Exploring Hong Kong | The Temple Street Night Market
CHINESE ART BOOK
BUY HERE:-
The unprecedented and often provocative juxtapositions of the 300 works represented here echo the complexity, diversity, richness and modernity of Chinese art. For more than four millennia, dynasties rose and fell, and the influxes of foreign populations contributed to the changing face of Chinese civilisation and the creation of some of the world's most beautiful art. Here are ancient bronzes and jades, ceramics, ivory-coloured porcelains, court artists who explored new types of landscape compositions and brushwork styles using ink play, 'writing ideas' and literati painters who frequently inscribed their paintings with poems or personal commentaries. Four in particular were Wu Zhen (page 293), Huang Gongwan (page 258), Ni Zan (page 199) and Wang Meng (page 168) with his views of streams and mountains on hand scrolled ink and colour on silk hangings. A gilded bronze of the Buddha from the 3rd century AD from Western Jin sits opposite an oil painting from 1976 where a group of Tibetans gather in a cornfield listening to the radio that is broadcasting the news of Chairman Mao's death. On the far right a man stands with his clenched fist a short distance from his dagger, suggesting suppressed violence towards the regime. A large red harvester serves as a reminder of the Communist Party's presence and political control. There is a superb infusion of humanism into this realist oil painting. Every form of Chinese visual art is featured - painting, calligraphy, sculpture, ceramics, figurines, jades, bronzes, gold and silver, photography, video, installation and performance art produced in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and the West. The Introduction offers a learned summary of Chinese political and cultural history and a comprehensive glossary defines technical terms. An illustrated timeline places each of the 300 works in its chronological sequence in a book full of surprises with this unique arrangement by pairing works that speak to one another in unexpected historical, stylistic and cultural ways. A visually exciting Phaidon art publication of the highest quality, first time discounted. 350 very large glossy pages. 10 x 11½.
Taiwan's 24 Hour Bookstore A Huge Success - Nov 25, 2014
Late nights are common for people in Taipei, and a 24-hour bookstore is taking advantage of the hustle and bustle. While many party animals are hitting up the nightclubs, the Eslite bookstore in central Taipei attracts more visitors than most western bookstores do in daytime hours. The store creates an experience for their customers, combining literature with design, fashion and home styling, small cafes and restaurants. The five-storey store reported revenue of around $425 million in 2013, which should only increase whilst many US and UK bookstores have or are in the midst of closing down. The Eslite chain runs 42 stores in Taiwan and one in Hong Kong.

When Britain handed Hong Kong back to China in 1997, Chinese leaders agreed that Hong Kong would be able to keep its economic and political systems, including some of the civil freedoms denied to China’s citizens on the mainland, for the next 50 years.
Although Hong Kong still has nearly 30 years of semi-autonomy left, China has started tightening its grip, and many believe it is chipping away at Hong Kong’s freedoms. In this episode, I explore how Hong Kong is dealing with the looming deadline and China’s premature moves.

China bookseller rendition: Hong Kong student activist Agnes Chow posts protest video - TomoNews
HONG KONG — Hong Kong student activist Agnes Chow, a member of student organization Scholarism, posted a video on her Facebook page to raise awareness of the mysterious disappearance of Hong Kong bookseller Lee Bo, who went missing on December 30.
I hope that more and more foreign media can keep their attention and coverage on this white terror incident. We feel that Hong Kong is not Hong Kong anymore, it is NAMED as Hong Kong only. The most worrying thing finally happened, Chow says in her Facebook video.
Chow's message has been shared more than 12,000 times on Facebook and gained more than 21,000 likes. Many netizens have expressed their support. The case also sparked a protest in the city on Sunday, where many pro-democracy demonstrators demanded a thorough investigation into the disappearance of the booksellers.
Lee Bo, a major shareholder of Causeway Bay Books, went missing after he went to collect some books at a warehouse in Chai Wan on Hong Kong Island. According to South China Morning Post, Lee's wife claims that his husband called her on the night of his disappearance from Shenzhen, a mainland Chinese city just across the border from Hong Kong. She said he told her he was assisting an investigation and would not return anytime soon.
Hong Kong's Immigration Department has no record of Lee leaving the territory and his Home Return Permit — the entry permit to mainland China for Hong Kong residents — was left at home. Hong Kong Democratic Party politician Albert Ho told the BBC he has strong reason to believe Lee he was taken from Hong Kong and smuggled across the border to China.
The case made a surprising turn after the Central News Agency published a handwritten letter allegedly written by Lee Bo last night, which was faxed to his colleague at the bookstore that claims he needs to handle an issue that cannot be known by outsiders. The letter claims Lee returned to the mainland China in his own way. Consequently, Lee's wife withdrew her request for police help.
Lee is the fifth person linked to the bookstore that has gone missing. According to the BBC, two employees were last seen in Shenzhen, one was last seen in Hong Kong and the owner of the publishing house linked to the bookstore was last heard from Pattaya, Thailand.
