Rio Grande Gorge Bridge, Taos, New Mexico
We checked this out during our visit to Taos in June. The bridge is so cool, and the area is so incredibly beautiful! I love Taos!
Taos New Mexico and Rio Grande Gorge Bridge.
Cruise I took to visit Taos New Mexico and the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge over the February 28th weekend 2010. I was going to also take a couple video clips at the Taos Pueblo but decided not to after seeing a Pueblo cop busting a tourist ahead of me for a speeding ticket. And he was traveling slow from what I witnessed. Just killed my interest to visit. I lost my taste for spending 15 to 20 bucks to get in just to take a minute or so video clip if you know what I mean. Just like that poor Joe I've been victimized myself in the past. Instead of trying to fleece the public as a funding source they should be glad you came to visit at all. OK Rants done.

The Rio Grande is among the longest twenty-five rivers in the world and the fourth or fifth longest in North America. It starts near the Continental Divide in the San Juan Mountains, runs 470 miles through New Mexico to the border of Texas and the Mexican province of Chihuahua, and empties into the Gulf of Mexico. For about 1,250 miles it forms the international boundary between the two countries. The river is between 1,800 and 1,900 miles long overall, depending on how its course changes from year to year.

The Rio Grande flows out of the snowcapped Rocky Mountains in Colorado and journeys 1,900 miles to the Gulf of Mexico. It passes through 800-foot chasms of the Rio Grande Gorge, a wild and remote area of northern New Mexico. The canyon provides a wide variety of recreational opportunities, luring fishermen, hikers, artists, and whitewater boating enthusiasts. In 1968, the Rio Grande and Red River were among the first eight rivers Congress designated into the National Wild and Scenic River System to protect outstanding resources values.
The Wild and Scenic River flows through the Rio Grande Gorge Recreation Area. This includes the Wild Rivers on the north and the Orilla Verde areas in the south.
A spectacular vista of the Upper Gorge is from the High Bridge Overlook. The Lower Gorge Area of Critical Environmental Concern covers over 16,000 acres of public land along a 14-mile-long stretch of the Rio Grande from the village of Pilar to the Velarde Diversion Dam.

Rio Grande Gorge Bridge- Taos, New Mexico
Here are a few video segments I did of the Bridge and surrounding area...
Rio Grande - Colorado and New Mexico
The Rio Grande is one of the principal rivers in the southwest United States and northern Mexico (the other being the Colorado River). The Rio Grande begins in south-central Colorado in the United States and flows to the Gulf of Mexico.[8] Along the way, it forms part of the Mexico–United States border. According to the International Boundary and Water Commission, its total length was 1,896 miles (3,051 km) in the late 1980s, though course shifts occasionally result in length changes. Depending on how it is measured, the Rio Grande is either the fourth- or fifth-longest river system in North America.
This section of the Rio Grande is in southern Colorado, in the San Luis Valley, and northern New Mexico near Taos.

Rio Grande Gorge Bridge Inspection Project Profile Video
New Mexico State University selected Ayres Associates to complete the inspection of the bottom chord of the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge, which carries US Route 64 over the Rio Grande northwest of Taos, New Mexico. The steel deck arch bridge stands 565 feet above the Rio Grande. It is the seventh highest bridge in the U.S., and the 82nd highest bridge in the world.
Ayres provided a two-person field team to complete the climbing. The team gathered notes and digital photos and provided the information to New Mexico State University for inclusion in the bridge inspection report.
Ayres used rope access techniques to rappel down to the bottom chord from the bridge deck at the middle of the center span. From there each inspector walked one bottom chord. On day one, the inspectors worked from the middle of the center span to the west abutment. On day two, the inspectors worked from the middle of the center span to the east abutment.
At all times the inspectors maintained a personal fall arrest system and personal protective equipment compliant with OSHA. For emergency, additional rope was staged along the bridge to climb back to the bridge deck or rappel down to the ground in the end spans. The inspectors worked without incident and traversed the lower chord safely.
While at the piers, the inspectors viewed the bearings, concrete columns, and concrete struts. At the abutments, the inspectors also viewed the bearings. From the abutments, the inspectors could walk up to the bridge deck.
Ayres Associates has provided the inspections in 2013 and 2015.
