Texas hot springs, Big bend National Park
Big Bend National Park 2019 Boquillas Hot Springs Canyon Trail. The trail goes up and down over several ridges from the Rio Grande Village area to the Hot Springs. Start out early as it can be very hot with the sun reflecting off the rocks. Hike the 6-miles roundtrip, a beautiful hike, steep at first. Coming from RGV, the scenery is more beautiful after the first half of the trail when the Rio Grande becomes more visible. There is an option of driving close via Hot Springs Road and then a short walk there.... don't do it, take the hike. The experience of the hot springs is enhanced after you've earned it (via a fairly difficult and gorgeous 3 mile hike.
Ep. 119: Big Bend National Park | Texas RV travel camping
In this episode of Grand Adventure we're deep in the Chihuahuan Desert, the second largest desert in North America. We're right on the Mexican border, on the banks of the Rio Grande River in the Big Bend area of beautiful West Texas. This is part 1 of our two-part series from the Big Bend.
We're visiting Big Bend National Park. This National Park is massive, encompassing 801,000 acres, the largest protected area of Chihuahuan Desert topography and ecology in the United States. It includes approximately 118 miles of America's national boundary with Mexico along the Rio Grande, designated a wild and scenic river. We'll see Boquillas Canyon, the Boquillas Port of Entry river crossing to Mexico, the Hot Springs Historic Area, Panther Junction, the Chisos Mountains and Chisos Basin, and the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive. We'll show you the National Park's Rio Grande Village Campground, Chisos Basin Campground and Cottonwood Campground, as well as Maverick Ranch RV Park at Lajitas Golf Resort in the tiny riverside hamlet of Lajitas, where we're staying ourselves.

We'll provide tips and insight on equipping and maintaining your RV, trip planning and travel videos to make your next adventure a grand one indeed! So, subscribe to make sure that you catch every episode, and remember...life is nothing but a Grand Adventure!

Hot Springs, Big Bend National Park
we hiked from our campsite to the hot springs, it was about a mile to the beginning of the trail and almost 3 miles to the spring. the hike took 4 hours. Along the way we ran into a Park Ranger as we were looking to see if there was a full moon out. Taking a break for a quick family photo where the water had made beautiful cut outs in the rocks. we were fortunate enough to hitch a ride back to the shark with a guy from LA, we gave him some of our pot roast we had cooking all day!! nice one Sue.

Big Bend National Park in the U.S. state of Texas has national significance as the largest protected area of Chihuahuan Desert topography and ecology in the United States. It contains more than 1,200 species of plants, more than 450 species of birds, 56 species of reptiles, and 75 species of mammals. The national park covers 801,163 acres.
Big Bend is one of the largest, most remote, and least-visited national parks in the lower 48 United States. In recent years, only 300,000–350,000 visitors have entered the park annually.
Big Bend's primary attraction is its hiking and backpacking trails. Particularly notable among these are the Chimneys Trail, which visits a rock formation in the desert; the Marufo Vega trail, a loop trail that passes through scenic canyons on the way to and from the Rio Grande; the South Rim trail which circles the high mountains of the Chisos; and the Outer Mountain Loop trail in the Chisos, which incorporates parts of the South Rim loop, descends into the desert along the Dodson Trail, and then returns to the Chisos Basin, completing a 30-mile loop. Other notable locations include Santa Elena Canyon, Grapevine Hills, and the Mule Ears, two imposing rock towers in the middle of the desert. Professional backpacking guide services provide trips in the park.
The park administers 118 miles (190 km) of the Rio Grande for recreational use. Professional river outfitters provide tours of the river. Use of a personal boat is permitted, but a free river float permit is required. In June 2009, the Department of Homeland Security began treating all float trips as trips that had left the country and required participants to have an acceptable form of identification such as a passport to re-enter the country.
Five paved roads are in Big Bend. Persimmon Gap to Panther Junction is a 28-mile (45 km) road from the north entrance of the park to park headquarters at Panther Junction. Panther Junction to Rio Grande Village is a 21-mile (34 km) road that descends 2,000 feet (610 m) from the park headquarters to the Rio Grande. Maverick Entrance Station to Panther Junction is a 23-mile (37 km) route from the western entrance of the park to the park headquarters. Chisos Basin Road is 6 miles (10 km) long and climbs to 5,679 feet (1,731 m) above sea level at Panther Pass before descending into the Chisos Basin. The 30-mile (48 km) Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive leads to the Castolon Historic District and Santa Elena Canyon.
The park was named after the area, which is bounded by a large bend in the river and Texas-Mexico border.
Despite its harsh desert environment, Big Bend has more than 1200 species of plants (including 60 cactus species), over 600 species of vertebrates, and about 3600 insect species. The variety of life is largely due to the diverse ecology and changes in elevation between the dry, hot desert, the cool mountains, and the fertile river valley.
Big Bend National Park
Filmed in February of 2017 when the park was a beautiful mid 60's all weekend long. Hiked the Santa Elena Canyon Trail and the entire Chisos Mountains Trail while backpacking and spending two nights in the backcountry. We also hit up the Historic Hot Springs District.

