Red Wing Shoes Factory visit
About two years ago Red Wing Shoes Amsterdam was invited to Red Wing, Minnesota to pay a visit to the Red Wing Shoe factory and tannery. Our mission: to discover first hand the deepest secrets of the American, old school production process. The factory is home to a hospitable team of employees, most of whom have worked at the Red Wing factory for nearly 30 years. All the craftsmen and -women ply their own particular craft on the old machinery. Some of the Red Wing machines were patented in 1893 and have, to this very day, not been replaced.
The S.B. Foot tannery is older than the Red Wing Shoes factory itself. The brand bought the tannery in the 1980s to control nearly the entire production process of the shoes . Almost all the machines are sourced from Italy because that is where the best equipment for this purpose comes from. Most of these have been altered so they can process the thick leather that's used for work boots. After sorting and shaving, the leather is colored, dyed, oiled, waxed, dried and finished to the exact requirements of a specific type of leather shoe.
It was not just the mechanical supremacy that was a sight to behold. The human elements involved, such as the workers' loyalty, craftsmanship and the pride they take in their work was something we had not witnessed before. This combination was truly inspiring and for us really defined 'Minnesota Nice'.

New Balance M997 x Red Wing (Unboxing/Detailed Review)
Red Wing boots and New Balance 997s are two Americana style favorites, so now the Minnesota-based boot brand has joined forces with the Massachusetts-stationed sneaker company for a finely-crafted take on the beloved sneaker. The 997 is certainly no stranger to premium materials, and here it’s dressed up in supple tan suede, with material contrast provided by buttery light brown leather on the tongue. Red Wing is known for their signature burgundy/maroon hues as well, so those sultry-yet-sturdy shades appear on both the heel clip and outsole. A perfect pair of shoes to wear with a beefy flannel and some stiff made-in-the-USA selvedge denim, you can expect these collaborative kicks to release on September 6th at the retailers listed below for $300 USD. New Balance has worked with Red Wing Shoes on a luxe iteration of the heritage M997 model that sports a premium upper made from the shoe brand’s signature leather and suede. This 997 follows on from the recently released Made in U.S. pair that featured a premium dark brown leather upper. Here, Red Wing leather has been used in place of New Balance’s standard mix of materials and offers a luxurious take on the 997, delivered in a tonal palette of browns, creams and red — the latter color being a subtle nod to the Red Wing partnership. Buttery soft suede has been used on the majority of the sneaker’s upper, using a slightly heavier cut for the mid-panel and “N” emblem in comparison to the smoother toe box and heel sections. Leather had been used on more detailed sections such as the eyestay and heel support, as well as for the tongue, which features New Balance branding and the “MADE IN USA” stamp. Tan leather lining, a red heel counter, branding on the heel tab and Red Wing-branded insoles round off the premium 997’s design, while an off-white midsole and red-hued gum outsole contrast the upper.
Late last month, New Balance and Red Wing Shoes came together for a luxe brown spin on the classic M997 silhouette (the “M” is for Made in USA). Now, we’re providing a striking closer look at the forthcoming collaboration. Notably, the Red Wing Shoes x New Balance M997RW features high-end soft suede for the majority of the shoe’s upper region, with a slightly firmer cut for the mid-panel and “N” emblem in contrast to the slicker toe box and heel sections. “Tan leather lining, a red heel counter, branding on the heel tab and Red Wing-branded insoles round off” the design of this latest luxury interpretation of the M997, “while an off-white midsole” and red-toned gum outsole dominate the lower region. Throughout the shoe, premium Red Wing leather is used to give the shoe a stunning, well-constructed blend of heritage, street and dressier styling. Altogether, the shoe’s designers aimed for a “tonal palette” of brown, cream and red coloring to bring this new M997 to life. You can take a closer look at the Red Wing Shoes x New Balance M997RW collaboration above. There are two brands considered staples of Americana style: Minnesota bootmakers Red Wing Shoes, and Massachussets athletic company New Balance. Founded just a year apart, both entities have operated independently of one another for over 110 years – until now. Collaborating on the 997 silhouette, this colourway epitomises the durable, American-made ethos that both brands bring to their products. As such, the uppers are built from what looks like roughout leather from Red Wing’s S.B. Foot Tanning Co., with smooth leather accents on the tongue and top eyestay. Brick red rubber outsoles and co-branded insoles complete this colab. The melding of worlds between sneakers and leather boots is a rare occurrence, with many releases falling under that category flying far below the radar of most sneaker outlets. However, the latest of these special releases is something different, as it includes two of the oldest and most well-known footwear brands in the United States: New Balance and Red Wing.

