The Merci Train Boxcar in Cheyenne
This is a video of the Merci Train boxcar in Cheyenne, located in the parking lot of the American Legion Post #6 on Lincolnway. After World War II, practically all of Europe was devastated, including France. A FRIENDSHIP train traveled through the United States, and people donated food to it to be sent to the French. A couple of years later, the French reciprocated with the MERCI, or Thank You train - they in turn sent boxcars of gifts for each of the 48 states.
This is the boxcar sent to Wyoming. Originally it was kept in the open air, but with a chain link fence around it. About 10 years ago the boxcar was repainted and a roof put over the top of it.
Sadly there is no placard on it to tell people its history.
C-SPAN Cities Tour - Ogden: Utah's WWII Merci Train
Hear the story of the Merci Trains that were gifted to 49 states from the French as a sign of gratitude after World War II. Utah's train was housed at the state's Capitol in Salt Lake City until a group from Ogden's American Legion requested to move the boxcar to the city's Union Station and make much needed repairs. Byron Lewis, Chairman of Ogden's Merci Boxcar organization, talks about the significance of the boxcar and explains why it's important to preserve its history.
NC Merci Car - WWII Era 40 & 8 Boxcar
The Merci Train was a gift to the people of the United States from the people of France, given in appreciation for the United States help to the French during World War II. The train consisted of 49 boxcars, each filled with hundreds of gifts from French citizens of every age and class. These gifts included embroidered linens, fine china, jewelry, toys, artwork, photographs, and personal items. Each of the 48 states would receive a boxcar, with Washington, DC and the territory of Hawaii sharing one boxcar. These special boxcars were called 40 & 8, signifying that they could hold 40 men or 8 horses. Each boxcar was decorated with a painted “Gratitude Train” ribbon and 40 coats-of-arms representing the provinces of France. Across the country, most Merci cars survive today and are displayed in museums, parks, and fairgrounds. North Carolina’s Merci car is on permanent exhibit at the N.C. Transportation Museum in Spencer, NC. Many of the original artifacts are housed in the North Carolina History Museum in Raleigh. The remainder of the artifacts are located in public institutions across the state.
The 70th Anniversary of the car is being celebrated in February and March of 2019 with 49 Days of Gratitude: A Celebration of Thanks.
Celebrations will include hosting events during the 49 Days of Gratitude centered around the theme of gratitude, WWII, or France. Embracing this idea, many community organizations have “jumped on the gratitude train.” The opening ceremony will be held at the N.C. Transportation Museum on February 8, 2019 featuring the Merci car, an exhibition of the original artifacts from the car, display of several vehicles from WWII era, and more. From February 26, 2019 through March 2, 2019, the traveling exhibit, Rise Above will visit the museum. Rise Above tells the story of the Tuskeegee Airmen of WWII, the famed all-black fighting squadron who broke down barriers with their courage and determination to serve our country during WWII. The museum’s annual Wine & Dine on the Rails Valentine’s event will feature French wine and food. Community events during the 49 Days of Gratitude will include art exhibitions with the theme of gratitude, Women in Service, Cabaret themed art gala, panel discussion of African American involvement in WWII, Merci – All Things French weekend event, and many more.

21 Days Under The Sky
21 DAYS UNDER THE SKY is an unconventional true story about those men who won't conform. Four guys meet in San Francisco to start a 3,800 mile ride down the Lincoln Highway – the oldest coast to coast route connecting the east to the west. They are riding vintage “choppers”; bikes prone to break down or run out of gas. Through the highs and lows of a long journey, this story examines the timeless American love affair with the motorcycle and an even greater American tradition: the road trip.
Canadian Pacific Train Traverses Flooded Railroad Tracks in Davenport, Iowa!