Canoeing The Rio Grande in Big Bend National Park
Here we are canoeing the Rio Grande in Big Bend National Park. We originally wanted to do the Santa Elena Canyon but the water was too low in May. It still ended up be an amazing experience as we were able to swim in the Rio Grande and take a dip in the natural hot spring as well. We ended up with a private tour with the Big Bend River Tours do to nobody else signing up. Our tour guide James was really great as he explained and showed us so many interesting things. The meal he served was also hit the spot.
Cicadas of Summer at Big Bend National Park, Historical Hot Springs
Love the sounds of summer.
Cicadas are Mother Nature's temperature gauge.
We were on the path towards the Rio Grande River, where the well-loved Hot Springs are located. I was overcome by the sounds. It was very bright and hot June day and the cicadas were sounding their alarms. At the spot I filmed there's an old stone adobe building and huge palm tree, a hot Texas desert scene if ever there was one.

Water below Apache Spring October 2012
We finally found water in Apache Canyon in Big Bend National Park! We hiked in from the West and were some miles in. I was out of water after a mishap with the spout of my camelback while on a break; I lost all 3L! I knew we would find water, I could smell it all around, but it was my wife, Sandi, who spotted the small seep I had climbed over three times already.

Historicorps Big Bend
Time lapse/video of historic barn restoration.
I volunteered to work with Historicorps on a restoration project in CA by Donner Pass on Hwy 80. They are a non-profit organization that restores historic land marks and uses volunteer labor for each project. This was a rewarding experience and one that I look forward to doing again.
This was an emigrant trail through the central Sierra Mountain Range that was fist used in 1844. You can read about the history of it below.
History: In the 1800s, Big Bend was a popular pit stop for those traveling West over Donner Summit looking to strike it rich in the California Gold Rush. The Stevens-Townsend-Murphy Party set up their camp in this location in 1844, four years before California became a state. Their camp encouraged more travelers and settlers to the area, and by the 20th century, the town of Big Bend was booming due to its location next to a natural hot springs. In the 1930s, the Pacific Gas and Electric Company began construction on a hydroelectric dam in the compressed area. This brought several new jobs and settlers to Big Bend and several new buildings were added including the barn, firehouse and residences.

Hidden Petroglyphs of Big Bend National Park
Big Bend National Park contains more than 1,200 species of plants, more than 450 species of birds, 56 species of reptiles, and 75 species of mammals. The park has many geological features including sea fossils and dinosaur bones, and is also rich in cultural history. The archeological sites date back nearly 10,000 years.
One feature of Big Bend National Park is the abundance of petroglyphs – images carved into stone. The guide books will tell you about those that are most visited, but we found an area that is not so well-known. It contains what I call the “hidden petroglyphs” of Big Bend National Park.
I think the reason the area is not visited much is that it is remote from the rest of the well-traveled park and, therefore, you have to make an effort to go see it. That is the good news! If you want to see some archeological, go to the “Indian Head Trail” described in my video.
