Road Trip to Seattle..Ended up staying a couple of days in Portland Oregon. This is the first of several slideshows of our stay. We would have liked to stay a lot longer because there are a lot of places to see in this beautiful part of the country. This beautiful 62-acre Catholic shrine and botanical garden is located in Portland, Oregon. The Grotto is the popular name of The National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother. It is a non-profit organization supported solely by the proceeds of its gift shop and by donations. It is administered by the Order of Friars Servants of Mary, USA Province.
The Grotto is open daily throughout the year.(Closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas following the celebration of Mass.)Full schedule of Hours of Operation found under the About Us menu.
The heart of the shrine is Our Lady's Grotto, a rock cave carved into the base of a 110-foot cliff. A life-size marble replica of Michelangelo's Pietà is featured in its center.
St. Peregrine Mass
A monthly Mass and blessing with the relic of St. Peregrine is celebrated at The Grotto in the Chapel of Mary on the first Saturday of the month at 12 noon. The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick People At this monthly Mass, all intentions received at the St. Peregrine Shrine are included in the petitions of the Mass.
Dambana, Filipino Faith Shrine
The Dambana (Tagalog translation for altar) is like a pergola, only shaped like a traditional Filipino woman's head gear called salakot. The columns, which also serve as walls, are made of capiz, a kind of flat seashell commonly used on windows in Filipino homes. The Dambana was designed by Hermes Mallari.
Let this be a sanctuary of peace for all peoples of the earth and surely in this day a sanctuary is needed. Torn with differences, strife, and grief, the world needs sanctuary where the human spirit can seek peace and consolation.
Today, we welcome people from around the world, people of all faiths and no faith. Without exception our visitors speak of the peace they experience here in the spiritual and natural beauty of this sanctuary, where God's presence abounds and where special tribute is given to Mary, the Sorrowful Mother of Jesus.
The Grotto continues to grow over the years to meet the needs of the people in an ever-changing world.

In addition to a church, there are several thousand feet of trails, including a trail of the Stations of the Cross, along which visitors may pass in contemplation through botanical gardens. The Grotto also features a full-service Conference Center, and a Gift Shop. The Grotto was established in 1924 by Friar Ambrose Mayer, a native of Ontario, Canada, who was sent to the United States where he was a Servite pastor for the Archdiosese of Portland, Oregon Upon moving to Portland, Mayer found acreage located outside Northeast Portland that was at the time owned by the Union Pacific Railroad Company, and had been put up for sale to be developed into residential property. Mayer made a downpayment of $3,000 and purchased the property in 1923.A national campaign raised the balance of the funds needed to pay for the land.
Mayer envisioned The Grotto as a natural cathedral, and construction began in September 1923. A cave was carved out of the 110-foot basalt cliff, and a statue of Mary holding Jesus's crucified body was installed. Several years later, a marble recreation of Michaelangelo's Pietà was also installed. Three thousand people gathered for the first mass at the Grotto on May 29, 1924.
In 1955, the Chapel of Mary was dedicated on the grounds, and in 1983 the Grotto was designated as a National Sanctuary. The grounds of the Grotto include 62 acres of pathways, forest, and an upper-level botanical garden situated above the cliff, which are accessed through an elevator built against the cliff wall. The upper botanical gardens also provide expansive views of the Columbia River Valley, the Cascade Mountains, and Mount Saint Helens.

The Upper Level Gardens at The Grotto are 110 feet above The Grotto's Plaza. At the top of the north face of Rocky Butte, The Grotto has 62-acres of manicured gardens and walking paths. There are numerous chapels, statues, walking paths and reflective spaces on the upper level. The Upper Level Gardens are possibly the best kept secret in Portland as well as one of its largest green spaces. Dambana, Filipino Faith Shrine(Tagalog translation for altar) is like a pergola, only shaped like a traditional Filipino woman's head gear called salakot. In the center of this circular shrine there are three stands covered with bamboo. Three sculptures are enshrined on these stands: San Lorenzo Ruiz, the first Filipino saint; the Blessed Virgin Mary; and the Santo Nino of Cebu - intercessors with whom Filipinos share a marked affinity. The beautiful sculptures were created by artist Ferdie Sacdalan. The Filipino Community of Oregon and SW Washington, in partnership with The Grotto, collaborated to build this shrine, dedicated in 2008.
