Hong Kong's five best day walks - Episode 4 - Lamma Island
Lamma is the biggest of the car free outlying islands, making it perfect for a full day of exploration on foot. My root started at the northern tip and took me through thick jungle to Hung Shing Ye beach where the walk switches to a coastal hike to the fishing village of Sok Kwu Wan. If you are lucky, or unlucky depending on your love for all things wild, you may see a wild boar or python snake. Both are common sightings in Lamma’s outback. No need for a pack lunch on this trip with plenty of restaurants offering great seafood choices. There is a loop in the southern part of the island if you want to spend time at the beach or a walk to the southern trip where a ferry returns you to Hong Kong island.
Take the ferry from Aberdeen promenade to Pak Kok and walk on the path to the north tip of the island. Take a small path to the cable road, which you can follow through the jungle to Hung Shing Ye beach. From the far end of the beach continue south to Sok Kwu Wan and then along the coast to Mo Tat Wan from where you can take a ferry back to Aberdeen.

Nick is what many people call as the original hippie on Hong Kong.
Yes, he's from Hong Kong, but not from the hectic business districts -- he's from an outer island called Lamma Island. It's a completely different world than Hong Kong Island, and it's just a 20 minute ferry ride away. I've been to Hong Kong 8 times, and this is my first time on Lamma and my mind is completely blown!
This is the story of Nick's peaceful life, and why he's never shaved his beard nor left Hong Kong since 1984. What a guy!

Lamma Island, Hong Kong, China
Lamma Island seems to be populated mainly by British business people who work in Hong Kong but who want to raise a family is a less densely populated area. On the Island I saw no cars; a lot of moms, dads, and kids playing; three very sketchy looking people (who were probably left behind after the British-China hand-over and are now stuck there) and a few tourists. It's a great place to escape the madness of Hong Kong City and the 20 minute ferry ride cost about $5 CAD.
【4K】Walk on Lamma Island, Hong Kong | Outlying Island & fishing village
Walking at Lamma Island, a traditional Chinese fishing village to a laid-back multicultural community, Lamma’s blend of Western and Chinese island life creates an atmosphere that has proved irresistible for Hong Kong’s busy residents. Many come here as day-trippers; some stay for good.
How to get there
Take a ferry from Central Pier 4 to Yung Shue Wan (approximately 30 minutes). From the Yung Shue Wan Pier turn right and walk along the Family Trail to the beach for about 30 minutes.

Chinese New Year on Lamma island, Hong Kong
Chinese New Year Celebration on Lamma island! The best I have ever seen! Including crackers, which are not allowed in Hong Kong so the only way to see them is in the villages on the islands like this one or north parts of Hong Kong, or in China. The first one is #keilun dance followed with a cute children #liondance I'm glad I went to the temple at midnight! This brings you back in the time... And the city center with all its skyscrapers is just 25 min by boat... crazy. Happy I live here and not there.