Canadian Pacific train traverses fully submerged tracks in Davenport, Iowa + two UP trains in Mechanicsville, Iowa on 10/13/18! On the Saturday of 10/13 I headed on down to Davenport, IA for part of the day to attend a family get together. However, only a few minutes after arriving at where we would be meeting up, I had gotten word that southbound Canadian Pacific manifest 474 would be going through an area on the Davenport riverfront where the tracks were fully under flood waters. Full well knowing I could make it track side with how slow trains were moving in the area (3 mph), I scooted on down to a spot just south of the SkyBridge near Riverfront Trail. After waiting for about 10 minutes or so, we see the headlight of 474 poke its way out from under Arsenal Bridge. Seeing this train go through the submerged tracks is something that's been on my bucket list for years.I gotta say, it was well worth the wait! After the train made it out of the water, they stopped for a required 10 minute dry off session of the traction motors. Seeing as I had to make it back to my family, I unfortunately couldn't stay for them to start moving again. If you're interested in seeing the rest of the train going through the water as well as the DPU, I'd suggest watching my friend Runnin' Eight's video: Anyway, here's your roster for 474: Canadian Pacific 8021 (Brand new rebuild) (GE AC44CWM) & 8933 (GE ES44AC). We decided to take Hwy 30 to get home, so we ended up stopping in Mechanicsville, IA to catch a couple of back to back eastbound UP trains. First was a manifest at the old Lincoln Hwy crossing just east of town. Second was a maritime stack train passing S Madison St in town. Here's the power on each train, and enjoy the video! First train: UP 8678 (EMD SD70ACe) & 5977 (GE AC44CWCTE). Second train: UP 8563 (EMD SD70ACe) & NS 9856 (GE C44-9W). Other railfans: Runnin' Eight, iliketrainskid3985, CNP204 & Tri State Rails. Notes: If you're interested in using the footage of the Canadian Pacific train going through the flood waters please contact me first. This is the kind of video I could see being reuploaded on some compilation channel without ever contacting the original owner to see if it's alright to use.
America’s First Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship
Since its heyday in the late 1800s, bare-knuckle boxing in the US has been relegated to parking lots and grimy basements, an underground sport that couldn’t find a way to bring itself above board. But in June of 2018—after spending years petitioning almost 30 states to sanction the brutal fights—promoter David Feldman finally managed to stage America's first-ever legal bare-knuckle boxing match in Wyoming.
VICE went to the Bare Knuckle Fighting Championships in Cheyenne a few days ahead of the big event to hear how Feldman managed to pull it off, and to meet a handful of fighters for whom boxing—and even MMA fighting—just isn’t hardcore enough.

Calling All Cars: Muerta en Buenaventura / The Greasy Trail / Turtle-Necked Murder
The radio show Calling All Cars hired LAPD radio dispacher Jesse Rosenquist to be the voice of the dispatcher. Rosenquist was already famous because home radios could tune into early police radio frequencies. As the first police radio dispatcher presented to the public ear, his was the voice that actors went to when called upon for a radio dispatcher role.
The iconic television series Dragnet, with LAPD Detective Joe Friday as the primary character, was the first major media representation of the department. Real LAPD operations inspired Jack Webb to create the series and close cooperation with department officers let him make it as realistic as possible, including authentic police equipment and sound recording on-site at the police station.
Due to Dragnet's popularity, LAPD Chief Parker became, after J. Edgar Hoover, the most well known and respected law enforcement official in the nation. In the 1960s, when the LAPD under Chief Thomas Reddin expanded its community relations division and began efforts to reach out to the African-American community, Dragnet followed suit with more emphasis on internal affairs and community policing than solving crimes, the show's previous mainstay.
Several prominent representations of the LAPD and its officers in television and film include Adam-12, Blue Streak, Blue Thunder, Boomtown, The Closer, Colors, Crash, Columbo, Dark Blue, Die Hard, End of Watch, Heat, Hollywood Homicide, Hunter, Internal Affairs, Jackie Brown, L.A. Confidential, Lakeview Terrace, Law & Order: Los Angeles, Life, Numb3rs, The Shield, Southland, Speed, Street Kings, SWAT, Training Day and the Lethal Weapon, Rush Hour and Terminator film series. The LAPD is also featured in the video games Midnight Club II, Midnight Club: Los Angeles, L.A. Noire and Call of Juarez: The Cartel.
The LAPD has also been the subject of numerous novels. Elizabeth Linington used the department as her backdrop in three different series written under three different names, perhaps the most popular being those novel featuring Det. Lt. Luis Mendoza, who was introduced in the Edgar-nominated Case Pending. Joseph Wambaugh, the son of a Pittsburgh policeman, spent fourteen years in the department, using his background to write novels with authentic fictional depictions of life in the LAPD. Wambaugh also created the Emmy-winning TV anthology series Police Story. Wambaugh was also a major influence on James Ellroy, who wrote several novels about the Department set during the 1940s and 1950s, the most famous of which are probably The Black Dahlia, fictionalizing the LAPD's most famous cold case, and L.A. Confidential, which was made into a film of the same name. Both the novel and the film chronicled mass-murder and corruption inside and outside the force during the Parker era. Critic Roger Ebert indicates that the film's characters (from the 1950s) represent the choices ahead for the LAPD: assisting Hollywood limelight, aggressive policing with relaxed ethics, and a straight arrow approach.
