The area around Idaho Falls was first sparsely settled by cattle and sheep ranchers, but no significant development took place until 1864, when a man named Harry Rickets built and operated a ferry on the Snake River at 43°36.112′N 112°3.528′W. The ferry served a new tide of westward migration and travel on the Montana Trail following the Bear River Massacre of Shoshone Indians in 1863. The present-day site of Idaho Falls became a permanent settlement when freighter Matt Taylor built a timber-frame toll bridge across a narrow black basaltic gorge of the river 7 miles (11 km) downstream from the ferry. The bridge improved travel for settlers moving north and west, and for miners, freighters, and others seeking riches in the gold fields of Idaho and Montana—especially the boom towns of Bannack and Virginia City.

River Walk along Idaho Falls Greenbelt nearing completion
IDAHO FALLS -- Along River Parkway near Broadway construction continues to detour drivers and pedestrians. Members of the community said they are anticipating the change.
“To upgrade it will only improve it, and I think it’s a great idea,” resident Joseph Peabody said.
The facelift will take what used to be six foot river walk and make it close to 16 feet wide.
The city hopes the $850,000 change will make this section of the Greenbelt more attractive.
“It’s going to be a lot nicer once it get’s completed, but I can live with the inconvenience for the short time it’s going to happen,” resident Phil Poole said.
According to Parks and Recreation Director Greg Weitzel the funding is provided by local, state and federal grants.
The extra grant money has allowed construction to start sooner than planned.
ITD (Idaho Transportation Department) actually programmed this project to be done next year,” Assistant Public Works Director Chris Canfield said, because of available funding we are able to move forward with the project this fall.”
Officials sat the River Walk will be ready for use in about six to 8 weeks, and final touches will be added in next spring.
This is our front door, the Greenbelt for both residents and visitors alike I think it's going to be very well received once it's completed, Weitzel said.
Guard rails are also being added to the bridge walk making it safer for pedestrians.

IDAHO FALLS — Major changes are in store for the Idaho Falls greenbelt.
“Right now if two bikers were to come towards each other on the path, one would either have to choose the narrow strip next to the river or the road,” Mayor Rebecca Casper told EastIdahoNews.com reporters as they rode with her during the annual Mayor’s Bike Ride on Monday. “By installing a wider path, we give both pedestrians and bikers the opportunity to use the path safely.”
Casper and other city officials cut the ribbon for the new path along the greenbelt during the event.
Modifications will take place on the east side of the river on Riverside Drive starting after the Fourth of July celebration. City officials say a 12-foot blacktop path will be installed. The path will be wide enough as to allow bikers, joggers and walkers alike.
Future plans also include signage, safer walking access near the falls and permanent tunnels under the Broadway Bridge and U.S. Highway 20 bridge.
A name change is also in the works.
“We are transitioning over from calling it the greenbelt to the River Walk instead,” City of Idaho Falls spokeswoman Kerry McCullough told EastIdahoNews.com. “This is one of the changes we made with the new city-wide wayfinding signage program. ‘River Walk’ is more universal than ‘greenbelt.'”

Public Open House to Begin at Idaho Falls Idaho Temple
Latter-day Saints in southeastern Idaho are ready to host thousands of visitors to the newly renovated Idaho Falls Idaho Temple. Following more than two years of extensive interior renovation, a public open house is scheduled to begin at the historic temple, located on the picturesque banks of the Snake River. The temple closed in March 2015 for renovations.
Kevin Call is one of the many residents who grew up in the Upper Snake River Valley. “Our family has been in the valley since the turn of the century in the early 1900s. The temple has been a prominent thing for us, not only church wise but community wise. It's been such a monument on the river, a beautiful place,” said Call.
The valley’s first Mormon settlers arrived with the railroad in 1879.
“The Idaho Falls Temple is this grand architectural statement about where the Church wanted [to] be in its next hundred years, as much as the Salt Lake Temple is a statement about where it had been for the last hundred years,” said Emily Utt, historic sites curator for the Church History Department. “We wanted this temple to still feel like it had been built in the 1940s. We didn't want this to feel like a brand-new building.”
All the mechanical and electrical systems in the temple were upgraded. “The team spent lots of time reviewing the historical data that we had on the temple,” said Mark Berry, a project manager for the Church. “The architect and the design teams went back through and picked out the type of materials that [were] prevalent back in the original temple.”

