???? SEX SLAVES of the Japanese army Rare pictures of the comfort women world war II pacific history
Comfort women were women and girls forced into sexual slavery by the Imperial Japanese Army in occupied territories before and during World War II.[1][2][3] Controversy over and protest against the term remain, especially from surviving women and the nations from which they were taken, about the continued reference to the women as comfort women instead of sex slaves.[4]
The name comfort women is a translation of the Japanese ianfu (慰安婦),[5] a euphemism for prostitute(s).[6] Estimates vary as to how many women were involved, with numbers ranging from as low as 20,000 (by Japanese historian Ikuhiko Hata[7]) to as high as 360,000 to 410,000 (by a Chinese scholar[8]); the exact numbers are still being researched and debated.[9] Most of the women were from occupied countries, including Korea, China, and the Philippines.[10] Women were used for military comfort stations from Burma, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaya, Manchukuo, Taiwan (then a Japanese dependency), the Dutch East Indies, Portuguese Timor, New Guinea[11][12][13] and other Japanese-occupied territories. Stations were located in Japan, China, the Philippines, Indonesia, then Malaya, Thailand, Burma, New Guinea, Hong Kong, Macau, and French Indochina.[14] A smaller number of women of European origin were also involved from the Netherlands[15] and Australia with an estimated 200–400 Dutch women alone.[16]
According to testimonies, young women were abducted from their homes in countries under Imperial Japanese rule. In many cases, women were lured with promises of work in factories or restaurants, or opportunities for higher education; once recruited, they were incarcerated in comfort stations both inside their nations and abroad.[17]
Military correspondence of the Imperial Japanese Army shows that the aim of facilitating comfort stations was the prevention of rape crimes committed by Japanese army personnel and thus preventing the rise of hostility among people in occupied areas.[18] Carmen Argibay, a former member of the Argentine Supreme Court of Justice, also states that the Japanese government aimed to prevent atrocities like the Rape of Nanking by confining rape and sexual abuse within military controlled facilities, or stop the incident from leaking to the international press should such events occur.[19] She also states that the government wanted to minimize medical expenses on treating venereal diseases that the soldiers acquired from frequent and widespread rape, which hindered Japan's military capacity.[20] Furthermore, Yuki Tanaka also suggests that local brothels outside of the military's reach had issues of security since there were possibilities of spies disguised as workers of such private facilities.[21]
Since prostitution in Japan was well-organized, the Japanese government and military developed a similar program to serve the Japanese Armed Forces.[22] The Japanese Army established the comfort stations to prevent venereal diseases and rape by Japanese soldiers, to provide comfort to soldiers and head off espionage. According to Japanese historian Yoshiaki Yoshimi, however, the comfort stations did not solve, but aggravated the first two problems. Yoshimi has asserted, The Japanese Imperial Army feared most that the simmering discontentment of the soldiers could explode into a riot and revolt. That is why it provided women.[23]
Approximately three quarters of comfort women died, and most survivors were left infertile due to sexual trauma or sexually transmitted diseases.[71] Beatings and physical torture were said to be common.[72] The women who were not prostitutes prior to joining the comfort women corps, especially those taken in by force, were normally broken in by being raped.[73]
One Korean woman, Kim Hak-sun stated in a 1991 interview about how she was drafted into the comfort women corps in 1941: When I was 17 years old, the Japanese soldiers came along in a truck, beat us [her and a friend], and then dragged us into the back. I was told if I were drafted, I could earn lots of money in a textile factory...The first day I was raped and the rapes never stopped...I was born a woman but never lived as a woman...I feel sick when I come close to a man. Not just Japanese men, but all men-even my own husband who saved me from the brothel. I shiver whenever I see a Japanese flag...Why should I feel ashamed? I don't have to feel ashamed
The last surviving victims have become public figures in Korea, where they are referred to as halmoni, the affectionate term for grandmother. There is a nursing home, called House of Sharing, for former comfort women in South Korea. For other nations, the research and the interaction with victims is less advanced.

White - Rosemary Butcher - 2003
This was the work that was to start the extraordinary working relationship between Butcher and dancer Elena Giannotti. The concept with filmmaker Martin Otter was based around the journey of the British explorer Shackleton. Three dancers Giannotti, Anise Smith and Anna Holter moved in counterpoint to a five-meter projection screen with the dancers on live and pre-recorded images. The score by Cathy Lane hauntingly evoked the horror of Shackleton's journey.

This Orange Chicken Recipe brings Chinese takeout home! It's easy to make and oh so delicious to enjoy this takeout fakeout favorite in the comfort of your own kitchen.
Is Orange Chicken Chinese?
No! Orange Chicken is not a traditional dish found in China. It is a popular dish served at Chinese restaurants in North America, but it is most definitely not an authentic or traditional dish.
What cut of chicken should I use to make orange chicken?
You can use either boneless skinless chicken breasts or boneless skinless chicken thighs depending on whether you want white meat or dark meat. Chicken thighs will have a bit more gristle than breasts, but will be more moist.
INGREDIENTS
CHICKEN:
4 boneless skinless chicken breasts
4 egg whites
2 tablespoons cornstarch
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon white pepper
SAUCE:
1 cup orange juice
1 orange, zested
¼ cup rice vinegar
2 tablespoons soy sauce
⅓ cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground ginger
½ teaspoon red pepper flakes
1/4 cup water
1 tablespoon cornstarch
Vegetable oil, for frying
1/4 cup sliced green onions (optional)
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Cut chicken breasts into bite sized pieces. In a medium-sized mixing bowl, whisk together egg whites and cornstarch. Submerge chicken breast pieces in mixture and set aside.
2. In a small saucepan, stir together orange juice, orange zest, rice vinegar, soy sauce, brown sugar, ginger, and red pepper flakes. Bring to a simmer.
3. In a small bowl, whisk together water and cornstarch. Pour slurry into sauce mixture and stir in until thickened. Remove from heat and set aside.
4. Meanwhile, pour 2 inches of vegetable oil into a large, heavy bottom pot. Heat to 350 degrees. Working in small batches, fry chicken pieces until cooked through and golden brown, about 3 to 4 minutes. Remove from oil and drain on a paper towel lined plate.
5. Toss fried chicken pieces together with sauce. Serve immediately and garnish with green onions for color.

Why the Soviets doctored this iconic photo
This photo conceals a clue to a brutal story of vengeance.
Correction: Many of you pointed out that we erroneously used “Russia” and “Russian” interchangeably with “Soviet Union” and “Soviet” in this video. The Soviet Union was a multiethnic federation, and indeed many non-Russians bore the brunt of Hitler’s initial invasion in 1941. We regret the error — especially in reference to the Soviet soldier raising the flag in the photo, Alexei Kovalev, who is Ukrainian.
Additionally, we inaccurately stated that Rosenthal’s photo was taken following the Battle of Iwo Jima. While the capture of Mt. Suribachi was a significant point in the battle, it was not the end, and in fact three of the six Marines pictured were later killed in action on Iwo Jima.

“Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima” and “Raising a Flag over the Reichstag” are similarly iconic photos from World War II. They’re both beloved images of victory, and they’re both taken after the fighting ended in significant battles. But the Russian one is different, because parts of it are altered.
Specifically, a watch being worn by one of the soldiers is edited out, to cover up the possibility that he had been looting. The Soviet invasion of Germany saw brutal acts of civilian murder, rape, and looting as a vengeful act following Operation Barbarossa, Hitler’s 1941 invasion of Russia that left millions dead, including women and children.
