PUBLIC LECTURE: Yes, Humans Cause Earthquakes
Justin Rubenstein, USGS, IRIS/SSA Distinguished Lecturer series, June 2, 2016 . OMSI Science Pub at the McMenamin's Mission Theater, Portland OR.
ABSTRACT: The central United States is experiencing an unprecedented surge in earthquakes that began in 2009, rising from an average of 21 magnitude 3 and larger quakes to over 650 in 2014 alone. This increased earthquake activity is found in just a few concentrated regions around the country, with the lion’s share in Oklahoma. In 2014 there were more magnitude 3 and larger earthquakes in Oklahoma than there were in California. The increased earthquake activity is limited to areas of new and emerging oil and gas production and is undoubtedly caused by some of the techniques they use.

Slabtown Festival 2010
Over the past three years, support of the Slabtown Community Festival has been tremendous. The neighborhood came together, participating as volunteers, merchants and festival-goers. For the 4th Annual event, we're expanding to TWO DAYS! That's right, we've partnered with Musicfest NW and will stage some great musical acts from that popular festival at our NW 23rd & Savier site both Friday and Saturday nights from 6-10pm. Saturday afternoon, we'll again celebrate the people, art and history of neighborhood with all kinds of family fun and activities, as in previous years. Planning is underway and the dates are set for Friday and Saturday, September 10-11, 2010.
We are confident that businesses within the community will again get involved en masse, and at a level that fits their particular situation. Opportunities are greater than ever to participate in and profit from the vastly increased crowds that are anticipated to attend (see attachments). Be a Slabtown sponsor and host a booth. Make an in-kind donation or volunteer your employees to help out at the festival. We need your creativity and support!
This year's historic theme for the Saturday afternoon component of the Festival will be the art and, in particular, musical heritage of Northwest Portland, which will be commemorated through exhibits and live performances. The overall focus of this family-oriented festival is to cultivate a greater sense of community by introducing Slabtown's new arrivals with longtime residents, connecting the neighborhood's current vitality with its remarkable past, and gathering the young and old, and business owner to business owner. Festival offerings, such as a rock climbing wall, face-painting, merchant and vendor booths, Slabtown history exhibits, a beer garden and live music and theater will appeal to all ages. Proceeds from the festival will fund Slabtown history programs and projects, and Friendly House.
So what the heck is Slabtown, anyway?
Slabtown gets its name from the enormous quantities of slab wood—the rounded, exterior parts of a log cut away to square off lumber--that were produced as a popular form of heating fuel in the early 1900s by lumber mills of the neighborhood. Slabtown has been a cohesive residential community, distinguished by a mixed ethnic component, since the 1850s. It encompasses the area roughly from NW 16th Avenue to Montgomery Park and from the Willamette River to NW Pettygrove. Landmarks of old Slabtown include the site of the 1905 World's Fair, St. Patrick's Church, the ESCO steel foundry, Chapman School, and the Vaughn Street Baseball Park, home of Portland's Pacific Coast League club, the Beavers until 1955.
Roots of the Festival
Friends and fellow Slabtown history enthusiasts, Mike Ryerson (NW Examiner) and Tim Hills (McMenamins Pubs), organized a gathering in January 2006 for a number of the old, Croatian residents of Slabtown, most of whom shared ties to St. Patrick's Church and the Vaughn Street Baseball Park. The gathering coincided with the visit of one of Slabtown's most famous sons, Johnny Pesky, the Boston Red Sox Hall of Famer. The gathering proved to be such a special event that Ryerson and Hills vowed to greatly expand the idea. One result was the organization of public tours led by Ryerson and Hills along the NW 23rd corridor, emphasizing the neighborhood's rich history. Further inspired by the popularity of the tours, the two men initiated plans for an all-inclusive community celebration of Slabtown's heritage and present-day vitality.
As the festival has continued to grow, Mike and Tim launched another project to help celebrate and make better known the neighborhood history. Called Slabtown Picture Shows, it is an informal lecture and slide show of the heritage and evolution of NW 23rd Avenue. The program proved quite popular and has been presented several times at the Mission Theater, The Oregon Jewish Museum and the Northwest branch library.

The Movement is an American band originally formed in Columbia, South Carolina, in 2004. The two founding members, Josh Swain and Jordan Miller, then relocated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where they acquired a live rhythm section in the form of local Philadelphia musicians Jay Schmidt and Gary Jackson. Jorden left the band in 2012 leading to a temporary hiatius until Josh took over as frontman later that year. Their music is commonly described as a fusion of rock, reggae, hip hop and acoustic.

