The Wahclella Falls Trailhead in the Columbia River Gorge is a 2.4-mile round-trip trek that takes hikers to the 127-foot, two-tier Wahclella waterfall. Several footbridges cross over Tanner Creek, with one passing right beside Munra Falls. The trail recently reopened, following damage from the Eagle Creek Fire.

The Columbia River Highway splits around exit # 40 that leads to the Bonneville Dam. The parking and access area for Wahclella Falls is slightly down the hill and to the right (for eastbound traffic) of the entrance to the dam.[clarification needed]
Wahclella is at the midpoint of the well maintained trail number 436 loop that forms a 1.8-mile (2.9 km) roundtrip[1]. The United States Forest Service charges a nominal $5US fee for using the trail, although owners of a Northwest Forest Pass or similar recreation pass are exempted from this. The falls are divided into upper and lower segments with a combined height of 350 ft (107 m), the upper section is not completely visible while the fully visible lower segment stands 60 feet (18 m) in height as it thunders out of a narrow gorge carved through dark grey basalt.[1]
The plunge pool has a picturesque quality due to the surrounding natural walls that form a semi-circular rotunda extending from the falls to the main vantage point. As with most waterfalls, Wahclella does exhibit some seasonality of water flow; however, because Tanner Creek is sourced primarily by an underground spring, the flow is never dramatically affected by adverse weather.
Wahclella Falls was named after a nearby village of Native Americans by the Mazama mountaineering club in 1915. Although Wahclella Falls is its officially recognized name, the United States Geological Survey still records the waterfall as Tanner Creek Falls.

Wahclella Falls (Columbia River Gorge, Oregon)
July 7, 2013 - We decided to go on a short hike where the trail head is just a mere 40 minutes drive from downtown Portland. The trial itself is a 1.8-mile (2.9 km) roundtrip and very easy to access. We were rewarded with this beautiful scenery.

We hiked Munra Point on March 1st, 2015. The hike is 5.8 miles roundtrip and gains just under 1,900 ft. of elevation gain. We started from the Wahclella Falls Trailhead, which is located off Exit #40 from I-84 East in the Columbia River Gorge. There's another route that starts from the Yeon Trailhead.

Wahclella Falls
Wahclella Falls receives far fewer visitors than the average Columbia River Gorge waterfall, perhaps due to lack of stature and visibility, as well as length of hike. The second and most visible 60-foot drop of the falls occupies a peaceful grotto at the end of a deep canyon. Although it is often overlooked by hikers feeling the need for more exercise, Wahclella rates as high as any hike in the area in terms of beauty, if not distance.
