Tang Ancestral Hall, Ping Shan, Hong Kong
Tang Ancestral Hall, Ping Shan, New Territories, Hong Kong
It is one of the largest ancestral halls in the territory.
It was constructed by Tang Fung-shun, the fifth generation ancestor of Tang Clan about 700 years ago. It is the main ancestral hall of the Tang clan of Ping Shan. It is a three-hall structure with two internal courtyards. The wooden brackets and beams of the three halls are carved with auspicious Chinese motifs. Shiwan dragon-fish and pottery unicorns decorate the main ridges and roofs.
There are ancestral tablets at the altar at the rear hall.
This ancestral hall is still used regularly for worship and celebrations of traditional festivals and ceremonies, as well as a meeting place for the Tang clan of Ping Shan.

Tech brings heritage to life (12.2.2017)
Built in the Qing dynasty by the Tang clan of Ping Shan, the Tang Ancestral Hall in Yuen Long boasts two internal courtyards dotted with wooden plaques embossed with big golden Chinese characters.
The majestic structure has been used by the Tang clan for traditional ceremonies like celebratory lantern lighting after the birth of a son.
With such age-old rituals still being conducted in the hall, it bears witness to the evolution of both the Tang clan and Yuen Long.
The Tang Ancestral Hall is among the antique structures featured in the “Reminiscences: Life in Hong Kong's Built Heritage” exhibition, presented by the Leisure & Cultural Services Department and organised by the Antiquities & Monuments Office.
Immersive experience
Through the use of augmented reality and laser scanning technology, historic landmarks like the Tang Ancestral Hall are recreated in 3D displays, giving the audience an immersive experience.
The show also features more than 50 exhibits, including the bishop’s throne at St John's Cathedral, the door lock and key of Victoria Prison in Central, and Hong Kong's oldest pawn shop signboard from the Chun Yuen Pawn House in Yuen Long Old Market - the oldest pawn shop in Hong Kong still in business today.
The well-preserved heritage on display in the exhibition shows the painstaking effort put into conserving Hong Kong's relics amid rapid urban development.
Witnesses to history
To help visitors better understand how Hong Kong’s architectural styles have evolved over the past century, the expo features a display chronicling the love story of character couple Mary and Ying-wo, whose lives are interwoven with those of local historical landmarks.
Mary prays at St Andrew's Church in Tsim Sha Tsui and studies at Maryknoll Convent School in Kowloon City.
Ying-wo learns from his village elders that Cheung Chun Yuen in Kam Tin is a martial arts training school.
Antiquities & Monuments Office Assistant Curator Terence Ng said Cheung Chun Yuen was established in the mid-19th century.
It was one of the few study halls in Hong Kong training youths for the imperial military examinations.
Interactive exhibits
In addition to the story of Mary and Ying-wo, the show also features hi-tech interactive exhibits to help visitors learn more about the architectural features of antique buildings.
Laser scanning technology is used to create 3D mock-ups of the Tsim Sha Tsui Clock Tower and the Tang Ancestral Hall.
Used originally for relic repairs, the technology scans the structure, collects the data and recreates a 3D model which is then projected onto a screen at the exhibition.
Antiquities & Monuments Office Land Surveyor Henry Kwok said the technology creates an immersive experience.
Visitors can see the plaques decorating the Tang Ancestral Hall up close. They can see the hollowed-out design of the plaque frame and the delicate dragon head embellishing the top of the frame.
Besides 3D laser scanning, augmented reality technology is also used.
Artefacts from history books pop up on tablet computers, allowing visitors to study the relics from different angles.
The exhibition is one of the events celebrating the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
It is being held at the Heritage Discovery Centre in Kowloon Park until May 1. (
Drizzy Day in Hong Kong & Liu Man Shek Tong Ancestral Hall
Drizzy Day in Hong Kong.
I Think I Write a Vlog & Podcast.
Today reminds me of an old Helen Reddy Song I Think I'll Write A Song.
The song was written by Australian Singer, Actor and Activist Helen Reddy herself about a foggy day in LA, and trying to write a song while being constantly interrupted, feeding the baby, and saying farewell to a friend.
I have so much to do; top brand & MNC old clients to meet; my favorite Hong Kong dishes to savor at all new places in Sheung Shui & Fanling as well as my old favorite Outlets all over such as Causeway Bay, Wanchai, and Cheung Chau where I use to live; my God-Daughter's first baby girl to hug (but she asked me to wait - too busy caring for her baby and work just like the song says); my third brother’s birthday tomorrow to celebrate; Shenzhen & Macau to visit...
But this morning feels cold and wet… maybe I stay at home, sweet, home in a Sheung Shui Wai Village where Liu Man Shek Tong Ancestral Hall is (“Liu” or “Liao” 廖in Mandarin).
The five clans of Hau, Tang (Yuen Long), Pang, Liu and Man were Chinese from Guangdong, Fujian and Jiangxi who lived mostly in the New Territories and eventually became Punti speakers.

Uniquely Hong Kong: Taoist Paper Art
Burning paper money and effigies is common in traditional Chinese religions, particularly Taoism. They are used to imitate the appearance of objects used by the living - including Wii controllers, iPads and electric guitars - and then burned as an offering. In this episode of our Uniquely Hong Kong series, we explore the craft with an effigy-making master who tells us about his most extravagant client request.
Hong Kong Fanling Tang Ancestry Hall
Dajiao, called the Taiping Qingjiao or Taipingqingjiao in Hong Kong, is a Taoist ritual and festival which is performed every year. The ritual is for asking the Taoist deities peace and rest in that area. Pak Tai is a common Chinese god for this festival. Believers must eat vegetarian at the festival. It is performed across Greater China: Sichuan, Fujian, Taiwan, Guangdong and Hong Kong. The Tang Clan perform this once in every 10 year.

2017Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery
Ep.27-Ancestral Halls in China -- BONTV
The ancestral hall of the Xiang family(项氏祠堂) has just been confirmed as being built more than 500 years ago. It is the only well preserved ancestral hall in Daye(大冶) in Hunan province.
Ancestral halls are used by large families for ancestor worship. They're also the location of weddings, funerals, birthdays and for celebrating festivals. The glazed tiles along the eaves have been caved into vivid patterns of flowers, birds and dragons. The hall has 2 plaques, with the first reading The tomb of the Xiang family's earliest ancestor.
Interview: 柯小杰 Ke Xiao Jie, male, curator of Daye Cultural Centre
The stage and the lighting of the courtyard are very special. The style of architecture as a whole, is quite unique, especially the design of combining the courtyard and stage as one.
Based on the architectural style and the genealogy records, we estimate that the ancestral hall was built during Ming Dynasty. It has been destroyed several times during different war periods and then rebuilt several times during the last few hundred years.
The whole building is 460 sq meters, and the section first built in the Ming Dynasty is 106sq meters. The Xiang family is said to have settled in Daye about 600 years ago. This was when the Yuan Dynasty was overthrown and replaced by the Ming Dynasty. Some speculate that the family may have fled to Daye to escape the war and then built the ancestral hall.
