Vietnam Confirms 1st H5N1 Bird Flu Death in Year
Vietnam is confirming its first human death from bird flu in more than a year, but health officials say it's not related to a deadly outbreak of a new strain in China. Officials say a 4-year-old boy died of the H5N1 strain of bird flu last week. (April 9)
Likely case of bird flu spread by humans reported
Experts say there is no evidence of sustained human-to-human transmission after Chinese scientists reported the first likely case of direct person-to-person transmission of the H7N9 bird flu virus that has killed over 40 people since March. Duration: 01:12

We would not class this as an epidemic. Yes there are increasing numbers of poultry outbreaks and there is a threat to human health. But the government of Vietnam as well as WHO and various other partners have been providing information with regards to what people should do to protect themselves against bird flu.

STORYLINE:
Bird flu has returned to Asia and beyond, killing people and fowl across several countries while Vietnam grapples with a new strain of the H5N1 virus that has outsmarted poultry vaccines long used to help protect its flocks.
In Vietnam, there have been two bird flu related deaths since January, making them the first reported bird flu fatalities in nearly two years.
It has also experienced a burst of poultry outbreaks in ten provinces nationwide over the same period.
Roads leading to a village hit by an outbreak last week in Ha Nam province on the outskirts of the capital, Hanoi, were covered in a coat of lime powder to help control the spread.
Watching veterinarians spraying disinfectants at his farm, Nguyen Van Duong feared a bird flu epidemic would return.
2,400 ducks on his farm were infected with bird flu and subsequently were culled last month.
I am devastated at losing my investment on the ducks, but I will do anything to work with the authorities to stop it from spreading. The last thing I want is an epidemic to happen again, Duong said.
As winter cold snaps set in during the prime-time flu season, officials have issued fresh warnings for farmers to increase surveillance, especially since they can no longer rely on poultry vaccines to help keep the virus from spreading in the north and central regions where it has become useless.
Since December, eight other people have died in Cambodia, Indonesia, Egypt and China, which had gone 18 months without a reported death.
However, doctor Babatunde Olowokure, an epidemiologist with the World Health Organisation (WHO) in Vietnam, ruled out a bird flu epidemic at this stage.
The fresh wave of cases comes amid controversy over lab-created versions of the bird flu virus that spread more easily.
After a public uproar over whether the results should be published, the scientists who developed the viruses agreed to temporarily halt their research.
Experts have closely followed the H5N1 virus, which remains a bird-based disease that is hard for humans to catch.
Vietnam is home to 61 of the 345 human bird flu deaths reported worldwide by WHO since 2003, the second-highest total after Indonesia.

I think that any impact on GDP growth should be small, given our projection, it should be only 0.2 percent on growth and in any worst case, for example if it impacted on the tourism industry which generated annual income to the country of about $7.5 billion a year or 6 percent of GDP - in that case it could knock off a GDP growth by 0.5 percent . I think the bottom line should be at least 7 percent growth.

The avian flu that has hit Thailand will have a serious impact on millions of Thai's individual financial situation but is not likely to seriously slow national economic growth, according to experts.
The Thai stock market dropped three per cent on Monday after the government confirmed the first human death from the virus.
But economists say that investors often overreact to bad news, bringing the bourse down temporarily, and stock prices are expected to rebound.
The poultry industry is valued at about 2 and a half billion US dollars, accounting for two per cent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Thailand is Asia's top exporter of bird products.
Japan and the EU, which account for the majority of Thai poultry exports, have both slapped bans on Thai chickens.
However, economists say that if the disease can be contained quickly, and local people can be given confidence in the safety of cooked
chicken, the domestic market can help save farmers here.
An estimated 3.5 million farms produce poultry in Thailand.
This means that while overall growth in the nation might stay high, there may be many families whose personal fortunes are wiped out.
Human to human transmission would create a whole new problem, particularly with the tourism industry.
That scenario is not guaranteed, and economists say that even with such a development overall growth in Thailand should remain strong.
Last year's SARS epidemic didn't touch Thailand health-wise, but it did damage the tourism industry here.
Tour companies and hotels say that there have been some cancellations already and they are crossing their fingers hoping the disease is
contained and confidence restored.
Tourists are not likely to come in contact with chickens while on holiday here, a message that industry leaders and the government will hope they can spread quickly.

Bird Flu Is Making Your Breakfast Expensive
The worst outbreak of bird flu in U.S. history is causing egg prices to rise dramatically.

Transcript:
Have you noticed something changing at the grocery store?
ABC reports egg prices could rise 75 percent due to the worst bird flu outbreak in U.S. history. We already don't like the sound of this.
According to The Wall Street Journal, almost 40 million birds have been killed as a result of the outbreak –– more than double the toll of the last major outbreak during the 1980s. The current losses represent roughly 10 percent of the country's egg-laying flock.
And the issue has also affected products that use eggs as an ingredient.
A market reporter told CNN the wholesale price of eggs sold in liquid form, mostly used by bakers and restaurants, rose from 63 cents per dozen to $1.52 in April.
The Midwest has been hit particularly hard. KQDS reports a state of emergency has been declared in Minnesota, where 6 million birds have been euthanized.
It's even worse in Iowa, the biggest egg-producing state in the country. CNBC reports the virus has resulted in the death of more than 25 million chickens and turkeys in that state alone.
Large, concentrated populations of birds have contributed to the spread of the virus. The Wall Street Journal reports the average farm in the industry holds 1.5 million birds. When one hen house becomes infected, farms often euthanize all the others nearby to contain the virus.
A chief executive for one of the nation's largest producers told The Wall Street Journal consumer demand for low costs has led the industry to house more chickens in fewer farms. But having fewer producers can be disastrous when one gets the virus.
And the outbreak is causing hefty price tags outside the grocery aisles, too. The U.S. government has set aside close to $400 million to help pay for cleanup and compensate farmers for lost stock.

STORYLINE
Vietnam reported four new suspected cases of bird flu in people on Thursday, including one death, bringing to 18 the number of people believed to have been infected by the virus that has ravaged the region's poultry industry.
Doctors already have confirmed that the disease has killed three people, but World Health Organisation say it was significant that there had been no human-to human spread.
VOICE OVER:
00 02 Until last week, this was a thriving chicken farm in Vietnam's Lonjan Province.
00 07 But nine hundred of this farmer's chickens contracted the highly contagious bird flu.
00 11 Under orders from the agriculture ministry, they all had to be killed and burned .
00 16 That wiped out more than half of his stock.
Now he's left with about 600 chickens and he's very worried that the virus could spread to them as well.
00 25 FX burning
00 28 He's been issued with strong antibiotics and has sprayed every part of his farm in the hopes of preventing further outbreaks.
00 36 The government's greatest concern is the possibility of the virus spreading to the human population.
00 41 There are four new suspected cases of people contracting the virus from birds.
00 46 But the World Health Organisation says the fact they didn't catch it from other humans is encouraging.
00 52 SOUNDBITE: (English) Peter Cordingley, Spokesman, WHO Regional office in Manila:
At the moment, we're in a rather fortunate position. There is no sign whatsoever of human-to-human transmission of this virus, that's important. So, if it stays that way, this is easily controllable, we think. I mean, it will be a big, big effort because there's widespread infection among poultry, but it's nothing that represents a public health crisis.
01 18 But it's early days yet and until the outbreak's under control, deserted poultry farms like this one will become a familiar sight in Vietnam's countryside.
