Monaco is not formally a part of the European Union (EU), but it participates in certain EU policies, including customs and border controls. Through its relationship with France, Monaco uses the euro as its sole currency. Monaco joined the Council of Europe in 2004.

Monte Carlo è dotata di numerosi parcheggi sotterranei, che rendono agevole la sosta presso punti di affluenza quali lo stadio, la spiaggia, il casinò, il Metropole, noto centro commerciale e alberghiero.
Un intero quartiere, Fontvieille (Fontevecchia), è sorto negli ultimi decenni interamente strappando la terra dalle acque del mare.
Durante i primi anni del XXI secolo è stato portato a termine un importante ampliamento del porto, che consente anche alle grandi navi da crociera di attraccare ad una banchina semi-mobile, in parte ancorata in acqua e in parte fissata alla terraferma. È stata inoltre allargata la passeggiata lungo il porto, per aumentare la superficie a disposizione dei box di Formula 1 montati durante lo svolgimento del Gran Premio che si disputa nelle vie cittadine e che attira ogni anno decine di migliaia di appassionati.
Il Casinò è forse il luogo più noto dell'intero Principato, ed è visitato da migliaia di persone che tentano la fortuna e da personaggi che soggiornano nel vicino Hotel de Paris o presso l'Hermitage.
Il Grimaldi Forum, un centro di esposizioni in funzione da pochi anni, sorge in prossimità della spiaggia ed ospita numerose opere artistiche e concerti.
Famoso anche il Museo Oceanografico, che si trova nella parte vecchia di Monaco, vicino al palazzo dei Grimaldi, voluto dal principe Alberto I, ospita numerose specie di pesci e anche esposizioni e mostre.
Di rilievo, è appunto anche il Palazzo dei Principi di Monaco.
Notevole anche il giardino esotico, che ospita, tra l'altro, numerose specie di piante grasse. Al suo interno vi sono delle spettacolari grotte naturali, visitabili, ricche di stalattiti e stalagmiti. Una particolarità delle grotte è che il percorso, che inizia nel punto più alto del Principato, trova la sua massima profondità a diversi metri sotto il livello del mare.
Anche dal punto di vista medico, i monegaschi godono di ottimi servizi: oltre al moderno ospedale pubblico intitolato a Grace Kelly, vi trova posto un centro cardio-toracico privato di fama mondiale.
Un cenno particolare merita la sicurezza pubblica: nel principato sono in servizio ben 1500 agenti di polizia, gran parte dei quali pattuglia incessantemente (in auto o più spesso a piedi) le strade e i luoghi di maggior interesse turistico. È anche in funzione un vastissimo sistema di telecamere che mantiene in pratica sotto controllo l'intero abitato. L'eccezionale organizzazione dei servizi principali e, in generale, di tutto il contesto urbano, possono costituire motivo di grande interesse per il visitatore.
