Portland's Spirit of Innovation: Tilikum Crossing
Tilikum Crossing: Bridge of the People is the largest car-free bridge in the United States. As the latest addition to our cityscape here in Bridgetown, Tilikum Crossing will carry the Portland Streetcar, the MAX Orange Line, TriMet busses and cyclists and pedestrians.
As a first-of-its-kind bridge, Tilikum Crossing continues Portland's tradition of transportation innovation and excellence. In concrete and steel, it expresses the values that are central to our city and central to our work at the Portland Bureau of Transportation.

Portland's Tilikum Crossing: A Bridge for People, Not For Cars
In 2015, Portland, Oregon opened North Americas's longest car-free bridge The Tilikum Crossing, a bridge that allows travel for pedestrians, bikes and scooters as well as light rail, streetcars and buses!
It's a superb transportation marvel, not only elegant but one of the most multi-modal places in the United States connecting logical routes not only now but in the future as Portland's Southwest waterfront continues to go thru its development. It also connects to the equally exquisite aerial tram to Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) which in turn boasts the largest bicycle valet service in North America!
Being around the area on a few summer days it's easy to see all this beauty and planned car-free options in action.
Here's Streetfilms' love letter to Tilkum which makes the case for other cities considering transportation options near bodies of water that there are many great reasons to do it the same way. There is virtually no noise. The footprint of the bridge is small since interconnecting off-ramps and large roads taking up valuable real estate is not needed. The comfort for those using active transit (bikes and walking) was carefully considered. And the fact that it can accommodate three different modes of transit: streetcars, light rail and three bus routes is a huge selling point.
And the final wonderful feature: the LED lights on the span change colors based upon the temperature and water level of the Willamette River! Believe me on a beautiful summer night you want to stay on it forever.

Tilikum Crossing, Bridge of the People is a cable-stayed bridge across the Willamette River in Portland, Oregon, United States. TriMet, the Portland metropolitan area's regional transit authority, built the bridge for its MAX Orange Line light rail trains, as well as the Portland Streetcar, buses, bicycles, pedestrians, and emergency vehicles. Private cars and trucks will not be permitted on the bridge. The crossing opened for general use on September 12, 2015, becoming the first new bridge built across the river in the Portland metropolitan area since 1973. The first public access to the bridge was given on August 9, 2015, in the morning for the 20th annual Providence Bridge Pedal.
TriMet selected the name of the bridge in April 2014 from a list of four finalists chosen by the public. Tilikum is a Chinook Jargon word meaning people, tribe, or family, and the name is intended to honor the Multnomah, Cascade, Clackamas, and other Chinookan peoples who lived in the area as long as 14,000 years ago. The Tilikum name also references the pervasive use of Chinook Jargon in Portland’s first half century in the frequent trade interactions between pioneers and Native Americans.

This bridge should serve as a model to all future pedestrian Bridges across the country and frankly across the world! It is beautifully designed it is an amazingly spectacular and stunning piece of architectural art. I felt so proud to be an American and a resident of Portland Oregon as I rode my bike up and over this amazing Bridge. It makes you feel so good to be part of a community that encourages utilizing a bicycle or simply walking or maybe skateboarding instead of having to use a car which contribute so much pollution to the environment. In addition to all of the great environmental aspects that this bridge brings to the table, it is also just beautiful to look at the views of the river and the various downtown sections of Portland Oregon while crossing the bridge. Well I was crossing the bridge, I was even lucky enough to bump into a couple of school teachers on bicycles with their entire class and all of the kids had their own bicycles! It was a beautiful scene to watch the teachers speaking to the kids about how this state-of-the-art bridge is helping the environment and helping the people of Oregon to enjoy a clean crisp air without further pollution.

Tilikum Crossing is the first Willamette River bridge to be constructed in the 21st century and is the only multimodal bridge in the United States (public transit, emergency vehicles, pedestrians and bicycles only). The bridge mainly serves TriMet's MAX Orange Line (Portland Milwaukie Light Rail) and Portland Streetcar's Loop Line.
The music is coming from the Zidell Yard across the river near the OHSU Schnitzer Campus where the big celebration was being held.
