The LightRail in Portland, Oregon, USA
MAX Light Rail (for Metropolitan Area Express) is a light rail system in Portland, Oregon, United States that is owned and operated by TriMet. Consisting of five lines over a 60-mile (96.6 km) network, it serves 97 stations, connecting the North, Northeast, and Southeast sections of Portland; the suburban communities of Beaverton, Clackamas, Gresham, Hillsboro, and Milwaukie; and Portland International Airport to Portland City Center. With an average daily ridership of 123,200 and over 39 million annual riders in 2017, the MAX is the fourth-busiest light rail system in the United States after comparable light rail services in Los Angeles, Boston, and San Francisco. Lines run on all days of the week with off-peak headways of 15 minutes and up to five minutes during rush hour.
Among the first second-generation American light rail systems to be built, the MAX was conceived as a result of freeway revolts that took place in Portland in the early 1970s. Construction of the Blue Line's inaugural eastside segment, then known as the Banfield light rail project, began in 1982 and finished for the line to commence service on September 5, 1986. The system has since expanded through subsequent extension projects that have built upon the original line, with the Orange Line, opened in 2015, as its latest extension. Future expansion plans include extending the Red Line further west to Hillsboro in 2023 using existing rail infrastructure and, if funding is approved by voters in 2020, a proposed Green Line extension to Southwest Portland, Tigard, and Tualatin is slated for completion in 2027.
The MAX is one of three urban rail transit services operating in the Portland metropolitan area, with the other two being the Portland Streetcar and WES Commuter Rail. It provides direct connections to other modes of public transportation including local and regional buses at most stations and Amtrak via Union Station. ~Wikipedia

Belltown is the most densely populated neighborhood in Seattle, Washington, United States, located on the city's downtown waterfront on land that was artificially flattened as part of a regrading project. Formerly a low-rent, semi-industrial arts district, in recent decades it has transformed into a neighborhood of trendy restaurants, boutiques, nightclubs, and residential towers as well as warehouses and art galleries. The area is named after William Nathaniel Bell, on whose land claim the neighborhood was built.
In 2007, CNNMoney named Belltown the best place to retire in the Seattle metro area, calling it a walkable neighborhood with everything you need.
Belltown is home to the Art Institute of Seattle, Antioch University, Argosy University, the Seattle School of Theology & Psychology and RealNetworks Headquarters. It lies directly west of the Denny Triangle neighborhood, where online retailer Amazon is constructing three office towers to house its downtown headquarters, and where the Cornish College of the Arts is located.

The Lake Washington Ship Canal, which runs through the city of Seattle, Washington, connects the fresh water body of Lake Washington with the salt water inland sea of Puget Sound. The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks accommodate the approximately 20-foot difference in water level between Lake Washington and the Sound. The Canal runs east/west, and connects Union Bay, Lake Union, the Montlake Cut, Portage Bay, the Fremont Cut, Salmon Bay, and Shilshole Bay, with the Sound, which empties into the Pacific Ocean.

Everett is the county seat of and the largest city in Snohomish County, Washington, United States. Named for Everett Colby, son of founder Charles L. Colby, it lies 25 miles (40 km) north of Seattle. The city had a total population of 103,019 at the 2010 census, making it the 7th largest in the state and fifth-largest in the Puget Sound area. It received an All-America City Award in 2002.
Everett is home to the largest public marina on the west coast of the United States and is the western terminus of the western segment of U.S. Route 2. It is also home to Boeing's assembly plant for the 747, 767, 777 and the new 787. Boeing's Everett facility is known for being the largest building in the world by volume at 116.5 million cubic feet (3,300,000 m3).
In 1984, Everett was selected as the site of a U.S. Navy Homeport, Naval Station Everett. The Naval Station formally opened in 1992 and on January 8, 1997 welcomed the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln. The Lincoln is no longer homeported in Everett as of Winter, 2011. The aircraft carrier, USS Nimitz (CVN-68) has replaced the Lincoln as Everett's homeported ship, as of March 9, 2012. Everett is also home to the Port of Everett, an international shipping port, that brings trade, commerce, jobs and recreational opportunities to the city.
In 2003, Xfinity Arena (then known as Everett Events Center), effectively opened Everett to tourism. The $83 million arena continues to host events, once exclusive to Seattle's KeyArena, to present day.

