Learning about Islam in Dubai at Sheikh Mohammed Cultural Centre
One of the highlights of my Dubai adventure was a visit to the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding ( where we were greeted by Nasif Kayed, the center's managing director. His down-to-earth and funny speech set the tone for a very moving and informative visit. We learned a bit about the history of this tiny country, one of the now United Arab Emirates. We learned about what it's like to be a real Emirati, who only make up about 15% of Dubai's population (the rest being guest workers and expats).
Afterwards, we visited the Mosque and learned what the symbolism was of the things inside.

More from my visit to the Sheikh Mohammed Cultural Centre in Dubai
One of the highlights from my recent Dubai adventure was a visit to the Sheik Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding. Our host, Nasif Kayed, the center's managing director, taught us a lot about the history of the UAE, but also about Arabic and Islamic culture and tradition.
Here is the second part of his introduction to Dubai and Islam. I am with a group of other journalists and was in Dubai visiting some of the incredible Hilton properties there.

I decided to explore the historic district. After passing through a mosque located in the center of the historic district, the old cramped alley comes out. There are more than 60 traditional houses in and around the city. If you hit Seoul, it is like Bukchon. I went through one of them. There are many doors in the house. This is an inner courtyard, and depending on how many doors I have, I could see how many houses I have in this house. Everyone raised a tree. Trees give a lot of benefits. I used to make shade or plant trees for shampoo or soap. Every tree has its own function. Go inside. I'm a stranger, knock, open the door a little. Do you see me? Yes You can see me inside, but I can not see inside at all. Suppose a woman in the house is not covering her face. You said you were not covering your face at home? So I can make time to cover up my face and call my husband to greet my guests. It can also be found on the building wall. The longer it gets, the harder it gets. The coral stones were brought from the neighborhood. The coral stone is still widely used as building material. Hundreds of years ago, how did the Dubai people know and use this? I once again admired their wisdom and concluded their cultural experience. It was a great tour. The explanation was very detailed and clear, and I answered all the questions carefully. I learned so much, and it was so good to have even talked so much fun.

Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding 01, 360 video
Dubai is a uniquely modern and cosmopolitan city and the United Arab Emirates is home for families from all over the world, each with their own distinctive culture. Expatriates and UAE nationals are neighbours; however they can also be strangers. His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, saw the need to reach out and educate expatriates in the traditions and customs of the UAE. His vision led to the creation of The Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding (SMCCU) in 1998.

Al Bastakiya | Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood
See what traditional life in Old Dubai was like during the mid-19th century at Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood. Located along the Dubai Creek, this district is a key heritage site which has preserved much of the original infrastructure.
The traditional wind towers constructed from stone, teak, gypsum, palm wood and sandalwood represent only a small part of Al Fahidi’s history. Each alley, twisting pathway and breezy tower tells a story of a life before the Emirates.
Social life, cultural development and trade were prominent throughout this period. And you can still experience what life was like within these same streets – a must when visiting Dubai.
Follow the winding streets in Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood to discover a plethora of cultural activities, museums, art galleries, special events and traditional food.
The Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding is located here, where you can take a tour of all the different aspects of this district. Keep an eye out for the Sikka Art Fair, Artists-in-Residence Programme, Heritage Week, holiday events and religious celebrations like Ramadan.
Escape the skyscrapers and take a glimpse into how Emiratis from past generations lived their lives in this historical district.
