We start the day with a beautiful drive up to Mangonui to try what might be the best fish & chips in New Zealand! We had no idea that shark & chips (a.k.a. Lemonfish) was so popular (and delicious) here. Then we head to the Matapouri Mermaid Pools to swim in these beautiful tide pools!

Today we are checking out some indoor gardens in Whangarei called Botanica. Whangarei Botanica is a fernery, where they grow native ferns and plants and one of the best native gardens in New Zealand. If you’re looking to see a New Zealand garden, Botanica in Whangarei is the place. Botanica also has a conservatory with ever-changing exotic displays. Plus, Botanica is one of the good things to do in Whangarei on a rainy day. It makes a good rainy day activity in Whangarei.

Giant Sand Dunes (Te Paki) and Cape Reinga - Northland New Zealand (2018/2019)

During December 2018 - January 2019 I went on a road trip to the North Island of New Zealand. It was my 3rd trip to the country so I only traveled to places where I hadn't been before. Northland region is one of those areas. My hotel was in Pahia/Bay of Islands. From there it took all day just to drive up to the northern most point of the North Island, which is Cape Reinga, our destination of that day. Actually, Cape Reinga isn’t the true north-end of the island, that is North Cape which is 3km further, but it is not easy to access by car so Cape Reinga light house was as far we could get. We had limited time to enjoy the attractions on the way, such as Mangonui for the drink and Te Paki Sand Dunes/Stream. I spent most of my time at the dunes. By the time we stopped at 90 miles beach the weather conditions were bad so we couldn't really enjoy it. We were lucky enough to see the sun light at all that day. Furthermore, we couldn't have driven on the beach with our rental car anyway. The sand may be packed, but if something would happen, like the car sinking in the sand, it would ruin our trip. Over all we enjoyed the beautiful landscape on the way. The Cape Reinga Light house is set on the most beautiful cape that I have seen on either of New Zealand's two islands.