Kelso is a city in southwest Washington State, United States, and is the county seat of Cowlitz County.[5] At the 2010 census, the population was 11,925. Kelso is part of the Longview, Washington Metropolitan Statistical Area, which has a population of 102,410. Kelso shares its long western border with Longview. It is near Mount St. Helens.
On May 18, 1980, being only 24 miles (39 km) away, Kelso residents experienced the shock wave caused by the eruption of Mt. St. Helens. Called the largest volcanic eruption in historic times in the contiguous United States, Kelso received large amounts of volcanic ash through the air and from the massive mudflow caused by the eruption transported by the Toutle and Cowlitz Rivers. Many areas of the city, including the Three Rivers Golf Course are built on volcanic ash dredged from the Cowlitz River by inmates in state custody and volunteers.
Olympia is the capital of the State of Washington and the county seat of Thurston County. It was incorporated on January 28, 1859. The population was documented as 46,478 in the 2010 census. The city borders Lacey, to the east, and Tumwater to the south. Olympia is a major cultural center of the Puget Sound region. Olympia is located 60 miles (100 km) from Seattle, the largest city in the state of Washington.

Amtrak Coast Starlight, in a Sleeper Car Bedroom
The overnight 14 Coast Starlight (Amtrak) from Los Angeles to Seattle.

--29 stops (a few afford a chance for some fresh air, for a few minutes)
--incalculable jaw drops at the beauty seen from along the ocean coastline to the snowy mountain ranges and backdoor views of towns and cities.
I can't recommend this enough! What an experience! What a way to see the country! The whole ride was smooth, quiet, and tranquil. Whether you enjoy a book in the glass-domed car while sipping on some coffee, or nurse a beer through the passing majesty outside your window, you are rocked gently into a relaxation that is unlike any other. The staff was ever ready to accommodate needs and/or wants. Guest speakers rode along, regaling passengers with tales of the flora, fauna, and history of the areas. Fellow passengers were in equal states of awe and wonder, evidenced by the acknowledging head tilts complete with twinkling eyes and hearty grins. Childhood fancy was stirred together with an aged appreciation and I found that though we were moving northward, time had stood still.
Note: Yes...I have since learned to refrain from filming in portrait mode, when using a phone. ????
Note: Thank you, all, who have clarified that it's a Lounge Car featured in this video, not an actual Parlour Car. I did not intend to mislead anyone; during our ride, the staff and fellow passengers were calling it the Parlour Car, and I was at fault for following the flock in my understanding. Our train's Parlour Car must have been undergoing maintenance, at the time. I did find, however, the Lounge Car to be quite enjoyable. Nevertheless, I imagine riding with an official Parlour Car would enhance the experience, greatly. Thank you all, for clarifying this, for me and for others.

Downtown Character - Portland, Oregon
With almost 600,000 people, Portland, Oregon is a fairly big city, but its downtown feels smaller and is quite walkable. And walking around Portland is the best way to see it. There are a lot of small touches that give downtown Portland a lot of character, from pocket parks to plentiful street art to a handful of quirks, a sampling of which are shown here.

Welcome to the deepest transit station in North America.
The wonderfully unique platforms of TriMet's Washington Park station are 79 meters (260 feet) below the surface, making it one of the deepest stations in the world. It is also the only fully underground station in Portland's extensive light-rail system.
The station is so far below ground level that its high-speed elevators have to travel the equivalent of a 28-story building, which takes approximately 25 seconds. The station has no public stairs or escalators, which is probably for the better.
The station is built in the center of the Robertson tunnel, which connects central Portland with its western suburbs. The station is serviced by the Red and Blue Lines, which travel between Beaverton Transit Center and Portland Airport and Hillsboro and Gresham, respectively.
Trains can be heard from the platforms from over a mile away as they enter the tunnel (and in our humble opinion, Washington Park boasts the greatest train tunnel sounds we've ever heard; listen at 2:15 if you don't believe us).
The station opened in 1998, and might as well be the jewel in the crown of TriMet's light rail system. A geological timeline, visible at various parts of the video, is found along the platform walls. The walls closest to the tracks are exquisitely painted murals of various landscapes and wildlife. The yellow roof girders on the eastbound platform symbolize the sunrise, and the orange girders on the westbound platform are representative of the sunset (the platforms are nicknamed Sunrise and Sunset by TriMet.
The station boasts these elements because it is located next to some of Portland's top attractions: The Oregon Zoo, World Forestry Center, Portland Children's Museum, Oregon Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and Hoyt Arboretum are all adjacent to the station in all different directions.
The station is largely made of rock, which when combined with the wind that the trains carry through the platforms, keeps the station at a year-round temperature of 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
The digits of Pi are also carved into the wall of the eastbound platform, but only the first 11 numbers are correct. That's really the only thing about this station that isn't perfect.