4K City Walks: Boise, Idaho virtual treadmill walking tour
We visited Boise Idaho for our latest 4K virtual treadmill walking tour. We start out in the hotel district and walk up towards the capitol building, into a nearby residential area with large houses, and then back through the restaurant district.
Boise is a bustling hip city with lots of places to stay, hotels, motels and AirBnBs. There are lots of great restaurants, breweries, and coffee shops. There are bird and Lime scooters all over the place.
We had a great time in this modern vibrant city.

The Boise-Nampa metropolitan area, also known as the Treasure Valley, includes five counties with a combined population of 709,845, the most populous metropolitan area in Idaho. It contains the state's three largest cities; Boise, Nampa, and Meridian. Boise is the 80th most populous metropolitan statistical area in the United States
Accounts differ regarding the origin of the name. One account credits Capt. B.L.E. Bonneville of the U.S. Army as its source. After trekking for weeks through dry and rough terrain, his exploration party reached an overlook with a view of the Boise River Valley. The place where they stood is called Bonneville Point, located on the Oregon Trail east of the city. According to the story, a French-speaking guide, overwhelmed by the sight of the verdant river, yelled Les bois! Les bois! (The woods! The woods!)—and the name stuck.
The name may instead derive from earlier mountain men, who named the river that flows through it. In the 1820s, French Canadian fur trappersset trap lines in the vicinity. Set in a high-desert area, the tree-lined valley of the Boise River became a distinct landmark, an oasis dominated by cottonwood trees. They called this La rivière boisée, which means the wooded river.

The area was called Boise long before the establishment of Fort Boise by the federal government. The original Fort Boise was 40 miles (64 km) west, near Parma, down the Boise River near its confluence with the Snake River at the Oregon border. This private sector defense was erected by the Hudson's Bay Company in the 1830s. It was abandoned in the 1850s, but massacres along the Oregon Trail prompted the U.S. Army to re-establish a fort in the area in 1863 during the U.S. Civil War.
The new location was selected because it was near the intersection of the Oregon Trail with a major road connecting the Boise Basin (Idaho City) and the Owyhee (Silver City) mining areas, both of which were booming. During the mid-1860s, Idaho City was the largest city in the Northwest, and as a staging area, Fort Boise grew rapidly; Boise was incorporated as a city 156 years ago in 1863. The first capital of the Idaho Territory was Lewiston in north central Idaho, which in 1863 was the largest community, exceeding the populations of Olympia and Seattle, Washington Territory and Portland, Oregon combined. The original territory was larger than Texas. But following the creation of Montana Territory, Boise was made the territorial capital of a much reduced Idaho in a controversial decision which overturned a district court ruling by a one-vote majority in the territorial supreme court along geographic lines in 1866.
Boise has a semi-arid continental weather climate, with four distinct seasons. Boise experiences hot and dry summers with highs reaching 100 °F (38 °C) eight days in a typical year and 90 °F (32 °C) on 51 days. Yet because of the aridity, average diurnal temperature variation exceeds 30 °F (17 °C) in summer. Winters are moderately cold, with a December average of 30.7 °F (−0.7 °C), and lows falling to 0 °F (−18 °C) or below on around three nights per year. Snowfall averages 19 inches (48 cm), but typically falls in bouts of 3 inches (8 cm) or less. Spring and fall are mild. Autumn is brief; spring is gradual. Extremes have ranged from −28 °F (−33 °C) on January 16, 1888 to 111 °F (44 °C), as recently as July 19, 1960; temperatures have reached −25 °F (−32 °C) and 110 °F (43 °C) as recently as December 22, 1990 and June 28, 2015, respectively. Precipitation is usually infrequent and light, especially so during the summer months. It averages approximately 11 inches annually.

Running 22 miles in Idaho Falls to save veteran lives
IDAHO FALLS -- It was a chilly 25 degrees at 9 a.m. Wednesday, but that didn't stop Maighen Paskett and Gary Azevedo from running 22 miles, carrying large flags, through the streets of Idaho Falls.
We're going 22 miles to represent the 22 veterans who will take their lives today, Azevedo said as the pair jogged past the EastIdahoNews.com newsroom.
Paskett and Azevedo of Idaho Falls hope they're noticed as they run to raise awareness that suicides among veterans is a problem.

There are organizations out there to help veterans, Paskett said. They're not alone and there are people that want to help them. Their sacrifice for our country was not in vain.
The duo established a Crowdrise fundraising campaign to raise money for national nonprofit Team Red, White and Blue. The organization's mission is to enrich the lives of America’s veterans by connecting them to their community through physical and social activities.
