Protesters Hang off St. Johns Bridge to Block Ice Breaker
Portland, Or, 7-29-2015
According to GreenPeace, 26 climbers have used ropes to rappel over the St. Johns Bridge to block Shell’s Arctic icebreaker vessel.
Greenpeace tells KOIN 6 News that 13 people have secured themselves in place suspended from the bridge with enough supplies to last for days. The other 13 people are acting as look out and safety teams for the climbers under the bridge.
Portland Police Sgt. Pete Simpson, a police spokesperson, says the agency is monitoring the situation. The St. Johns Bridge is closed to pedestrian traffic. Vehicle traffic is being allowed to cross the bridge, however, police are warning drivers not to stop, or they could face citations or arrests, police say.
At this point, Simpson says there is no intention of bureau officers climbing down the bridge to get the climbers. Police could not independently confirm the number of people who are reportedly hanging from the bridge. Simpson says that when the people come off the bridge, the bureau will look into charges of trespassing.
Lt. Steve Alexander, a spokesperson with the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office, which operates the River Patrol Unit, says MCSO crews are on scene and helping. He says the agency will not take action unless someone hits the water and needs to be rescued.
The United States Coast Guard, which is in charge of vessel traffic, is monitoring the situation.
The Royal Dutch Shell PLC icebreaker Fennica arrived in Portland for repairs after it was damaged this month in the Aleutian Islands when it struck an underwater obstruction, tearing a gash in its hull.

Bridge of God, Oregon, United States
The Bridge of the Gods is a steel truss cantilever bridge that spans the Columbia River between Cascade Locks, Oregon, and Washington state near North Bonneville. It is approximately 40 miles (64 kilometers) east of Portland, Oregon, and 4 miles (6.4 km) upriver from the Bonneville Dam. It is a toll bridge operated by the Port of Cascade Locks.
The bridge was completed by Wauna Toll Bridge Company and opened in 1926 at a length of 1,127 feet (343 m). The higher river levels resulting from the construction of the Bonneville Dam required the bridge to be further elevated in 1940 and extended to its current length of 1,856 feet (565 m). The Columbia River Bridge Company of Spokane, Washington, acquired ownership of the bridge in 1953 for $735,000.The Port of Cascade Locks Commission now operates the bridge.
The bridge is named after the historic geologic feature also known as Bridge of the Gods.
The Pacific Crest Trail crosses the Columbia River on the Bridge of the Gods, and the lowest elevation of the trail is on this bridge.

Drive Historic Lewis & Clark Bridge - Rainier, OR to Longview, WA - Kevin Hunter
SUBSCRIBE HERE!! The Lewis and Clark Bridge is a cantilever bridge that spans the Columbia River between Longview, Washington and Rainier, Oregon. At the time of completion, it had the longest cantilever span in the United States. The bridge was opened on March 29, 1930, as a privately owned bridge named the Longview Bridge.
The bridge was opened on March 29, 1930, as a privately owned bridge named the Longview Bridge. The $5.8 million cost was recovered by tolls, $1.00 for cars and $.10 for pedestrians. At the time it was the longest and highest cantilever bridge in the United States. The state of Washington purchased the bridge in 1947 and the tolls were removed in 1965 after the bridge was paid for. In 1980 the bridge was rededicated as the Lewis and Clark Bridge in honor of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The deck was replaced in 2003–04 at a cost of $29.2 million.
The bridge is 8,288 ft (2.5 km) long with 210 ft (64 m) of vertical clearance. The main span is 1,200 ft (366 m) long and the top of the bridge is 340 ft (104 m) above the river. It was designed by Joseph Strauss, engineer of the Golden Gate Bridge.
In 1982, the bridge was entered on the National Register of Historic Places, as the Longview Bridge.

Occupy The Post Office II - Occupy St. Johns (Portland Oregon) 7.9.12
A follow up to the Occupy the Post Office action in which ten people
were arrested just over a month ago. Communities and Postal
Workers United, Occupy Portland, Occupy St. Johns, and community
supporters rallied outside of the St. Johns central Postal Station in
north Portland. They were protesting the possible future closures of
some of 13,000 rural Post Offices as well as 25-30% cuts in pay and
losses of thousands of jobs.
This is part of a national campaign called Save Americas Postal
Service, which is gaining momentum in several states and aims
to save Americas longest running civil service.
