USS Constellation at Baltimore Inner Harbor GoPro
Tour of the USS Constellation, a US Sloop of War built in 1853. It was the last sail only warship designed and built by the US Navy. It was crewed by 265 officers, sailors and marines. It was armed with 25 guns or cannons . During the slave trade it intercepted slave ships and freed their captives. During the Civil war it served the union by enforcing the blockade and discouraging raiders. Today the USS constellation is a floating museum in the Baltimore inner harbor.

USS Constellation - Baltimore, MD
Taken from when we were in Baltimore last year. Got a chance to capture some footage of the USS Constellation which was built in 1854.
Needless to say, we kept a respectful distance from the ship itself. No imagery is worth putting a piece of history such as this at risk.
As the USS Constellation is considered a National Park, we also followed all of the rules and regulations for not taking off or landing in areas considered a part of the National Park itself.
What a beauty to be able to see.

Baltimore is a major city in Maryland with a long history as an important seaport. Fort McHenry, birthplace of the U.S. national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner,” sits at the mouth of Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. Today, this harbor area offers shops, upscale crab shacks and attractions like the Civil War–era warship the USS Constellation and the National Aquarium, showcasing thousands of marine creatures.
Baltimore is a popular tourist destination in Maryland, in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States of America, near Washington, D.C. It is perhaps most famously known historically as the city where Francis Scott Key wrote the lyrics for the Star Spangled Banner during the Battle of Baltimore of the War of 1812. Today it has become a major center for tourism and travel. Local highlights include excellent seafood (steamed blue crabs, raw oysters, Maryland crab cakes, and Maryland crab soup) and Camden Yards (the first retro major league ball park and where the Baltimore Orioles play). Baltimore possesses a vibrant arts scene with the largest free arts festival in the US (Artscape) occurring annually in July, a renowned arts museum American Visionary Arts Museum that is dedicated to outsider art, and the Maryland Institute College of Art and the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins. It is also home to Johns Hopkins University, Morgan State University, University of Baltimore, Loyola University, Goucher College, and the Notre Dame of Maryland University.
Baltimore has an absolutely staggering number of officially designated neighborhoods, Inner Harbor, If you are a tourist, you come here. Fells Point could not be more complementary to the Inner Harbor—historic. An incongruous mix of Baltimore's central business district, the University of Maryland-Baltimore, the awe inspiring Lexington Market, the infamously seedy Block, and the Bromo Arts District.
One of the nicest sections of the city, home to the performing arts district, Penn Station, and a host of other attractions (Walters Art Museum, the original Washington Monument, dining and wining on Charles St, the University of Baltimore, Station North Arts District etc.) that most visitors foolishly pass over. South Baltimore
Industrial blue-collar South Baltimore is dying, and is quickly being replaced with upscale gentrified neighborhoods like Federal Hill.
Most visitors to the area know only Johns Hopkins University and the always interesting commercial strip along Charles St nearby. But it is unfortunate that they overlook the quirkiest of quirky neighborhoods, Hampden. Infamous West Baltimore. If you have watched the Wire, this was where the crime was taking place! But don't be fooled. There are some major tourist draws here, like the Maryland Zoo in Druid Hill Park, Pimlico Racecourse, and Edgar Allen Poe's House.Baltimore's great rivalry between east and west is certainly an example of the narcissism of small differences. Attractions in the east are very few and far between, but things are changing fast as booming Johns Hopkins Medical Campus expands and demolishes in its wake.

USS Constellation (CV-64)
USS Constellation, a Kitty Hawk–class supercarrier, was the third ship of the United States Navy to be named in honor of the new constellation of stars on the flag of the United States and the only naval vessel ever authorized to display red, white, and blue designation numbers. One of the fastest ships in the Navy, as proven by her victory during a battlegroup race held in 1985, she was nicknamed Connie by her crew and officially as America's Flagship.
The contract to build Constellation was awarded to the New York Naval Shipyard, Brooklyn, New York, on 1 July 1956, and her keel was laid down 14 September 1957 at the New York Navy Yard. She was launched 8 October 1960, sponsored by Mary Herter. Constellation was delivered to the Navy 1 October 1961, and commissioned 27 October 1961, with Captain T. J. Walker in command. At that time, she had cost about US$264.5 million. Constellation was the last U.S. aircraft carrier to be built at a yard other than Newport News Shipbuilding & Drydock Company. As of early 2015, Constellation was at the scrapyard in Brownsville, Texas, awaiting her fate.

Baltimore: By the Dawn's Early Light, poster inspiration aboard the U.S.S. Constellation
The new illustration by Joe Barsin, Baltimore: By the Dawn's Early Light, commemorates the Bicentennial 1812-1815 in Maryland for the War of 1812. This video conveys Joe's inspiration through images of Baltimore and his overnight stay on the U.S.S. Sloop-of-War Constellation with his two boys and their Cub Scout Pack 382 of Arnold, Maryland.
The main ship in Joe Barsin's poster is the U.S.S. Frigate Constellation which fought in the War of 1812. It was built in Baltimore in 1797 and some of her timbers survive today inside the U.S.S. Sloop-of-War Constellation which served during the Civil War. There is some confusion with whether the ship docked at Baltimore's Inner Harbor saw service during the War of 1812 but this maybe due to the U.S.S. Constitution (a.k.a. Old Ironsides) which is docked in Boston Harbor. The original Constellation was built in the same year as Old Ironsides (1797) and were the same design.

History of the USS Constellation
USS Constellation
Four different USS Constellations have served the United States Navy. The first was named by President George Washington and was one of the original six heavy frigates that were commissioned under the Naval Act of 1794. She was built in the naval shipyard on Harris Creek in Baltimore's Fell's Point and was launched in 1797. The ship was rated for 38 guns but often carried 48 guns.
The Constellation was first used to protect US merchant ships in the Quasi-War with France. She defeated the French ship L'Insurgente in 1799. L'Insurgente used 12 lb cannon balls while the Constellation used 24 lb balls. After a few volleys, the French captain realized he was overmatch and soon surrendered. The victory for the Constellation was the first of any ship designed and built in America.
Portrait of the Constellation vs L'Insurgente
The second battel was against the French ship LaVengeance. After many maneuvers that ended in US marines boarding the La Vengeance and killing most of the French crew. The victory gave the nickname of the Constellation as the Yankee Racehorse.
The First Barbary War began when Yusuf Karmanli of Tripoli began harassing American merchant ships. He was not happy with his tribute of payment by the US when he learned that Algiers received more and he demanded $250,000 more. President Thomas Jefferson sent the Constellation and other ships to blockade Tripoli and protect US ships.
During the War of 1812, the Constellation was itself blockaded by British ships in Hampton Roads, Virginia. During the Second Barbary War, when President James Madison declared war on Algiers for intercepting American ships, the Constellation was sent back to the Mediterranean. She helped capture the Algerian frigate Mashuda and then the war soon ended.
In 1853, the Constellation was disassembled and a new USS Constellation was launched in 1854. The original Constellation was memorialized with a commemorative copper coin. For more information about the coin go to the National Bibliomania Society.
The ship was also memorialized as a stamp.
The original USS Constellation fame has inspired many modelers to replicate the ship. Over many decades, model manufacturers have developed wooden and plastic kits. Micro-Mark has sold the USS Constellation for some time. The company also sells all the necessary supplies and tools for modeling. Go to Micromark.com