I'm joined today by Mallery Dosdall, Demand Planning Manager with Red Wing Shoe Company. Mallery, welcome to the program.
Thank you for having me.
Tell me a little bit about Red Wing.
Red Wing Shoe Company was founded in 1905. We just celebrated our 110th-year anniversary. Big deal in our small, little town of 15,000 people. We've been manufacturing footwear for that entire time. We have multiple brands. We manufacture Red Wing; Works; Irish Setter, so if you're a hunter you may know that brand; the Vasque footwear, more outdoor trail running, hiking; and then we have a heritage line which is more fashion-forward, premium USA-made product. About 10 years ago, we got into the workwear, protective personal equipment industry. Selling flame-retardant or fire-resistant coveralls and shirts to protect the oil and gas workers. So we offer a head-to-toe solution. We're sold in the United States as well as internationally. Very vertically-integrated, which makes Red Wing Shoe Company a unique place to work, being that we own and run a tannery in Red Wing, Minnesota. We manufacture our own shoes in Red Wing, Minnesota, as well as Potosi, Missouri. And we have company-owned retail stores located throughout the US.
Now, technology has got to be an enabler for you in meeting some of these challenges. Talk about how you've done that and specifically in the case of Logility. What were you looking for in that particular solution that would be relevant to the issues that you raised?
So we were looking for a solution that wasn't just going to solve our needs today, but really something that could bring us to 2020. So everything we're doing right now is vision 2020. How are we going to get from today to then? When we decided on Logility about five years ago, it offered the solution of real-time data at your fingertips. We were used to running on spreadsheets and seeing information once a month and that was it. Making decisions literally within one day. We now can modify and tweak and massage the data using parameters for forecasting. We have ABC analysis that we've implemented with our inventory optimization. So we don't carry the same stock on every single SKU in our portfolio. It's more tiered, which is logical and makes more sense. Let's be right on the right product. Also, since we were getting into that workwear, we needed something that we could adapt and mold and modify, if needed. And Logility offered that solution for us.
Where is your inventory? What's your distribution network look like?
So we have distribution around the globe. We have two warehouses in the United States. A distribution center in the Middle East. One in Europe, one in Japan. And then we have acquired a company in Scotland, about two years ago, to support our oil and gas industry.
What do you expect to be spending most of your time on in the years ahead? What's on your plate for future application, future solutions, future challenges, for that matter?
Logility upgrades are definitely on top of line. You know, getting things more web-based and just hearing kind of the new technology that they're working on. IBP being a key big player. Our executive team is very involved in our current tie up process and [intrigued?] with what Logility has to offer with the IBP platform.
Integrated Business Planning?
Correct. Yes.
Okay. Just wanted to make sure we got our acronyms right.
Yep, yep. We're on the same page. So there's that. And then just wowing our customer. So it's doing the small things behind the scenes to improve the service to our customers. Because at the end of the day, it's all about what's best for our customer and our consumer.
Well, here's to another hundred years. Mallery, thank you so much for being with us, telling us the story of Red Wing Shoe Company.
Thanks.
Thank you for having me.

Red Wing Iron Ranger 8111 Motorcycle Boots Product Review

Join us on Facebook:
When I look for a pair of lifestyle motorcycle boots I have three criteria:
1. Must Be Hard-Wearing They’ve got to be able to go through the paces. Sometimes they get dragged around a corner, caught out in the rain, or something like that, so they need to be able to put up with a little bit of abuse.
2. Must Offer Some Sort of Protection They’re not going to be as protective as a purpose built motorcycle boot, but we want some sort of protection and clearly the benefit is that we can wear these when we’re off the bike as well as when we’re out on it. So we want something that’s going to cover our ankle a little bit.
