September 7, 1960 - Senator John F. Kennedy's Remarks at the Civic Auditorium, Portland, Oregon
But now they are no longer certain that America's lead will continue in the future when they see the missile gap widen, and once our atomic monopoly begins to cease, and they are uneasy about a military strategy that relies so heavily upon massive retaliation, because they are not interested in seeing their house preserved, only to see it blown up.
Second, the people of the world respect achievement. For most of the 20th century they admired American science and American education, which was second to none. But now they are not at all certain about which way the future lies. The first vehicle in outer space was called sputnik, not Vanguard. The first country to place its national emblem on the moon was the Soviet Union, not the United States. The first canine passengers to outer space who safely returned were named Strelka and Belka, not Rover or Fido, or even Checkers.
They wonder why the Soviet Union has an economic growth of two or three times as much as the great productive country of the United States, and they wonder why it was last year that the United States had the lowest percentage of economic growth increase of any major industrial society in the world. They wonder why Russia is turning out twice as many scientists and engineers as we are, and they are entitled to an answer.
Senator JACKSON. We have time for about one last question on television: Can a Catholic be elected President?
Senator KENNEDY. I must say that with all due respect, it seems to me that that question is worded wrongly. Can an American who happens to be a Catholic be elected President?
I must say that really it seems to me as one - well; there are two basic provisions in the U.S. Constitution. One is the first amendment providing separation of church and state, and the second is article 6, which provides there shall be no religious test for office. As the great struggle today is between those who believe in God and those who do not believe in God, it seems to me we should not divide ourselves in this crucial stage, but instead treat every American according to his desserts and that is make an individual judgment as to his competence to hold any office from serving in the service to President.

LOVE LIFE | Con Bro Chill | TEDxPortland
The atmosphere in the Keller Auditorium was electric, the energy was palpable. It was a Con Bro Chill Super Bowl medley of their greatest party hits. A performance for the ages. The IDEA was simple: LOVE LIFE
On behalf of 55+ Volunteer Team, we consider this performance the greatest singular production experience in the 5 year history of TEDxPortland. 81 moving parts with group, dancers, choir, instruments, stage hands, inputs, lighting props, animation and 11 camera angles.
It’s time to have fun and it’s time to do it together. That is, in essence, what Con
Bro Chill of Portland, Oregon wants you to know. CBC is a party vortex showcasing elements of high-energy pop to create its own brand of neon dance revolution. Their goal is to take over Planet Globes! The statement to every Boom Trooper the world over is clear: the Neon Army is recruiting and CBC has come to celebrate life with you. Let’s party #NeonArmy (Yes, CBC do #hashtags)
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at

The Hip Hop Nutcracker
Portland'5 presents The Hip Hop Nutcracker featuring MC Kurtis Blow at Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall Wednesday, November 15, 2017 at 8pm.
A holiday mash-up for the entire family, The Hip Hop Nutcracker, a contemporary re-imagination of Tchaikovsky’s timeless music, sets out on a third national tour following the success of two previous sold-out tours.
The Hip Hop Nutcracker is an evening-length production performed by a supercharged cast of a dozen all-star dancers, DJ and violinist. Through the spells cast by the mysterious Drosselmeyer, Maria-Clara and her Nutcracker prince, travel back in time to the moment when her parents first meet in a nightclub. Digital scenery transforms E.T.A. Hoffmann’s story of sugarplums into 1980s Brooklyn. The Hip Hop Nutcracker celebrates love, community and the magic of New Year’s Eve.
The Hip Hop Nutcracker is directed and choreographed by Jennifer Weber, artistic director of the Brooklyn based theatrical hip-hop dance company Decadancetheatre. It was adapted to contemporary New York City by Mike Fitelson, executive director of United Palace of Cultural Arts (UPCA) and includes hip-hop interludes remixed and reimagined by DJ Boo as well as an on-stage electric violinist.
The Hip Hop Nutcracker is also part of the 2017-18 Portland'5 Education Program season.

Rolling Stones Concert Ticket 1966 Tour, Never Used - Portland, Oregon
A complete, never-torn Rolling Stones concert ticket from 1966, during their fifth tour of the United States. This particular specimen hails from Portland, Oregon.
It has tape residue from being mounted in a scrapbook and a dark fingerprint from ink in one place, but it’s still a great, fun Rolling Stones collectible from the mid-60s.
Old ticket STUBS are quite common to find, but obviously, locating a whole Rolling Stones concert ticket from the ’60s is a nice coup, because usually they were turned back in for a refund.
This cool piece of vintage Rolling Stones concert memorabilia is shown to you today by me, Pete Howard, a lifelong fan and collector (of all types of music). I can be reached either through pete@postercentral.com or by calling 805 540 0020.
To see a few more vintage sixties rock ’n’ roll concert ticket stubs and full tickets – including the Stones’ very first American show! - just hopalong over to this page on my comprehensive hobby web site:
