Jao Tsung-I Academy, Hong Kong Heritage Lodge
Jao Tsung-I Academy, Hong Kong Heritage Lodge
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Another trip to Hong Kong. I tried a new way to get the ferry terminal in Zhongshan and it worked out extremely well. The free bus from the hotel is definitely much better than taxi cabs for the 1 hour trip.
I check into the Hong Kong Heritage Lodge. It’s a very old property on the norther side of Kowloon Bay near the Mei Foo MRT station. The buildings are well over 100 years old and they have been used for a number of things including a customs house for the port, a hospital, a quarantine area, a psychiatric ward, a prison, and now decent hotel. It’s part of the Jao Tsung-I Academy, an institution named after Jao Tsung-I, a well know and influential Hong Kong scholar. There are 3 areas up on a hill. The upper area is where the lodge is, the middle area is the meeting and event spaces as well as a tea house and a restaurant, and the bottom area is the art gallery and academy.
Of all the places I have stayed in Hong Kong, this is the most unique, quietest, oldest, cheapest, and the room is the biggest. It’s not for everyone, but if you’re looking for all of the above, it’s for you.

The Works:Louise Bourgeois and Jao Tsung-I exhibitions & in the studio: emo band Wellsaid
French-American artist Louise Bourgeois, who died on May 31st, 2010. She was born in Paris almost 100 years before. After the First World War, in 1919, the family moved to Choisy-le-Roi to set up a tapestry restoration business. During her childhood, Louise’s father embarked on many affairs, one most significantly with her English governess. Her father’s domination of the household, and her mother’s death in 1932 later came to motivate most of her art.
Her childhood and its psychological effects on her came be major subjects. Her works reflect memories of her father, her mother’s illness, the pressures of childhood, and her own feelings of guilt, abandonment, and anger. The Hauser & Wirth gallery is currently presenting “My Own Voice Wakes Me Up”, the first solo exhibition of her work in Hong Kong, until 11th May.
Jao Tsung-I, who died in February of last year, is known not only for his studies of Chinese culture – he wrote over 900 scholarly articles - but also for his own artistic achievement as a painter and calligrapher. His scholarly works cover 13 genres across the field of Chinese culture, including ancient history, oracle bone inscriptions, and “chuci”, ancient Chinese poetic songs from the southern state of Chu. On show at the University of Hong Kong Museum and Art Gallery, “Searching Through Teaching” showcases his teaching, as well as research materials, books, paintings, and calligraphy collected and produced over his academic career.
The local emo band Wellsaid is an offshoot of math rock band, Emptybottles and the indie-rock label, Sweaty & Cramped. They write their own music, inspired by 1990s indie music, emo and punk. They’re about to release their debut nine-track album “Apart” in several formats, some of them a little bit retro.

My name is Dennis. In 2009, I opened this channel to record or document this city. I know something is being changed in next decade(s), or I felt the change have began since 2003, no later in 2046. I want to, at least, save some kind of city life in video form instead of taken photo or written in words. I strongly believe that motion picture and sound recording are much better way to preserve and present in the future when young generation want to get know of Hong Kong.
In May of 2018, I wrote the following statement in below:
Hi everyone, thank you for supporting me in fulfilling my childhood dream of making videos.
My parents had always taken a tolerant attitude toward my “capricious”: whether my work is feasible and sustainable... and they never complained about it.
As my father just passed away in May, I am left with no choice but to give up my video making venture.
In Hong Kong where the cost of living is sky high, youtube video making is simply not sustainable by google adsense alone. The revenue produced is way too insufficient for affording a domestic helper, and I must look after my mom all by myself - this is why I must stay very close to her at all times.
Unless my revenue is closed to market rate, or my income can cover a domestic helper, otherwise I can hardly justify any video-related works.
Therefore, from now on everything video will be postponed in terms of year(s).
Thank you, and hope to see you all again in the future.
Reason to choose live streaming:
Because I am the only son of my mother in Hong Kong, and I have to take care of her at home. I almost give up this channel because of high consumption of time and living cost. But I found some extra time.
Live streaming will be held anytime from Monday to Saturday 9:00 a.m to 4:00 p.m HKT (GMT +8) at anywhere during my spare time. I live in Fanling, north part of New Territory, so it will include my showtime of traveling back and forth. Because of home care to my old mother, there will be no time beyond above time shown, i.e. NO NIGHT-TIME video. Again, from 9:00 to 16:00 is my bonus time when my mother is staying at the senior daycare center, so before and after that, I will NOT able to do filming.
I understand most of you are looking for high quality of video, e.g. 4K or 8K. But hardware is so important at this post-production, that is, the higher quality video, the higher powerful computer to render video. Financial is my biggest issue, I can't afford to buy an expensive hardware right now. Even previous old 2K recorded video, it wasn't easy at all, one hour video = 1.5 hours of rendering, plus uploading time. How about 1 hour 4K ? = 15 hour up......under this old computer. (please check youtube.com/user/hongkongmap/about )
In order to make it easy for me, live streaming not only save my time but also i can interact with audience, right? But I will continue to make recorded video like before, it maybe situation when signal strength is really poor.
I will continue to run this channel as long as the time is fit-on-me or I don't see any kind of video job could fit me.
I hope this is clear to everyone.