3. Must Be Stylish They need to be something that you could wear with a pair of jeans when you go out and they won’t look out of place if you walk into a pub or a café.
Those are the criteria I use when choosing a boot.
Red Wing is an American company based in Minnesota, in the Northern United States, which is practically in Canada. They’ve been around for donkey’s years – I think they began in 1905 – and they make primarily work-wear boots. So they are things that are built with a purpose. They are clearly hard-wearing. They are built for miners and loggers and those type of folks who are really going to put them through their paces.
Today we’re looking at the Iron Ranger which is part of the Heritage Collection. We can see that these are made with nice cow hide leather and treated with oil. They have a six inch rise on the side so you’ll have your ankles covered. The heel is made from a cork nitrate which is essentially layers of cork infused with nitrate to keep it really strong. They have a few different features:
They are triple stitched – I don’t know about you, but I’ve had a few pair of boots where the seams have split, particularly on the toe, and that’s not something that a cobbler can repair.
They have a second layer of leather – for added protection on your toes. And they are actually quadruple stitched across the toe.
The great thing about these boots is that like denim, they are going to wear over time and develop different patterns, and fades, and creases. I’ve had a pair for a couple of years now and you can see the difference between the new pair and my old pair. Admittedly, I don’t take care of my stuff as well as I probably should; mine could use a good cleaning, oiling, and a little bit of a polish. But what’s noticeable, is that they are still in the same piece as when I bought them. They’ve got some nice fade patterns in them, some good creases, and the leather has softened up quite a bit.
One of the things that Red Wing even admits to is that their boots aren’t the most comfortable things to wear when you first get them. It’s really hard, tough leather and it needs a little bit of time to break in. My only complaint about these bad boys is that if I walk around town for a day, they become a little bit uncomfortable on my feet. But let’s face it, these are not made as walking boots, they are made to work in and they are great for riding a motorcycle. Last summer I rode a bike 1500 miles from Austin, TX to San Diego, CA and they did the job just perfectly. What’s great again, is that they are hard-wearing. You’ll notice on mine that the toe angle is a little different – looks like I might have dragged my toe a little when I was turning corners on my bike, but not so much on the left boot, which means I’m a little more confident in my right-hand turns.
The Iron Rangers come in a couple of different colors. I think 8111-8116 are the style numbers and based on the number, you’ll get a different color. We borrowed this pair from our friends at Son of a Stag which is a shop on Brick Lane in London, you can visit them at and they’ve got really nice stuff there including a full range of Red Wing boots. That’s it for these boots here today.

Red Wing is a city in Goodhue County, Minnesota, United States, along the upper Mississippi River. The population was 16,459 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Goodhue County. Red Wing is home to the manufacturers of nationally known products: Red Wing Shoes, Riedell Ice and Roller Skates, and Red Wing Stoneware. The Cannon Valley Trail has its eastern terminus in Red Wing. Treasure Island Resort & Casino is operated by the nearby Prairie Island Indian Reservation. The National Trust for Historic Preservation placed Red Wing on its 2008 distinctive destinations list, which adds twelve communities annually nationwide. Red Wing was added for its impressive architecture and enviable natural environment.
The Minnesota Correctional Facility – Red Wing is a state juvenile correctional facility located in Red Wing, Minnesota. As of July, 2010, it housed 111 juvenile males, operating at about half of its licensed capacity. The prison also houses over 40 adult male prisoners in minimum-security, reentry housing. Built in 1889 as the Minnesota State Training School, the original Romanesque building was designed by Warren B. Dunnell, the architect of a number of historical public buildings in Minnesota, including the Minnesota State Public School for Dependent and Neglected Children, the Fergus Falls State Hospital Complex, the Minnesota Soldiers' Home Historic District, and the Pillsbury Academy Campus Historic District.
Dylan based Walls of Red Wing on the traditional Scottish folk ballad The Road and the Miles to Dundee, which he may have learned during his trip to London in early 1963, from other aspiring folk singers, such as Martin Carthy. In his narration, Dylan goes to describe a juvenile detention center in Red Wing, Minnesota. The description is hyperbolical, and goes to describe the students there as thrown in like bandits and cast off like criminals, the walls of barbed wire and the fence with electricity's sting, the guards holding their clubs like they were kings, and the supposed dungeon of the building. Despite these harrowing descriptions, Red Wing was not the impenetrable Gothic fortress (as John Bauldie calls it) portrayed in this song.
