The High Road to Taos Scenic Byway begins north of Santa Fe in Pojoaque, New Mexico, at the intersection of U.S. 285/84 and State Road 503. It continues along State Road 503 to Nambé Pueblo. Founded in the 14th century, Nambé means People of the Round Earth in Tewa, their native language.
Taos Pueblo is an ancient pueblo belonging to a Taos-speaking Native American tribe of Puebloan people. It lies about 1 mile north of the modern city of Taos, New Mexico, USA.
Taos Plaza is a center of shops and monuments within the Taos Downtown Historic District in Taos, New Mexico.

Modern Taos New Mexico
Taos is historical city with incrdible indigenous Pueblo people of Mexico.
They were master of the land and harnessed food energy and supported the life for thousands of years.
Until the outsiders came marching in and took their land and used their skills and labour to build churches and incredible towns and cities.
Taos Pueblo and its culture have evolved over the decades since New Mexico’s inclusion in the United States
A Walk Around the Plaza In Taos, New Mexico
Taos Plaza is the Heart of Taos. This is the center of the Taos Historic District where locals gather for Taos Plaza Live concerts, May through October and visitors enjoy the shops and galleries that surround the Plaza all year long.
The original Spanish settlement of scattered farms evolved in Taos Valley about 1615. But in 1680, thesettlers were driven out by the Pueblo Revolt. Spanish authority was not reestablished until 1696 with the reconquest by Don Diego de Vargas. The area was firmly resettled by 1710. In 1796 the Don Fernando de Taos Land Grant was given to 63 families by the King of Spain. This resulted in the Map of Taos Plaza establishment of the current Taos Plaza and surrounding community. Don Fernando de Taos became the most important settlement in the area outside of the ancient San Geronimo de Taos Pueblo two miles to the north. Homes were built in large quadrangles, thus offering a fortress-like structure. Hostile raiding Indians from outside the Taos area were thwarted in their attempts to enter the village. Sentries stationed at the corners of the fortified village kept vigil day and night. A huge gate offered the only means of entry and exit to and from the Plaza. The enclosure served as a refuge for livestock at night, and merchants displayed their wares there during trade fairs. Over the years, there were many fires within the Plaza and many buildings were lost and rebuilt. Because the buildings were contiguous, a fire in one usually spread to others. The character of the present structures around the Plaza dates from the 1930s.
Today the current Plaza, with its many shops and galleries, is a natural gathering place for locals and visitors alike.

Rio Grande Gorge - Taos Junction
Approximately 15 miles south of Taos, New Mexico the Taos Junction is the nexus of the Rio Pueblo de Taos and Rio Grande.
The Rio Grande Gorge Visitor's Center is located in Pilar, NM, at the intersection of NM 570 and NM 68 the Visitor Center provides information about the recreation experiences to be had in the area as well as about the geological and natural history of this diverse and interesting area. From May 1 through October, the Visitor Center is open 7 days per week from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Winter hours are from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. 7 days per week. For more information, contact the Visitor Center at 575-751-4899, or the Taos Field Office at 575-758-8851.
Access to the Orilla Verde Recreation Area is provided by NM 570. The Visitor Center is located 1 mile south of the Recreation Area in the town of Pilar at the intersection of NM 570 and NM 68. The Recreation Area includes trails, seven campgrounds, boat launches, picnic tables, grills, drinking water, and restrooms. Two group shelters are available.
There are seven campgrounds with tables, fire grills, and restrooms. Four of the campgrounds also have drinking water and shelters available. Pilar Campground and Río Bravo Campground both have RV sites with water and electric hookup (no sewer). Pay showers are also available at Río Bravo Campground.
Group Shelters are available by reservation. Each group shelter accommodates up to 40 people. Fees for the group shelters are $30.00/day use and $40.00/overnight. For reservations, call 575-758-8851.
The Orilla Verde Recreation Area is located within the Rio Grande Del Norte National Monument and along the Rio Grande Wild and Scenic River. Nestled along the banks of the Rio Grande and within the steep-walled Rio Grande Gorge, the campgrounds in this area offer nearby access to the river. The elevation along the river is 6,100 feet and the steep canyon rises 800 feet from the river to the Gorge rim.
Gentle waters with occasional small rapids flow through Orilla Verde, providing an ideal setting for many recreational activities. Because of the dramatic changes in elevation and the diversity of plant life, Orilla Verde draws many species of animals, including raptors (such as eagles and hawks), songbirds, waterfowl, beaver, cougar, ringtail, mule deer, and more. The Rio Grande also has attracted humans since prehistoric times. Evidence of ancient peoples is found throughout the Recreation Area in the form of petroglyphs on the rocks and many other types of archaeological sites.
The canyon ecosystem descends 800 feet from rim to river, creating a unique diversity in plant and animal life. Ancient piсon and juniper forests include 500 year-old trees. Watchable wildlife opportunities include mule deer, red-tailed hawk, mountain blue-bird, and prairie dog. The climate is semi-arid with summer thunderstorms common in July and August, and snow possible from November through March. Summer temperatures range from 45 to 90F and in winter from -15 to 45F.

Gov. Martinez touts tourism in visit to Taos
On Oct. 8, 2015 New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez visited Taos, N.M. to speak about improvements to the state's economy and promote success of the state’s “New Mexico True” marketing campaign. At the core of the governor's presentation was a recent report that found the tourism industry continuing to gain momentum. The report found that visitors spent $6.1 billion statewide in 2014, including $235 million in Taos County. Martinez noted that figure for Taos County was up 17 percent since she took office in 2010. Taos Pueblo
Taos Pueblo is an ancient pueblo belonging to a Taos (Northern Tiwa) speaking Native American tribe of Pueblo people. It is approximately 1000 years old. They are considered to be the oldest continuously inhabited communities in the United States.
Most archeologists believe that the Taos Indians along with other Pueblo Indians settled along the Rio Grande migrated from the Four Corners region. The dwellings of that region were inhabited by the Ancient Pueblo Peoples (Anasazi), and a long drought in the area in the late 13th century may have caused them to move to the Rio Grande where the water supply was more dependable.
Throughout its early years, Taos Pueblo was a central point of trade between the native populations along the Rio Grande and their neighbors to the northeast, the Plains Tribes.