Moustache Pageants Are Real - At Least in Maine They Are
HISTORY OF THE STACHE PAG
So what is the Stache Pag anyway? Well, for one thing, Stache Pag is short for Moustache Pageant, so the g is soft.
Other than that, it is, loosely, one hell of a party... that celebrates creative facial hair. The emphasis here has been on the word loose. Have a look at some of the photos from Pag's of years past (2008, 2009, 2010), or the photos on our facebook group, the popularity of which is growing at an alarming rate.
Here is some history: we started this event in 2008 on a whim. We took hold of the notion of March Madness, and incorporated the moustache--March Moustache Madness. Then, we thought (this is us thinking now, but I use quotes to note our precise thoughts):
Stachetag: Man, wouldn't it be friggin' awesome to have a moustache competition here in Portland.
Bean Sprouts: Yes, it would. A moustache pageant, if you will.
Stachetag: Yes, I will. A Stache Pag!
Together: HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
So these telepathic musings led to actually talking about the event. A principal notion of the event was to spread the stache love around between many local venues. Year one we picked on the Flask Lounge. Packed the place, 35 contestants, couldn't walk without spilling your drink. No nudity, though.
Year two it was Novare Res. Loudest place I think I've ever been (except for the grand re-opening of the State Theater with My Morning Jacket... that actually hurt). Christ, I had to leave due to the ringing in my ears. 44 contestants. Again, you could NOT move in that place. I wouldn't be shocked to hear it hasn't been that full since. Still, no nudity.
Year three, we knew we had to step it up. To the Empire Dine and Dance we took the show, and what a show it was! 66 contestants, 314 paid spectators, holy shitballs! The Green Room was hopping, the yeast-flavored soda was flowing, and the crowd was intense. Fully. We hired a camera crew, we sold t-shirts, we gave the contestants their own row. There was blood (that guy got kicked out), sweat (everywhere!) and tears (dude, it's cool, I thought you should have won too, but you could be this year's winner!). But still, most clothes remained in tact.
In 2011, we took over Portland's newest favorite bar: Bayside Bowl. What's great about Bayside is that many of the bartenders and staff already have a rich history of being stachetastic in their own way. To learn more about that, go to Bayside Bowl, pull up a pint, and engage one of these fine gentleman and ask them about their relationship with the moustache.
Last year, in 2012, agreeing with Stache groupies united (a nonprofit yet to be formed?), we needed a bigger venue, so we shot for the heart of the arts district in Portland: Port City Music Hall. We initiated VIP entry, incorporated a film festival, added a full-on catwalk, and hooked DJ Tim D up to PCMH's state-of-the-art sound system. The result? Nearly 500 tickets sold (about 65 percent of those to women), and the place was veritable moustache petting zoo... with beer.
In 2013, we make a triumphant return to PCMH to sell that place out. With the help of Creative Content Partners on the event planning, we're not so sure what this year's Pag will bring, but this moustache train is picking up speed. Care to come along for the ride?

***IMPORTANT INFO ABOUT THIS VIDEO AT BOTTOM OF PAGE***
The Process of Hydraulic Fracturing and Wastewater Pumping Operations (aka: FRACKING) in parts of the Midwest USA is being observed to have indeed caused or INDUCED and INCREASED seismic activity in a region that without such Human activity would NOT have otherwise experienced these Man-made, potentially CATASTROPHIC events.
It is my firm belief that these activities should immediately be curtailed or even halted until it is THOROUGHLY researched in an effort to mitigate the likelihood of CAUSING a major CALAMITY. This part of the country lies within an area called the New Madrid Fault. The populated areas within the region are NOT accustomed to or designed to withstand frequent, intensifying, and increasing large seismic events. The infrastructure regions such as California or Japan that are prone to earthquakes has been significantly adapted to withstand these events whereas the Midwest IS NOT.
PLEASE do your own research.

Recorded live from United States, Oregon, Portland on my iPhone on 7/10/15 at 9:56 PM PDT - Captured Live on Ustream at
Citizen Engagement in America’s History
Join us for a cross-generational and bipartisan discussion about how citizen movements have influenced – or failed to influence – policymakers. From Civil Rights marches to student activism in the social media age, citizen activists will join a panel with former members of Congress who will discuss how in their careers on Capitol Hill citizens changed their thinking on specific topics. The conversation will focus civic engagement, civic education, and how to petition the government. Moderated by Former Member of Congress Jane Harman (D-CA), panelists include D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton; Sarah Lerner, teacher of English and Journalism at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, with student Rain Valladares; Former Member of Congress Phil Gingrey (R-GA); and Marjorie Dannenfelser, President of the Susan B. Anthony List.
