Anahuac is a city in the U.S. state of Texas. The population of the city was 2,243 at the 2010 census. Anahuac is the seat of Chambers County and is situated in Southeast Texas. The Texas Legislature designated the city as the Alligator Capital of Texas in 1989. Anahuac hosts an annual alligator festival.

The approximately 54.36-acre facility, near Downtown Huntsville, is operated by the Correctional Institutions Division of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, administered as within Region I. The facility, the oldest Texas state prison, opened in 1849.The unit houses the State of Texas execution chamber. It is the most active execution chamber in the United States, with 555 executions since 1982, when the death penalty was reinstated in Texas .
