Lloyd Jones & Brown Sugar Blues Band - Vortex I Music Festival (1970)
Vortex I: A Biodegradable Festival of Life, more commonly known as just Vortex I, was a week-long rock festival sponsored by the Portland counterculture community with help from the U.S. state of Oregon, and held in 1970 in Clackamas County near Portland. Held in order to demonstrate the positive side of the anti-War Movement and to prevent violent protests during a planned Richard Nixon appearance in the state. It remains the only state-sponsored rock festival in United States history.
During the war-hot summer of 1970, 35,000 young people began streaming toward Clackamas County's Milo McIver State Park to attend Vortex I, a state-sponsored rock-music festival. Ed Westerdahl, chief of staff to Governor Tom McCall, had selected the 847-acre site, some thirty miles southeast of Portland. The park provided all the advantages that Westerdahl sought—a rural setting, proximity to Portland, and easy driving distance from Interstate 5. The festival was strategically planned to attract young anti-Vietnam war protestors who otherwise might descend on Portland to disrupt the American Legion's annual convention, which would begin on Sunday, August 30.

OMSI Museum Visit
A trip to OMSI: Oregon Museum of Science and Industry
***********************************************************************
In this video, we travel from Seattle to Portland, with a pit stop at Mt. Saint Helen. At the park at the volcano, we did a little tour, took a short hike (no dogs!), and ate lunch in their big parking lot. Plenty of room for a big rig up there, and not a bad drive either. If in the area, check it out!
After the detour, we headed on to Portland, where we pulled into Jantzen RV Resort, which wasn’t much of a resort, and not that great of an RV park. It was so great that we pulled out the next day and headed to a Lowes parking lot while we headed downtown to visit the museum, via Uber. The museum, the OMSI, was pretty neat but much more geared towards kids.
It did, however, have a submarine on display, which was a pretty good tour. The tour guide put out a lot of information, and it makes you appreciate those that choose to serve on them!
After our day out, we collected our home and headed to Milo McIver State Park, where we stayed for a couple days – actually, till they closed for the season. It’s a nice park about 30 minutes from Portland, so if you’re looking for a “camping” experience while in Portland, head on over there. It has a ton of equestrian trails, which make great walking trails if you watch for “apples”.

2010 Beaver State Fling Disc Golf Finals
In Estacada, Oregon, the Men's and Women's Open titles all came down to the final hole of the final round of the 2010 Beaver State Fling PDGA National Tour event.
Liz Carr found herself suddenly in the lead just one hole after carding a six on hole 16 of the challenging East Course at Milo McIver State Park. And she responded with solid par-3s on holes 17 and 18 to bring home her second 2010 PDGA National Title crown, besting the emerging Texas phenom, Paige Pierce by a throw.
Christian Dietrich too found himself in unexpected territory with the lead going into the final round of the BSF. And while he was severely challenged by the likes of Nikko Locastro (who actually tied Dietrich on Hole 15), Nate Doss, and Bradley Williams, Dietrich had just enough in the tank to outlast his rivals.
Check out the beautiful scenery, great disc golf shots, and interviews with the winners during this nearly 10 minute recap from one of disc golf's best events--The Beaver State Fling.
Oregon Vortex and the American Legion MIA 03449 1 of 2
In August 1970, the American Legion held its national convention in Portland. a federally chartered organization formed after World War I, the Legion serves as an advocate for veterans, most notably through the the GI Bill and the Veterans Administration. It also, in part, advocates a political ideology known as Americanism—notably outing Communists to HUAC during the Cold War. Such positions made the American Legion a target of anti-war protestors during the Vietnam War, many of whom believed that the Legion was too supportive of President Nixon’s foreign policy.
When the American Legion announced that Nixon would be speaking at the Portland convention, anti-war groups came together in what was called the People’s Army Jamboree. The group and called for a massive protest, and organizers informed City Hall that tens of thousands of young people soon would be poring into the city. Mayor Terry Schrunk, certain that the National Guard would be needed to control the situation, worked with Gov. Tom McCall’s office to plan for the protest and held public meetings to discuss where to accommodate all the protestors who would need camping and gathering spaces.
An anti-war group called The Family spoke at the meetings and met with city officials to ask for access to Washington Park in southwest Portland as a gathering place. There was much resistance by city leaders, and McCall’s office worked with The Family to come up with a plan to attract the protestors out of the city to Milo McIver Park to attend a free Woodstock-like rock concert funded by the state and private businesses. Vortex I: A Biodegradable Festival of Life was Oregon’s way to keep Portland calm during a politically tense time.
Nixon canceled his appearance at the convention, which took some pressure off the city, but business owners still boarded up windows and residents sent letters to the mayor and governor condemning their accommodation of the protestors. The Jamboree still marched through the city, with amused Legionnaires from all fifty-four chapters looking on, and then caravaned to the Vortex festival and concert. The Legion held its own parade through Portland, invited McCall to speak (as a member of the Oregon chapter), and welcomed Vice President Spiro Agnew to the stage in Nixon’s place. To the governor, the week was a complete success.
The events were heavily covered by the news media, and the Oregon Historical Society holds video footage shot by KOIN. Below is a guide to the clips filmed by reporters for broadcast; the audio fades out whenever a reporter speaks over the footage (the reporters’ voices are not included), but most of the film contains audio.
The film begins with scenes of Portland prepared for the American Legion convention.
00:58 Tom McCall gives a speech to the Legionnaires; the governor supported Nixon and the Vietnam War.

6:38 Footage of the convention.

18:05 McCall meets with the National Guard near the Vortex site (audio is suppressed).
19:48 A KOIN reporter interviews people attending the rock festival and later talks with locals about the event.
