Nature Attractions In Aetolia-Acarnania Region

Aetolia-Acarnania is one of the regional units of Greece. It is part of the geographic region of Central Greece and the administrative region of West Greece. A combination of the historical regions of Aetolia and Acarnania, it is the country's largest regional unit. Its capital is Missolonghi for historical reasons, with its biggest city and economic centre at Agrinio. The area is now connected with the Peloponnese peninsula via the Rio-Antirio Bridge. The surrounding regional units take in Arta in Epirus, a narrow length bordering Karditsa of Thessaly, Evrytania to the northeast, and Phocis to the east.

    Lysimachia is a lake in Aetolia-Acarnania, western Greece. Its area is 13.2 km², its depth is around 9 m. It is fed by the small river Ermitsa, and by a canal that connects the lake with the larger Lake Trichonida to its east. Its outflow is the river Dimikos, which drains into the river Acheloos. The city of Agrinio lies 6 km to the northeast.

    Amaliada is a town and a former municipality in northwestern Elis, West Greece, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Ilida, of which it is the seat and a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 251.945 km2. In 2011, the municipal unit had 28,520 inhabitants, of whom 16,763 lived in the town of Amaliada. It is near the archaeological site of Elis, the city-state whose territory was the site of the ancient Olympic Games. It is situated in the plains of Elis, 6 km from the Ionian Sea.     Monolithi is a big sandy beach, in west coast of Preveza Prefecture, Greece. Total length of the beach is 25 km. So, it is the longest sandy beach of European Union, The name Monolithi comes from Greek roots Μόνος + Λίθος = single + stone. It was an oversea rock 10X10m, near the coast, until year 1942, when German and Italian soldiers destroyed the rock with mortar fire. A photograph before 1942 is available. Today the rock exists as an undersea reef .

    Perama is a town and a former municipality in the Ioannina regional unit, Epirus, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Ioannina, of which it is a municipal unit. It lies about 4 km north of central Ioannina. The town's name means passage and it lies on the northern edge of lake Pamvotis . It is famous for its cave, known as the Cave of Perama . The cave, extending five kilometres below the ground and having been explored fully only up to one kilometre, has a remarkable arrangement of stalagmites and stalactites.
