Military Aviation Museum
Virginia Beach, Virginia
Before heading home to Fairfax, Virginia, I decided check out the Military Aviation Museum located at Virginia Beach Airport in a town called Pungo, which is just southeast of Virginia Beach.
They have a large collection of WWI and WWII aircraft, ranging from the P-51 Mustang to the Messerschmidt Bf 109 and from the Curtiss Jenny to replicas of the Fokker D.VII and Dr.I.
What makes this museum unique is that most of their collection is airworthy. In addition, the museum offers rides in their Boeing Stearman and Waco YMF-5.
If you happen to be in the area, this is definitely one of the top aviation museums worth checking out.
Information about the museum and its facilities can be found here:
Military Aircraft Museum - Corsair In Flight - How Do Airplanes Carry Banners? - Virginia Beach, VA
Peter and Josiah continue to learn about airplanes with a trip to the Military Aircraft Museum in Virginia Beach. This museum is home to one of the world's largest collections of warbirds in flying condition. They explore airplanes from WWI and WWII and get to see a Corsair in flight. After watching the airplanes on the beach that tow banners through the sky, they found it interesting to watch how the planes pick up and drop the banners from the airfield.

Flying Aviation Museum with World War 1 and 2 planes Virginia Beach
The Military Aviation Museum is home to one of the largest private collections of World War I and World War II era military aircraft in the world.
Each has been beautifully restored to its prior military condition, using original parts whenever possible.
Most of the planes are airworthy and flown at the museum during flight demonstrations and at air shows throughout the year.
Its mission is to preserve, restore and fly these historic aircraft and to allow a new generation to experience and learn from what [their forebears] might have endured ... in the skies so very far from home.
Unlike most other collections, which are displayed in a static museum environment, almost all of the historic aircraft at the Museum have been restored to flying condition. In twice-yearly major airshows (one in the spring for World War II planes, and one in the fall for WWI), as well as other special events, the aircraft fly again for the public to view and experience.
The collection also includes a large reference library, along with artifacts and materials to illustrate the historic context of the aircraft in the collection.

Chantilly, Virginia - Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum Annex HD (2016)
The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, also called the Udvar-Hazy Center, is the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum (NASM)'s annex at Washington Dulles International Airport in the Chantilly area of Fairfax County, Virginia, United States.
The 760,000-square-foot (71,000 m2) facility was made possible by a $65 million gift in October 1999 to the Smithsonian Institution by Steven F. Udvar-Házy, an immigrant from Hungary and co-founder of the International Lease Finance Corporation, an aircraft leasing corporation. The main NASM building, located on the National Mall in Washington, D.C, had always contained more artifacts than could be displayed, and most of the collection had been stored, unavailable to visitors, at the Paul E. Garber Preservation, Restoration, and Storage Facility in Silver Hill, Maryland. A substantial addition to the center encompassing restoration, conservation and collection-storage facilities was completed in 2010. Restoration facilities and museum archives were moved from the museum's Garber facility to the new sections of the Udvar-Hazy Center.

Joe's S gauge train of Army tanks circles his Troy Aviation Museum, Greenberg Show, Virginia Beach
The Tidewater Division of the ACSG set up its S Gauge layout at the Greenberg Show in Virginia Beach on February 21 and 22, 2015. Joe brought along his collection of S Scale (1:64) model airplanes. Some of them are die-cast production pieces while the B-17, B-25, P-51, and B-58 are plastic kits. The 2-8-0 Hemlock, Selkirk, and Troy RR locomotive is pulling a string of flatcars with 1:72 scale Sherman tanks, and a DUKW. The flatcars on the other track have half-track trucks and another tank. The hangar is a repainted Plasticville kit. Glen loaned the use of the radar tower and airport tower for the display.

Ely Memorial Park Aviation Museum at Naval Station Norfolk.
Ely Memorial Park is a small plot of land on Naval Station Norfolk that has some retired aircraft on display as well as some memorials for pilots, aircrew and enlisted personnel that have passed away due to aviation mishaps. It was named after Eugene Ely, who in 1910 made history when he successfully launched his Curtiss biplane from the deck of the cruiser Birmingham and landed on the beach of Willoughby Spit. I've always known that this park existed, but never took the time to stop and check it out. I thought it was pretty neat. Had some cool aircraft. It saddened me at the condition of these aircraft. There was bird crap everywhere, flat tires, rust and faded paint. It would be nice to see the base take pride in these Naval masterpieces and make them look good again.
A Walk Through Yanks Air Museum
The same day that I visited the March Field air museum near Los Angeles, I was also able to just barely manage a quick visit to the Yanks Air Museum in Chino, California. I had just visited its neighboring Planes of Fame museum the previous day, and was planning to visit the San Diego Aviation Museum the next day. All this, along with visits to the Petersen Automotive Museum, and Queen Mary ocean liner, were done during my three day planned layover in the Los Angeles area between Parts 1 & 2 of my Train Odyssey 2. Videos of all these attractions are, or will soon be, found here on my YouTube channel.
USS Wisconsin Battleship and Maritime Museum in Norfolk Virginia
We ended up staying in Norfolk Virginia on our way overseas so I rented a car and we went exploring around Norfolk. Nobody else had ever seen a Battleship so I took them to the USS Wisconsin. They have a cool kids area there that we got to play in for a little while and the maritime/Navy museum was pretty neat as well. It was a pretty neat place and the perfect place to go on a rainy and gloomy day. They do have tours that you can go on for a little extra $$ that will take you to the top 3 levels of the ship but none of us wanted to pay the extra bit. Plus, I had seen the USS Missouri when I was stationed in Hawaii. I hope you enjoy the quick video.
