ARCHES NATIONAL PARK ( Delicate Arch Hike ).... Moab , Utah 6/25/2013 part 2
We hike the Delicate Arch in Moab, Utah . It was hot summer day with the temperature reaching over a 100 deg. we were all sweating when we reach the Arch , water is a must that u carry for there are no any place u can find water along the way. Delicate Arch hike is one of the most beautiful hike in the park and the Delicate Arch is the most recognized landmark of all the arches ...
Route Descriptions: The trailhead is at Wolfe Ranch, accessible via a paved spur from the main park loop road. Signs make it easy to find. The parking lot is usually full during tourist season and so you may have to park along the access road.
At Wolfe Ranch there is a panel of Native American rock art, attributed to the Utes, which is worth gazing at for a few minutes. A signed spur trail leads to it.
The trail slopes gradually upward as you hike toward the arch. The total elevation gain is only 480 feet, but it seems steeper than that as you climb up the slickrock ridge. There is no shade on that section and so the most pleasant hiking is during morning and evening hours. Midday hikes can be very hot during summer. You will want to wear a hat, use sunscreen and carry water regardless of the season.
Steps have been carved into the sandstone to make it easy to get up some steep places. In one spot the trail follows a shelf on the side a solid-rock mountain, a sheer cliff falling off one side. The trail is wide and smooth, and walking is easy, but some people get nervous because of the cliff. Just hang onto your kids and stay away from the edge.
American Southwest (#18): Arches National Park, Utah
Arches National Park ... water and ice, extreme temperatures, and underground salt movement are responsible for the sculptured rock scenery of Arches National Park. On clear days with blue skies, it is hard to imagine such violent forces, or the 100 million years of erosion, that created this land that boasts the greatest density of natural arches in the world. More than 2,000 cataloged arches range in size from a three-foot opening, the minimum considered an arch, to the longest one, Landscape Arch, which measures 306 feet from base to base.
Today, new arches are being formed and old ones are being destroyed. Erosion and weathering are relatively slow but are relentlessly creating dynamic landforms that gradually change through time. Occasionally change occurs more dramatically. In 1991 a slab of rock about 60 feet long, 11 feet wide, and four feet thick fell from the underside of Landscape Arch, leaving behind an even thinner ribbon of rock. Delicate Arch, an isolated remnant of a bygone fin, stands on the brink of a canyon, with the dramatic La Sal Mountains for a backdrop. Towering spires, pinnacles, and balanced rocks perched atop seemingly inadequate bases vie with the arches as scenic spectacles.
American Indians used the area for thousands of years. Archaic people, and later ancestral Puebloan, Fremont, and Utes searched the arid desert for game animals, wild plant foods, and stone for tools and weapons. They also left evidence of their passing on a few pictograph and petroglyph panels. The first white explorers came looking for wealth in the form of minerals.
Ranchers found wealth in the grasses for their cattle and sheep. John Wesley Wolfe, a disabled Civil War veteran, and his son, Fred, settled here in the late 1400s. A weathered log cabin, root cellar, and a corral remain as evidence of the primitive ranch they operated for more than 20 years.

We saw so many beautiful things and places, including Cadillac Ranch, Meow Wolf (video of that coming soon), Mesa Verde NP, Arches NP, Zion NP, and Yosemite NP! We had such a fun time, and are so grateful to still be able to visit all of these places. We hope they'll still be available for generations to come and see!
