hong Kong Island between Kennedy Town and Shau Kei Wan, with a branch circulating through Happy Valley. Hong Kong's tram system is one of the earliest forms of public transport in the metropolis, having opened in 1904 under British rule. It has used electric trams since its inauguration, and has never used horse or steam power. It owns the world's largest operational double-decker tram fleet, and is a very rare example of a tram system that uses them exclusively. In addition to being used by commuters, the system is popular with tourists, and is one of the most environmentally friendly ways of travelling in the city.

Visit Hong Kong Plover Cove Reservoir
Now part of the Hong Kong Geopark, Plover Cove Reservoir was completed in 1968 and holds 230 million cubic metres of water. The reservoir was built in a very unusual way. Rather than build a dam across a river, of which Hong Kong has very few, a barrier was erected across the mouth of a great bay. The sea water was siphoned out and fresh water -- mostly piped in from the mainland -- was pumped in.

This is the LAST episode of our Hong Kong street food series. In today’s episode, we will be eating the most CLASSIC street foods at local restaurants including DIM SUM, ROAST GOOSE, HONG KONG NOODLES, AND EGG TARTS WITH HONG KONG MILK TEA! Today, we are eating like a local!
For breakfast, we choose a very traditional and local dim sum restaurant that is street side. We ate siao mai, char siu bao, shrimp cheong fun, beef balls and tea. So delicious, healthy and WAY cheaper than some modern dim sum shops (81 HKD / 10.32 USD). We ride the Ding Ding (trams) toward Central Hong Kong to head to one of the BEST and Michelin recommended roast goose shops in all of Hong Kong - Yat Lok. Although quite expensive, this shop has PERFECTED the roast goose recipe and is worth it. The skin holds so many dimensions of flavour and the meat underneath is extremely tender and SO JUICY (223 HKD / 28.41 USD for quarter goose with drumstick). We were quite full so we took a walk down through the Fish Market. Later in the day, we visit a place that is known to serve some of the most traditional style Hong Kong “cart noodles” in the city. For a cheap price, you can assemble the bowl exactly how you want it. We recommend the braised chicken wing, radish and spicy sauce. Don’t forget to add the Sichuan oil if you love the “mala” flavour. Man Kee Cart Noodle began as a traditional cart serving noodles which expanded into a very popular restaurant while maintain the original taste (31 HKD / 3.95 USD per bowl). Finally, after being quite full, we head for a dessert at a cafe that has not changed over the MANY years it has been open. Packed with an older generation of Hong Kong folk, this cafe serves a perfect Hong Kong egg tart paired with a classic HK milk tea (20 HKD / 2.55 USD tart + tea). SO DELICIOUS and a great way to end our insane street food tour & series in Hong Kong!

Causeway Bay Hong Kong is a really convenient place to live - only 3km away from central and 3 metro stops away on the Island Line, MTR. You get the advantage of living in the centre of Hong Kong without the ridiculous prices. It is still expensive ($9500) but that's the price you'd pay for a room in a shared flat in Central.
I would say that $9500 for a studio flat, small apartment in Hong Kong is a pretty good deal for a flat in Causeway Bay and would love to recommend the place where I rent from but I have to say that it's a shambles, with so much to repair. There are a few things I wish I knew before finding a flat in Hong Kong, which I will address in a blog post.
If you're looking for somewhere to rent, I strongly discourage you to rent from Studio4Rent.com.hk. Their small apartments in Hong Kong may seem lucratively cheap but are faulty and need a lot of repairing. I've had a lot of problems since I've moved in, including getting locked out but that's for another video.
In Hong Kong I was able to rent a studio apartment for 6 weeks, which is uncommon in England and other countries. However in Hong Kong there's plenty of options for short term stays from serviced apartments, shared apartments, airbnb and even couchsurfing.

There are tons of small serviced apartments in Hong Kong, it depends which region you want to live in.

Don't expect to get much room for your money though, Hong Kong is absolutely ridiculous value wise. I thought London was expensive but at least you get a bigger space.
You can get a bigger space in Hong Kong if you live off the main island, in New Territories or on one of the other Islands. I personally would rather sacrifice a small space to live in closer proximity to Central. Long term wise, I don’t think I could deal with it. It’s probably why I wouldn’t want to live in Hong Kong long term. Or perhaps I’ll just live off the main island next time and instead of living in a small apartment in Hong Kong Island, I’ll live in a bigger place elsewhere.
Having said that my small apartment in Hong Kong is pretty cosy but it can get really claustrophobic if you stay inside for too long (introvert problems lol). My sister is currently staying with me and it feels even smaller. Literally no space for 2 people but still liveable.

Hong Kong is a city JAM PACKED with amazing street food and seafood! It is also home to some RARE and UNKNOWN dishes!
We start our street food tour at a unique Cantonese restaurant that serves poisonous SNAKE SOUP! It was SUPER delicious! The ancient recipe is over 2000 years old and this shop has been serving it over 100 years! (65 HKD - 8.28 USD)

Last but not least, we go to FEAST on some Hong Kong SEAFOOD. HK is known for having some of the freshest and BEST seafood in the world. We explore all of the street food seafood stalls and find one in the famous TEMPLE STREET NIGHT MARKET! Along the classic sweet and sour meat, we order some BIG and juicy scallops. Topped with butter, chilis, glass noodles and garlic - you can’t go wrong when seafood is served street side and cooked Hong Kong style! (202 HKD - 25.74 USD)

Macau Travel Guide - Macao Day Trip from Hong Kong
Come join us for a day trip from Hong Kong (香港) as we visit Macau covering the best things to do in one day in our Macau Travel Guide (澳門 - 澳门).
We started off our day waking up early in Hong Kong to get to the ferry terminal to take a TurboJET ferry to Macao. *Important* remember to take your passport as you're crossing one special administration region in China to another (Hong Kong to Macau) and you'll need to go through immigration on both sides (it doesn't take long).
After arriving we took free transportation (provided by the casinos and hotels) to check out the Venetian Casino and Parisian Hotel. Then we were off to Taipa to mostly eat Macau street food and enjoy the old colonial architecture.
We then made our way to Senado Square, the ruins of St. Paul's and Forte Monte while munching on plenty of Macanese street food before heading back to Hong Kong on a TurboJET ferry.
As you can see you can do a lot in just one day in Macau but a few things we didn't get to do included gambling at casinos, going up Macau Tower or checking out the A-Ma temple. For more of the things we missed out on but are worth considering doing in Macau see our two lists below.

Well good morning from Hong Kong. It is seven in the morning. A little early to be out in my opinion but today we're going to Macau. Special day.
So we've got our tickets for Macau. Woo! 160 Hong Kong dollars each. It is just over $20 US bucks and they give you your seats as you basically arrive. Just after you go through immigration. Yeah so we just got these little stickers. We're 17M and 17K and guys don't forget to bring your passport because technically you're going to a different special administrative region. You're going from Hong Kong to Macau.
