Oregon Maritime Museum Highlights in Portland Danny Hauger Travel Podcasts
Danny Hauger Travel podcasts steps aboard the sternwheeler Portland, the last operating steam-powered sternwheel tug in the United States. One look at the big wheel, and you will find yourself propelled to explore! I was, and Dave was a terrific docent for my journey. I was blown away by the extensive remodel of this vessel carried mainly by volunteer labor, the Portland community, and sponsors around the area. Seeing the support and love that this tug has received is quite moving. Enjoy some photos from my trip, and plan your next visit today.

OTBTV with Alex Ansary #316 - A Brief History of 19th Century Shanghaiing in Portland, Oregon
Portland has a part of history that is now becoming more known now than ever. There were days when this town was especially dangerous to wander through (esp. intoxicated) and while being a transient. In the late 1800s, several 'crimps' in old Portland duped witless sailors, loggers, drunks (and others) into signing themselves into indentured servitude with their compliance or without it. This is the story of the things men and women did to other men and women for profit in this town of Portland, Oregon.
Recorded on July 19th, 2014.
Wreck of the Portland - Discovery
Over a decade before great ships like the Titanic were cruising the Atlantic, side-wheel steamers like the Portland were the pride of their respective fleets. The ships had a reliability advantage over sailing vessels and were the state-of-the-art luxury transportation of the time. On Thanksgiving weekend in November of 1898, the steamer Portland with 192 aboard, left Boston Harbor headed for Portland, Maine... but ran straight into a monstrous storm moving up the coast. The steamers were extremely unstable in high seas and the Portland was never seen again until its wreck was first located in 1989 and then, an expedition in 2002, using remotely operated vehicles, confirmed that it was indeed the Portland. Working with the Discovery Channel and David Clark Productions, Home Run Pictures produced 90 seconds of animation visualizing what scientist believe may have been the fate of the Portland. The steamer's long, narrow shape and shallow draft probably caused its crew to loose control in the rough seas... so they could not keep the steamer's bow pointing into the oncoming waves. Imagery of the wreck shows the top deck was ripped off... possibly by a rogue wave.

Aloha Surplus : near Portland Oregon
As some of you know I am in Portland Oregon for my Uncle's funeral. He was a United States Marine and all of the military veterans in our family are attending in uniform.
Portland only has a couple surplus stores in the area and we found that Aloha Surplus in Aloha Oregon had the absolute best selection of ribbons, medals and pins for all branches of the service.
Uniform patches are hard to find still, especially Navy ones but these guys are the go to place for ribbons and all the little insignias that go along with them as well.
My cousin and I both have 11 ribbons and they had every single one on hand which saved us time and money since its expensive to expedite shipping.
If you need uniform supplies or you just want to visit a cool surplus store, you have to stop by Aloha Surplus if you are ever in the Portland Oregon area.
Tell them Mixflip sent ya!

Portland Area Day Tour - Springwater Loop, I-205 Corridor, Marine Dr Trail
Long boring video :-) The Springwater Corridor is part of a 40-mile loop in northern Oregon. I switch partway along it to head north along the I-205 corridor path that runs from Oregon City to Vancouver Washington. Just before I get to Washington State, I switched to the Marine Dr trail along the Columbia River, heading back to Portland.
