The Karikari Peninsula on the east coast of the far north of Northland is between Rangaunu Harbour to the west, and Doubtless Bay to the southeast. It is a right-angled land mass of two relatively distinct parts. The rocky northern part, which has an east-west orientation and is approximately 17 km long, was originally an island but is now connected to the mainland by a low sandy strip approximately 11 km long, which has a north-south orientation. The spiritually significant Puwheke sits high above the north-facing beaches.The local iwi are Ngāti Kahu. The Clearest Lake in the World - Blue Lake in New Zealand

Located in Nelson Lakes National Park, Blue Lake (also known as Rotomairewhenua) holds the title of the world’s clearest lake. Scientific tests carried ut in 2011 by New Zealand’s National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) showed Blue Lake to be the clearest natural body of fresh water known to man. According to the NIWA research results, visibility in the lake is up to 80 metres (262 ft) – meaning the water is considered almost as “optically clear” as distilled water.

Blue Lake is characterized by blue-violet hues seen only in the very clearest natural waters. The lake is spring fed from the neighboring glacial Lake Constance, but the water passes through landslide debris that forms a dam between the two lakes. The natural dam filters out nearly all the particles suspended in the water giving the lake the most intense natural blue-violet colour.