Walls of Red Wing
Singer - Joan Baez
Oh, the age of the inmates I remember quite freely
No younger than twelve, no older than seventeen
Thrown in like bandits and cast off like criminals
Inside the walls, the walls of Red Wing
From the dirty old mess hall you march to the brick wall
Too weary to talk and too tired to sing
Oh, it's all afternoon you remember your hometown
Inside the walls, the walls of Red Wing
Oh, the gates are cast iron and the walls are barbed wire
Stay far from the fence with electricity sting
And each keep your head down and stay in your number
Inside the walls, the walls of Red Wing
Oh, it's fare thee well to the deep hollow dungeon
Farewell to the boardwalk that takes you to the screen
Farewell to the minutes, they threaten you with it
Inside the walls, the walls of Red Wing
As the rain rattled heavy on the bunkhouse shingles
And the sounds in the night, they made my ears ring
Well the keys of the guards clicked the tune of the morning
Inside the walls, the walls of Red Wing
Oh, some of us will windup In St. Cloud Prison
And some of us will go on to be lawyers and things
And some of us will windup and meet you on your crossroads
From inside the walls, the walls of Red Wing

Radon is a harmful, radioactive gas that is found in homes and businesses in the United States. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sites it as a leading cause of lung cancer. The gas occurs naturally in the ground and can seep into buildings. Red Wing Minnesota Radon Mitigation specializes in testing methods that identify its presence and in effective removal. Radon has no color and no odor, making it difficult to identify without the assistance of Red Wing, Minnesota Radon Mitigation. The EPA states that radon is in the rock and soil that underlies all areas of the United States. As it escapes from the ground, it can seep into homes or buildings that are above an affected area.
It is thought that radon results from the breakdown of uranium into radium. Professional Red Wing Minnesota Radon Mitigation can test for the presence of the gas. Radon is everywhere and home or business owners need Red Wing MN Radon Mitigation to determine the level of concentration. In buildings where the levels are too high, professional Red Wing Minnesota Radon Mitigation can reduce them to acceptable levels. Air pressure in a building is lower than pressure in the ground, creating a vacuum-like suction that brings the gas inside through defects in foundations that Red Wing Minnesota Radon Mitigation fix. The association between radon and lung cancer makes it important for owners of buildings to rely on Red Wing, Minnesota Radon Mitigation for safe air quality.
The EPA indicates that radon can enter a home through a water supply, but Red Wing Minnesota Radon Mitigation know that the soil method is the more common form of entry. Red Wing Minnesota Radon Mitigation knows how to detect radon in a building and how to assess the level of concentration. Red Wing Minnesota Radon Mitigation find levels of radon in homes and buildings that is more than three times as high as radon levels in the outdoor air. Through study and practice, Red Wing, Minnesota Radon Mitigation is able to provide effective methods to reduce concentrations that are excessive. Anyone who suspects the presence of radon needs to select one of the qualified Red Wing Minnesota Radon Mitigation specialists to test for it.
Professional inspectors who are accustomed to working with radon identification provide the most reliable information for concerned citizens. Home test kits are available, but the danger that is posed by misleading information makes it important to rely on one of the qualified Red Wing, MN Radon Mitigation technicians for accurate readings. Techniques for reducing or eliminating radon often involve the placement of one or more suction points below the level of the foundation of a building. Additional methods that provide a way for gases to escape are used by Red Wing Minnesota Radon Mitigation.
A pipe that extends above the roof of a building allows gases to bypass the interior living space. Red Wing Minnesota Radon Mitigation performs extensive research to develop the most effective techniques that provide services that are helpful to home and business owners. The discovery of radon in a home or business building is often a matter of great concern, but owners can rely on professional Red Wing MN Radon Mitigation to provide a satisfactory solution to the problem. The presence of radon does not represent a permanent condition with the expert assistance provided by Red Wing, Minnesota Radon Mitigation. Call them today at (952) 938-1006.