Chinese born Hong Kong scholar, poet, calligrapher and painter, Jao Tsung I Died at 100
Jao Tsung-I was born on 9 August 1917 and died on 6 February 2018. He was a Chinese-born Hong Kong scholar, poet, calligrapher and painter. A versatile scholar, he contributes to every field of humanities, including archaeology, literature, philology, musicology and history. He had two daughters.Born into a wealthy family in Chaozhou of Hakka Mei County, Guangdong ancestry, Jao is largely an autodidact. He began to publish scholarly works at a young age. Later he was invited to work as lecturer and researcher at different colleges in the mainland. He moved to Hong Kong in 1949.
The Works:Tribute to Jao Tsung-i, Lok Ga-chung's handprinted stamps & cellist Alexander Kniazev
It’s St Valentine’s Day, and later in the programme we’ll be featuring a Russian cellist Alexander Kniazev who on Sunday performed a recital with pianist Colleen Lee that featured music with a decidedly Romantic twist, from composers Brahms, Shostakovich and Franck.
First though, and on a sadder note, distinguished scholar Jao Tsung-i died last Tuesday at the age of 100. Born in Guangdong, Jao was known for his erudition in Chinese culture, particularly its ancient history, oracle bone inscriptions and Chu Ci – an anthology of Chinese poetry also known as “Poetry of the South”. He and Ji Xianlin, who died in 2009, have long been considered considered China’s two greatest sinologists. Throughout his life, Jao produced around a thousand scholarly articles, over a hundred books, calligraphy and paintings. He also composed for the guqin. Since coming to Hong Kong in 1949, he taught at the University of Hong Kong, the Chinese University, and other international tertiary institutions. His last major public appearance was at an exhibition in Beijing that featured 126 of his lotus flower paintings, a symbol of his feelings for Hong Kong.
Stamp lover Lok Ka-chung doesn’t just collect stamps. He also likes to paint on the envelopes to which they are stuck. Over the years, he’s painted more than 10,000 such images. His subjects range from the historic to the contemporary, and include major events, architecture, and scenes from everyday Hong Kong life.
In 1999, cellist and organist Alexander Kniazev was named best musician of the year in Russia. That’s just one of many musical plaudits he’s received. He’s also won prizes at numerous international music competitions including the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow and the Cassado Competition in Florence. Other than performing as a soloist with world renowned conductors and in prestigious halls, he also performs with smaller ensembles. At Sha Tin last Sunday, in keeping with Valentine’s Day week, he gave a one-night recital of romantic music by Brahms, Shostakovich and Franck with pianist Colleen Lee.

