Statue Square Central, Hong Kong
स्ट्याच्यु स्क्वायर सेन्ट्रल, हङकङ !
Statue Square (Chinese: 皇后像廣場; lit. Empress' Statue Square) is a public pedestrian square in Central, Hong Kong. Built entirely on reclaimed land at the end of the 19th century, Statue Square consists of two parts separated by Chater Road into a northern and a southern section. It is bordered by Connaught Road Central in the north and by Des Voeux Road Central in the south.
The name is a reference to the statues, mainly of British royalty, which stood on the square until the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong during World War II. Today, the only statue on the square is the one of Sir Thomas Jackson, 1st Baronet, an early HSBC banker.

You're about to enter one of the buildings of greatest economic importance in Hong Kong: the HSBC is the sixth largest bank in the world, and number one in Hong Kong.
It was founded by Scotsman Thomas Sutherland in 1865 to support the growing businesses of local farmers. Other branches were soon opened in Shanghai and in Thailand, and by the end of the 20th century, the HSBC had become Asia's leading bank.
Before the modern building you can see today, the spot was occupied by the original headquarters of the bank, built in 1935 and demolished at the end of the 1970s to make way for the new construction you're about to visit.
The present building saw the light of day in 1985, thanks to a brilliant project by the British architect Lord Norman Foster. As you can see, this is not one of the tallest buildings in Central District: it's just” 180 meters tall, with 47 floors of offices and meeting rooms.
It has a number of features, however, that make it truly special.
Its construction in the 1980s cost over a billion dollars, and in 1985 it was the most expensive building on the planet!
If you admire this elegant skyscraper from the outside, you'll immediately notice the intricate, sophisticated steel support system that makes it a building like no other...

CHINA: HONG KONG: TIANANMEN SQUARE ANNIVERSARY: STATUE ERECTED
English/Nat
The statue that commemorates those who died in the crushing of the Tiananmen Square democracy protests in 1989 has been erected in a park in Hong Kong.
On the eve of the 10th anniversary of China's student crackdown, people in Hong Kong are continuing to demand that the government in Beijing reverses its official line on Tiananmen.
The Chinese government brands the peaceful demonstrations in Beijing's Tiananmen Square as an attempt to overthrow the government, and says the military crackdown on June 4, 1989, was justified.
The so-called Pillar of Shame was once again on display in Hong Kong's Victoria Park on Wednesday.
The monument, which was sculpted out of stone in 1997, spends most of the year at Hong Kong University.
Each year, on the eve of the anniversary of Tiananmen Square, it is transported to the park to be displayed publicly.
Beijing tries to suppress any commemoration of the hundreds killed in Tiananmen Square.
But in Hong Kong, where demonstrations can still take place relatively freely, people are gearing up for a loud and poignant remembrance on Friday's 10th anniversary.
Pro-democracy activists on Thursday gathered outside the former Chinese de facto Embassy, the Xinhua news Agency.
Here they presented a petition signed by more than 25-thousand people on the Internet, urging China to release all political prisoners and bring those responsible for the human rights violations during the Tiananmen crackdown to justice.
They also called for Li Peng, who was the premier at the time of the Tiananmen crackdown, to be put on trial for murder.
No Chinese officials from Xinhua received the petition, forcing the protesters to leave a floppy disk and copies of the signatures at the building's entrance.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
The Chinese authority (is) frightened of the 10th anniversary of the June 4th and that's why they have silent foreign media such as CNN.
SUPER CAPTION: Lau San-ching, dissident
Meanwhile, workers are setting up the stage for Friday night's big candle light vigil.
Tens of thousand of people are expected to attend.
Dissidents such as Wang Dang have been denied visas for Hong Kong, but Wang is expected to go to the Portuguese colony of Macau, where he will be attending a conference.
The visit will be the closest he has been to Chinese soil since his exile last year.

Hi, my name's Rick, and I'm your personal guide. Along with MyWoWo, I'd like to welcome you to one of the Wonders of the World: Statue Square.
Statue Square, in the heart of the financial neighborhood, Central District is one of the most beautiful squares in Hong Kong.
Divided into two by Chater Road, it was originally called Royal Square because it was designed to host the bronze statues of the British royals. During the Second World War, the Japanese invaders removed most of the statues and melted down the bronze to make weapons. Today the only statue in the square is dedicated to Sir Thomas Jackson, one of the first managers of the HSBC (Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation), whose splendid headquarters look onto the square.
Beside the HSBC building, and contrasting sharply with its modern style, is the Neoclassical Former Legislative Council Building, an imposing, elegant construction surrounded by porticoes, with balconies and a large central dome.
On the opposite side of the square from the two impressive buildings you've just seen is a commemorative monument dedicated to the inhabitants of Hong Kong during the World Wars: the Cenotaph, built in 1923, was initially only in honor of the victims of the Great War...

HONG KONG CENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICT | FAMOUS BUILDINGS IN HONG KONG
#centralhongkong #hongkong #discoverhongkong
Welcome to Hong Kong's Central Business District, where we show you the most famous buildings in Hong Kong. The Hong Kong skyline is probably the most famous in the world, with its iconic buildings, each with different features, and designed by feng shui masters to attract wealth and prosperity for the country.
Each one is a different shape, colour, and even angled differently. Some 1200 international multinational companies are based in Hong Kong, and Central also hosts the biggest international banks. including HSBC, Citibank, Standard Chartered, Bank of America, JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley, and many more.
Central being the CBD of Hong Kong is also where many doctors and lawyers are located, as well as the legislative council, final court of appeal. Cheung Kong is definitely one of the most famous iconic buildings, owned by Li Ka Shing.
'Central (also Central District; Chinese: 中環) is the central business district of Hong Kong. It is located in Central and Western District, on the north shore of Hong Kong Island, across Victoria Harbour from Tsim Sha Tsui, the southernmost point of Kowloon Peninsula. The area was the heart of Victoria City, although that name is rarely used today.
As the central business district of Hong Kong, it is the area where many multinational financial services corporations have their headquarters. Consulates general and consulates of many countries are also located in this area, as is Government Hill, the site of the government headquarters. The area, with its proximity to Victoria Harbour, has served as the centre of trade and financial activities from the earliest days of the British colonial era in 1841, and continues to flourish and serve as the place of administration after the transfer of sovereignty to China in 1997.
Central is located on the north shore of Hong Kong Island, across Victoria Harbour from Tsim Sha Tsui, the southernmost point of Kowloon Peninsula. It is bordered in the west by Sheung Wan, with the border being along Aberdeen Street (also called Wing Kut Street). It is bordered in the east by Admiralty, an eastern extension of the central business district. As such, Admiralty is sometimes considered a part of Central. Central is bordered in the south by Mid-levels, an area halfway up Victoria Peak. The boundary between Central and Mid-levels is not clearly defined.
For district council elections purposes, the area, together with Admiralty, correspond roughly to the Chung Wan constituency.[2] The boundaries of such constituencies may be subject to modification.[3]

Tiananmen Square: What happened in the protests of 1989? - BBC News
Thirty years ago, Beijing's Tiananmen Square became the focus for large-scale protests, which were crushed by China's Communist rulers.
The events produced one of the most iconic photos of the 20th Century - a lone protester standing in front of a line of army tanks.
What led up to the events?

Statue Square – Hsbc–Gebäude – Hong Kong – Audioguide – MyWoWo Travel App

Statue Square – Präsentation – Hong Kong – Audioguide – MyWoWo Travel App
