梧桐河上游的鶴藪和流水響灌溉水塘，為下游的農田提供灌溉水源。由於梧桐河流具有重要的生態功能，流域內有三條「具重要生態價值河溪」，包括沙羅洞、萬屋邊及丹山河。沙羅洞是一個「具特殊科學價值地點」，此處共錄得超過七十種蜻蜓，包括被國際自然保護聯盟列為「瀕危」的克氏小葉春蜓。此外，丹山河孕育了種類繁多的河溪生物，例如香港瘰螈、沼蝦及擬平鰍等。

早在元代末年，已有鄧氏與廖氏族人在梧桐河流域建村立業。流域內有不少文物古蹟，其中覲龍圍和松嶺鄧公祠，皆被列為香港法定古蹟。

為了紓緩新界北區水浸問題，梧桐河下游河道被改道及渠道化，而一些被截斷的河曲，則保留為補償濕地。

Located at the upper course of Ng Tung River, Hok Tau and Lau Shui Heung Irrigation Reservoirs provide irrigation water for farmland at downstream. Since Ng Tung River provides important ecological functions, three sections of the river have been designated as “Ecologically Important Streams”, namely Sha Lo Tung, Man Uk Pin and Tan Shan River. Sha Lo Tung is a “Site of Special Scientific Interest”, and more than 70 species of dragonfly have been recorded, including the Chinese Tiger (Gomphidia kelloggi), which has been listed as “Endangered” by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Besides, Tan Shan River provides habitats for a wide variety of flora and fauna such as Hong Kong Newt, Long-armed Shrimp and Broken-band Hillstream Loach.

Back in the last year of the Yuan dynasty, the clans of Tang and Liu set up villages in the Ng Tung River catchment. Historical buildings could be found such as Kun Lung Wai and Tang Chung Ling Ancestral Hall; both are declared monuments designated by the Antiquities and Monuments Office.

To alleviate the problem of flooding in the northern part of the New Territories, the lower course of Ng Tung River has been channelised and diverted. While meanders were straightened, some cut-offs have been kept as compensation wetlands.