Achieving a balance in conservation, revitalization and technology, the Academy has given a new life to this large hundred-year-old historical compound. The entire complex has been classified as “Grade III historical building”. After renovation and reinforcement, each building has been redesigned and laid out for its new usage but has retained as much as possible its original structure and style. Starting from 2012, the dozens of buildings located in the High, Middle and Low Zones have been open to the public one after another. In early 2014, the Heritage Lodge officially began to operate. In June 2014, the Academy was formally open. Jao Tsung-I Academy is one of the projects in the first batch of the “Revitalising Historic Buildings Through Partnership Scheme” of the Development Bureau of the HKSAR Government. It is located at the site of the former Lai Chi Kok Hospital. The Hong Kong Institute for the Promotion of Chinese Culture (HKIPCC), a non-governmental organization (NGO), is directly responsible for the restoration, revitalisation and daily operation of the Academy. The Academy is named after Professor Jao Tsung-I, a renowned contemporary scholar of Chinese culture. The Academy sits on a hill in Lai Chi Kok. The cluster of buildings at its present site has served different purposes in the past – as a hospital, a customs station, dwellings for Chinese labourers, a quarantine station, a prison, an infectious diseases hospital and a psychiatric rehabilitation centre. With its unique location and structures, the site has played different roles at different times, responding to the needs of the society in each phase of its development. Now, the compound has been revitalised as a cultural landmark, in response to the current needs for cultural development in our society.

Professor Men Huifeng, Kan Guixiang martial arts achievements Exhibition opening ceremony Dongyue Taijiquan Cultural Center, was held November 28 in Hong Kong, Professor Men Huifeng, Professor Kan Guixiang two Grandmasters personally visited Hong Kong, took the rare opportunity to experience the special arrangements for the exchange of courses, taught by two Tai Chi Taijiquan masters.
With Grandmasters Professor Kan Gui Xiang, Professor Men Hui Feng , Grandmaster Cui Zhong San, Master and Champion Men Gan Hong, Chinese Wushu Association president Gao Xiao Jun, wushu greatest Li Jie, Wang You Tong laoshi, Zhang Qiuping. Also master coach Nikola Maricic from Macau attended the event as a guest. Professor Men Hui Feng, is one of the founders of 24, 48, 42 competition forms, also 32, 42 Sword Forms. Dong Yue Tai Ji Quan (East Mountain Tai Chi Quan) was created by the professor and his wife, Kan Gui Xiang, from their life experiences; learning, practicing and teaching. Professor Men is of the ten top Wushu professors in China, and Vice President of the Chinese National Wushu Association. He's also the author of many martial arts books, which are used in all Chinese Physical Universities. Professor Kan Gui Xiang, is the founder of 42 Sword Form, and 56 Chen Style Tai Ji Quan; both International Competition Forms. In 2000, she was on the cover of an American Tai Chi magazine. They've both trained many champions at world martial arts competitions. They're both renowned in the world of Martial Arts.
Kan, GuiXiang is famous professor on Wu Shu in Beijing Physical Education University. She is also Wu Shu nine Duan in China, which is the highest Wu Shu level in China.. January 1st, 2000, as the first sunray was shining the land of China, Professor Men played Dong Yue Tai Chi on the top of the mountain Tai Shan. Because Tai Shan mountain is called “Dong Yue” by Chinese, the Tai Chi professor Men played then was named Dong Yue Tai Chi Quan following the name of the mountain. At that moment there were about 4 billion people in mire than 40 countries who watched this special program, which simply means that Dong Yue Tai Chi Quan has been facing the whole world since it was just born.
Dong Yue Tai Chi Quan has 15 movements. Although it is simple and easy to learn, it contains all 5 major styles of Tai Chi – Chen, Yang, Wu (1), Wu (2), and Sun, and becomes a brand new and independent style.
Dong Yue Tai Chi emphasizes to combine universe, mountain and human being together becoming a one entity. Once starting movements, the player would stand firmly as the mountain Tai Shan, feel holding sun and moon in his/her arms, make circular movements as much as he/she could. In this way, the player would improve his/her health gradually.
Master Men, GanHong is Master Kan’s daughter. She started to learn Wu Shu since she was only 5 years old. She was awarded the first place in Asia and in China with both Chen-Style and Sun-Style Tai Chi Quan.
