15. SOUNDBITE (English), Stephen Harper, Canadian Prime Minister:
The Act of Remembrance that we perform today here, or wherever Canadians in uniform serve their country, must therefore be something beyond a solemn reminder of dear ones lost. It must call all Canadians to look beyond our sorrow. It asks us to honour in our lives at all times, what our forebears won by their deaths and to protect and preserve the peace they left to us.

STORYLINE
Canadian prime minister Stephen Harper visited Hong Kong on Sunday where he held talks with Chief Executive, Leung Chu-ying, and paid tribute to Canada's fallen soldiers at a Remembrance Day ceremony.
Canada is home to 500,000 individuals of Hong Kong descent and Hong Kong has the largest concentration of Canadians abroad next to the United States.
During Harper's visit, both governments signed an agreement for the avoidance of double taxation and the prevention of fiscal evasion with respect to taxes on income.
The agreement will further strengthen economic and trade ties between the two, and provide added incentives for companies in Canada to do business or invest in Hong Kong, and vice versa.
Harper also participated in a Remembrance Day ceremony on Sunday, paying special tribute to Canadians who died defending Hong Kong during the Second World War.
By their deaths they made possible the freedom we enjoy, the democracy by which we govern ourselves and the justice under which we live. These are the flowers that flourish upon their graves, Harper said at the ceremony at the the Sai Wan Bay War Cemetery, where 283 Canadians are buried.
The Act of Remembrance that we perform today here, or wherever Canadians in uniform serve their country, must therefore be something beyond a solemn reminder of dear ones lost, he added.
Hong Kong is the last stop of his Asia visit.
He travelled to India and the Philippines before visiting Hong Kong.

MVI 1409: 30th August 2015 Hong Kong remembers the war dead
The Sai Wan War Cemetry: on the 70th anniversary of the Allied re-ocuppation, a small service to honour and remember the war dead who lay here. All were soldiers, sailors, airmen, aid workers and civilians. They were British, Canadian, Chinese, Dutch, Indian and Portugese. Majority of them perished during the Battle of Hong Kong and the remaining during the Japanese occupation.
Hong Kong at War - The Gardens of Stone
Following the Battle of Hong Kong and the occupation of the city by Japanese forces, colonial troops and some civilians were buried in the Sai Wan War Cemetery (Chinese: 西灣國殤紀念墳場). There are nearly 2000 interned here, including many who died in the Battle of Hong Kong and POWs who were sent elsewhere in Asia and passed away. There are over 200 Canadian troops buried here, including Brigadier General John K. Lawson, the highest ranking officer to die in the Battle of Hong Kong.
This is a Periscope video of my trip to the cemetery but you won't see the comments from the people who were watching it live. At times it might seem like I'm talking to myself but there were people chatting with me as I walked through the cemetery.

The Gravekeeper- Cheung Yu Keung
Cheung Yu Keung is a former British soldier in his early sixties. After he discharged from the army, he became the one who manages the war graves of Commonwealth soldiers in Hong Kong and later, the entire China.
Americans and Dutch soldiers are also buried in war graves managed by him.
He has to deal with a lot of stuff. From gardening of the cemetery to organising memorial ceremonies for veterans from different countries.
In 2010, he was awarded the MBE medal from Queen Elizabeth II because of his service over the years.
Hong Kong Cemetery
Hong Kong Cemetery (Chinese: 香港墳場), formerly Hong Kong (Happy Valley) Cemetery and before that Hong Kong Colonial Cemetery, is one of the early Christian cemeteries in Hong Kong dating to its colonial era beginning in 1845. It is located beside the racecourse at Happy Valley, along with the Jewish Cemetery, Hindu Cemetery, Parsee Cemetery, St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery and the Muslim Cemetery. Hong Kong Cemetery contains 79 scattered Commonwealth burials of the First World War and 62 from the Second World War, which are maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
The Protestant Cemetery is built as a series of terraces ascending a hillside. The older graves tend to be at the bottom of the hill; those from the 1930s and 1940s are generally at the top.
On a number of occasions, remains in the Protestant Cemetery have been disinterred to make way for road developments, and have been placed in niches in an ossuary, which continues to be used for contemporary cremations. The niches provide basic information on each individual.
A scene in John le Carré's novel The Honourable Schoolboy takes place in the nearby racetrack as well as the cemetery.
The cemetery is a popular place for filming movies and TV shows. The UK folk artist Johnny Flynn released a song in 2008 about the cemetery, found on the album A Larum.
