The Murray by Foster + Partners
The Murray is a luxury 336-room hotel located on the southern edge of Central with panoramic views of The Peak and the gardens to the south in Hong Kong, China. One of the central aims of the project is to reconnect the building with the city at ground level, creating a new street frontage on Garden Road, transparent and welcoming ground floor spaces, and enhancing and extending the landscaped grounds to incorporate a public tai chi area.
At the tower’s base is a sequence of four-storey high arches intersected by a podium, and a vehicle ramp, which is a distinctive feature of the original building. A large Old and Valuable tree, which rises up through a void in the parking slab of the podium has been liberated and conserved as the centrepiece of the arrivals equence for guests. The architecture of the original building is in direct response to the climate of Hong Kong – the windows are recessed and carefully orientated to avoid the harsh tropical sunlight.
The new design retains the façade while upgrading other aspects of the building and extending the life of the building by introducing a new function appropriate for changing demands of the city – giving it a sustainable legacy for years to come. The tower is characterised by the distinctive pattern of its white façade, which is made up of a grid of square windows. In a fusion of interior and exterior, the inset bays provide a modular unit and organising principle for the hotel rooms, allowing for a variety of planning options. Source by Foster + Partners. Добираться сюда лучше с автобусного терминала в районе Central (Exchange Square Bus Terminus, смотри карту в конце). Выбирайте маршрут номер 6 или 66, эти автобусы идут по очень красивому серпантину через перевал, занимайте места на втором этаже автобуса (лучше по правой стороне) и наслаждайтесь видами. Маршруты 6Х, 6А и 260 идут через тоннель, так короче, но менее интересно. У автобуса № 66 конечная будет Stanley Plaza, здесь вы спуститесь и попадёте сразу на набережную, если именно отсюда планируете начало прогулки по Стэнли, то через нее ещё проходят маршруты № 6 и № 6Х. А мы доехали до остановки Stanley Village(так же делают и большинство туристов), отсюда легко попасть как на главный пляж, так и на набережную. Если хотите, можете добраться на автобусах 260, 6Х или 6 до их конечной – тюрьмы Stanley Prison, здесь есть тематический Музей Исправительной Службы Гонконга.
Рядом с Blake Pier стоит весьма любопытное здание, которое полностью «приехало» сюда из центрального района Гонконга, это Murray House (Мюррэй хаус, дом Мюррея) и сейчас в нём дорогие рестораны и несколько магазинов. Его построили аж в 1844 году, и оно было частью квартала для военных (вроде бы офицерской столовой…). Когда на его месте запланировали соорудить небоскрёб Bank of China Tower, то Murray House решено было перенести, так как сносить историческое здание власти не имели права (почувствуйте разницу, у нас наверняка бы на это никто не обратил внимания и здание осталось бы только на старых фотографиях). Его разобрали на много-много (около 4000) фрагментов, нанесли маркировку и целых семь лет держали на хранении, подыскивая подходящее место для новой установки.
Когда с местом определились, то выяснилось, что за это время часть маркировки стёрлась, то есть стало непонятно, какая деталь откуда. Три с половиной года строители решали эту головоломку, и наконец-то справились!!! Ну, почти справились… Оказалось, что остались лишними целых шесть больших колонн, которые в итоге просто установили перед зданием. Я очень обрадовался этой истории, так как лично у меня часто после разбора чего-нибудь и последующей сборки, остаются какие-то лишние мелкие детали. А тут – колонны! То есть, я не самый безнадёжный в этом плане человек, что очень приятно!

A 1997 interview with Lord Murray MacLehose who was Hong Kong's 25th Governor.
He served from 1971-1982. He talks about his time as Governor and reflects on Hong Kong's past and future with the British colony's reverting back to Chinese sovereignty on July 1, 1997. Lord MacLehose was born on October 16, 1917 and passed away on May 27th 2000 at the age of 82.
